after seeing the Disney Worlds thread, I wanted to start this.

Here are some pictures of the two tallest coasters in the world and fastest.

The first pictures are of Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point in Ohio. The park has a total of 16 coasters. This coaster is 420 tall and goes 120 mph.

NOTE- I DIDN'T TAKE THESE PICTURES NOR DO I TAKE CREDIT FOR THEM. I GOT THEM OFF OF SOME WEBSITES

Currently Six Flags Great Adventures is building a coaster that is 456 feet tall and goes 128 mph called Kingda Ka. It is done, and is in the testing stage.

But your telling me, that those 19 year old morons that work at Fiesta Texas and whereever else, are out there checking the torque rate on the bolts on those coasters??

Hell, they probobly dont even walk the track hardly.

So what is it that these "19" year olds have done wrong? All you have said is that how they don't check everything and all that. If they didn't check everything, show us some proof of what you are talking about. I haven't heard of anything that went wrong because people forgot to check the bolts and all the stuff you are saying about them. I don't think Six Flags hires 19 year olds to check out the tracks and all that.

He is saying that they don't get people 19 to check the tracks. Like go up and down them and look for loose things. They have a lot of older people who do that. Checking the track to see if everything is alright is different from some one running the coaster. That is called an operator who controls everything that goes on during the ride.

Daily Inspections

Long before you even wake up in the morning, the park maintenance teams are showing up at the amusement parks to do their daily inspections and preventative maintenance to each and every ride. Most people don't realize the time and effort involved with the amusement ride safety, but rides are inspected completely by the people who know the equipment inside and out...every single day that any ride has passengers.

The mechanics, electricians and carpenters are typically at the parks around 5 or 6 in the morning, early enough to allow them the time they need to complete any necessary lubrication or repair to their equipment. These are the same people who spend the entire winter completely rehabilitating all the rides, so you can be assured that they have the experience necessary to find any possible safety concerns. Any mechanical or electrical equipment, as you know, will have glitches. Your car has problems, your furnace has problems, computers have problems, and amusement rides also have their share of problems. That is why an experienced staff is always there to monitor the safety and maintenance of the rides. They come in long before the park opens and go home long after it
closes.

Some of the daily inspections are done after closing by the night shift, and the rest are done in the early morning by the day shift. During the winter, everyone works together on the same shift.

What part of DAILY did you miss?

Shelly
04-19-2005, 06:37 PM
Statistically, roller coasters are the safest ride in the park. Each day, safety engineers spend hours going over every inch of track, examining each portion for wear and tear, or anything that could indicate a problem. Even at the concept and design stage, the responsibility of safety is taken very seriously, as engineer Walt Davis explains in this video.

:)

And, finally....

Maintenance is Key to Keeping Coasters Safe

Parks divide their safety inspection programs into daily, weekly, monthly and yearly activities. They follow detailed manufacturer guidelines for inspection and safety -- and many parks use outside specialty companies to periodically re-inspect coasters and the work of full-time park employees.

Beyond park inspection programs, more than 85 percent of all permanent parks are subject to additional government codes and inspection requirements.

At most parks, technicians begin inspecting rides long before those who will enjoy them are awake. The daily safety inspection of roller coasters can take longer than four hours.

"We inspect every length of track, every car and every lap bar", said Dan West, Rides Maintenance Manager for Paramount s Kings Dominion Park, in Doswell, VA, USA. "Each (maintenance) worker has the right to shut down a ride. They will not let that ride operate if it is not safe." Workers walk the tracks twice -- once to check the left side and once to check the right side. They look for loose bolts and track spikes, cracked wood and any other problem that may have occurred during the night. They inspect the lift chain and braking mechanisms and they inspect the cars for loose bolts, cracks or safety devices that need attention.

Each day, the coaster is first sent around the track empty, then with technicians aboard. Technicians listen for changes in sounds the coaster makes -- sounds that might signal a loose bolt or track spike.

Monthly inspections are a more detailed look at the coaster s machinery and track. And yearly inspections involve taking every coaster car apart and rebuilding it, replacing wood that has shown wear and replacing track that may show wear.

