Remember when we would just stop people cold?

Especially the Suns? Those were good times. I got more excited watching a defensive stop, than anything else.

Do you think we have the pieces to return to Spurs defense, or is it a relic of the past?

I'll take losses, as long as we play tough gritty defense, and totally bitch slap the opposing team around. I dont like losing like we have been recently, going quietly into the night.

Yeah you're right... Im not panicking or anything. Just reminiscing... you know. I remember staying up late in my dorm watching the Spurs just destroy teams defensively, better times I guess. Your avatar is the brightest spot for bringing back Spurs Defense.

Duncan is still a great defender, but he's not the best defender in the NBA anymore..Bowen isn't here..those factors alone make a huge difference..when you have 2 of the top 5 defenders in the NBA on your team playing inside-outside defense every year, you're always going to be elite..before that, it's impossible NOT to be elite defensively with a Duncan-Robinson frontcourt..so we no longer have that luxury..

Orlando from last year is a good example..they had the #1 defense in the NBA last year, but they didn't necessarily have a number of good defenders..they did have the best defender in the entire NBA in Howard anchoring their D though, and it makes a huge difference..

Other factors include Tony Parker's heavy decline defensively the last few years..the defender next to Duncan isn't a good defender like Horry, or even a good body like Elson/Nazr..Pop has softened..

It's too early to panic, but it's gonna be difficult..

The season did just start, but look at the contenders, BOSTON, ORLANDO, LA.. how come theyre stopping people and winning? We need another trade and thats it.

I've got a severe problem with white jumpshooting stiff big men taking the Spurs bigmen off the dribble as if they are Chris Paul. (Brad Miller and now Okur)

When will the Matt Bonner / Tim Duncan combination end?

shit I'm almost starting to feel sorry for TD. I'd rather watch McDyess, Blair, and Ratliff try and get acclimated playing with Timmy then see the above duo struggle defensively.

If they can't stop anyone they are wasting their fucking time out there. I don't care how many points they try and put up.

Its early and the season and I realize that....but....

Jesus fuck the defense is bad. The Jazz have run screen galore tonight and the defense is horrible. Did these guys forget how to show off screens? They do it for a bit after timeouts but then they forget too. The positioning is horrible as well. The Jazz have simply picked apart this defense.

The silver lining is this will lead to what is hopefully a productive film session.

play ratliff. play mahinmi. what harm is it going to do? can't be any worse than how they're playing now.

HarlemHeat37
11-06-2009, 01:20 AM
Hairston should be the first guy to play IMO..he earned his spot in camp and preseason, he knows the system, he fills a glaring need, he's a smart and tough player..

Ratliff should be a given, but I guess Pop hates his offense..

Rob123

If you cut off my leg. I think I'd ply better D than bonner.

MannyIsGod
11-06-2009, 01:21 AM
Mahinmi? :LOL We want better defense, not worse.

I think they'll be fine, but for the most part you can tell a lot of the team is new to the system because they're simply bad as positioning so far. The Jazz did an excellent job with screens tonight and passing out of them.

The Jazz are the perfect team to expose our defensive weaknesses.

Normally they execute as well or better than any team not named Celtics or Lakers. They also have the players to beat up on our guys and get into our "it's always a foul" heads. And at this point Sloan knows we are not quick on our rotations so he will be pick and rolling and back cutting us to death.

Hell Even Kirilenko went one-on-one.

we just need to give up every one of our offensive possessions, and work defense during these next games. Repetition is key. The more shots we give the opponent the more practice we'll get.

I LOVED those days. Bruce Bowen was my favorite Spur to watch. It was great watching him match up on Dirk and give him a hard time the way he did.

There are better ways to work on defense than that. It can become the primary focus during practice

I can excuse new guys for not knowing the system, but a couple of starters we have have been here for a few seasons, their D have always sucked, and they still play the bulk of minutes. That's on the coach.
I miss Pop calling a timeout, yelling at somebody's face, then sitting him in the doghouse for the rest of the game. At least you could see he cared and took pride in keeping a high standard.
Nowadays he looks between puzzled and bored at times. He gets pissed occasionally, but there's are no consequences for screwing up.

jefferson has the tools to be a good defender but i don't think he has the toughness it requires. defenders like bowen, artest, and battier made it their purpose in life to shut down the opposing team's best player. don't know if jefferson possesses the same passion. it's actually kind of surprising how bowen made the spurs' defense look so good. too bad he's too old now.

I sense the starting of Dice soon. Not knocking Bonner, but it may help DIce shake the rust a little faster. Also, I think it may be time to attempt acclimation of Mahimi. Since these games don't seem to count as much now is a good time

im not going with the trend here by any means listen pop is not allowed to fuck up esp. this year with what holt did! im very confident that if our players are proven consistently to screw up (bonner, finley) they wont be starting very long but you have to make a rational decision remember every move is so important. now if they dont improve going to the bench and start playing good basketball then i say you could possibly see a trade! but as for now look for the starting line up to change manana and if it doesnt dont freak out pop will figure it out. i really do hope hes working with haislip and hairston because if hes not thats a problem, other than that just chill to the next episode

The Spurs gave up 60 points in the first half!

Boston is probably an older team than the Spurs. Yet, even at this early stage of the season, their chemistry, commitment, and defensive intensity are leaps and bounds ahead of the Spurs. Same as last year.