At least once per year, most parks X-ray their track or use magnetic scanners to check for metal stress or welds that need attention.

The daily inspection of tubular steel metal coasters is slightly different from that for wooden coasters. Technicians cannot walk the entire track. Instead, they use high-power binoculars to check joints and key metal parts that would otherwise be out of reach.

Technicians know just how tight key bolt assemblies are, and use binoculars to literally count the number of threads left exposed after the bolt has been tightened. If the number of exposed threads changes, technicians know the bolts must be tightened.

They have actual engineers there each moring before the parks open to check for potential problems.....also many of those rides have computer sensors in them into a main control room on the premises.....those kids just buckle you in and turn it loose.....if those teenie boppers were the ones checking it I can assure you there would be a heck of alot more accidents than the very low incidents you hear about now....I also think that the parks are scrutinized by government agencies.

BTW....most park accidents are cause by the general public not following the simple rules like:
Don't stand up during the ride.
No horesplay.
Keeping your hands in the car.

Are going to blame the park if some moron stands up on a coaster 200' up at 70 mph and gets blown out and falls to there demise?

...guess I am going to have to prove you wrong. I have really liked roller coasters for more than 5 years and I do know a lot about them. Even tho the Stratosphere Tower is very tall ( it is 1,149 feet tall, but the coaster is built on the 909 foot level)that doesn't make the "High Roller"- the name of the coaster a top of the Stratosphere Tower that high. Yes It will make it feel like you are 909 feet up in the air, which is true but that doesn't make High Roller that tall. I don't have the exact numbers on how tall the coaster is, all I know is that It is not as tall as TTD and Kingda Ka. The coaster is crap anyways. Its rough. The current tallest coaster right now that is operating is Top Thrill Dragster (420 feet) at Cedar Point in Ohio, like I have said before. Once Kingda Ka (456 feet - i got the numbers confused the first time I think) is finished and is open It will be the tallest.

I own amusement rides, your not telling me anything I dont know about customer stupidity.

If you own amusement rides then I have a problem with your arguments of inspector's ages.

1) If you actually do own rides then you should already know this and it would never been discussed.

2) You said what you did to get a rise out of people.

3) If you really believe this....what rides do you own so I can keep away from them....if you actually have no qualified inspectors and someone does get hurt on one of your rides you would be liable in a big way for negligence.

As for slipping on the water....that is like the lady suing McDonald's because her HOT COFFEE was too hot.

Correct. I think it is called. ACE-American Coaster Enthusiasts

"Welcome to the official site of the American Coaster Enthusiasts, the world's largest club of amusement ride enthusiasts. ACE was founded in 1978 as a not-for profit, all volunteer club to foster and promote the conservation, appreciation, knowledge and enjoyment of the art of the classic wooden roller coaster and the contemporary steel coaster.

Our club has grown from a handful of members to over 8,000 members representing all 50 states, DC, and 12 countries. We publish a bimonthly newsletter and a quarterly magazine for our members. We also sponsor several events at parks each year. If you love the thrill of the twists, turns, drops, and loops of a roller coaster, this club (and this site) is for you!"

Actually, as an engineer that has been responsible for the design and construction of several amusement rides, I can tell you that some of the maintenace departments are top notch, and some are just a rag-tag collection of guys they picked up off the street. And you are dealing with some of the stupidest, laziest people in the world when it comes to some park visitors and personell.

Basically, we have to design the things so idiot- and neglect-proof that nothing serious will occur. Occasionally, you will hear of people getting "stuck" in a roller coaster, but in fact that is due to safety "gates" that stop the coaster if something could even possibly be wrong.

From what I have seen dealing with Fiesta Texas, they are one of the better Six Flags Parks as far as maintenance crews are concerned. They have one ride that has a lot of downtime at other parks (not to be disclosed), that they have a better record on. A lot of the medium-sized rides have multiple installations worldwide, to spread out development costs. Six Flags does have corporate guidelines on the design of new rides that go in their parks.

The condition of the ride says a lot about its maintenance. If it is in good shape, odds are they keep a tight ship.

When will fiesta texas ever build anymore rollercoasters? They've had the newest ones since 99 I believe with nothing really added except that water ride they added last summer. Other them parks blow us away when it comes to coasters! Anyone work at fiesta texas that knows something?

Actually, Superman Krypton Coaster was added in 2000. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is more known for its shows. We have won the best shows like 7 years in a row. We did add Tornado last season, which is a pretty good ride. Like all Six Flags parks have a Tornado so they are useless now. Fiesta Texas might get a custom flyer right where Jokers Revenge use to be. That is the most liekly place they will put any coaster at this time. We probably wont know till the end of the season if we will get anything next year or not.

Something like this. This coaster is a clone, which means there is more than one like it. We might get something like this, but It wont be copied from some one else. It will be unique.

The tallest rollarcoaster is in Vegas on top of the Stratoshere.

You are 1100 ft high.... having your balls hide inside when you look down to commonplace.

Here is view from it at night.

I'll be in Vegas on Monday staying at the Stratosphere. I can't wait to try out the ride!

The ride might not have that big of an impact as being on top of the building does. There is also a shot ride on top of it, which launches you up in the air i belive. It is just like Scream at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

I read somewhere....can't remember where.....that said parks were under some type of government scrutiny.....6 flags has a good track record I have heard as well........

I used to live in Lynchburg, Va. and frequently went to a park in Roanoke-Salem area called Lakeside.....its coaster "Shooting Star" was in very poor shape.....I rode it once and felt it sway badly and decided to stay away from it and ride the bumper cars instead.

TPark, who does the inspections on your rides

The fairs we go to hire NAARSO certified inspectors, who prob go over each ride before the fair starts for 2 hours.

I inspect the ride myself for about half an hour daily.

Check the torque of bolts, make sure decking is level.

Gates arent banging, lights are all lit up. the whole 9 yards.

But, smartfuck Scott wants to be a prick about it so who gives a fuck.

the CPSC has come in and inspected sometimes, but nothing comes out of it.

I would more than welcome government regulated and heavier restrictions on rides before they are opened.

...guess I am going to have to prove you wrong. I have really liked roller coasters for more than 5 years and I do know a lot about them. Even tho the Stratosphere Tower is very tall (it is 909 feet tall not 1100 feet tall :lol ) that doesn't make the "High Roller"- the name of the coaster a top of the Stratosphere Tower that high.

There is a list of the top 10 tallest coasters in the world.

Sorry, but you are wrong. The Stratosphere tower is 1,149 feet tall according to this quote from vegas.com...

At 1,149 feet, the Stratosphere Tower is the tallest observation tower in the United States. The view from the 109th-floor deck is truly spectacular, and the rides on top are hair-raising.

I am sorry I worded it wrong. The High Roller is at the 909 foot level of the tower. We where talking about how tall the coaster is. So the coaster is built at the 909 foot level of the tower, but the tower is 1,149 feet tall. My bad.

The Statosphere coasters suck.. it's like a choo choo train... If you're not afraid of heights there's not much of a thrill...

My hubby and I flew to Ohio to ride the Top Thrill Dragster for our honeymoon. That is an awesome coaster. Very cool ride... we even saw a group get stuck at the top for a while. That was funny.

Yeah, we have a portable 150 foot free fall ride, and it has the same thing.

But we have a battery opperated emergency release switch that drops the cars to the station, brakes are magnetic so we dont worry about that, and we cna get the people out no power, wind whatever.

Cedar Point is far and away the greatest theme park I've ever been to in my life. The Raptor and The Magnum both blow away any other coaster I've ever been on. The Magnum is awesome on the first drop when it looks like it's going to drop you right into Lake Erie.

Without a doubt the best park I have ever been to. If you think the Magnum is something, go back this summer and ride the Millenium Force, it blows the Magnum away. There is one benefit to living in Michigan, you are only a five hour drive away from the greatest roller coasters in the world. I have yet to ride the Top Thrill Dragster, and I can't wait for summer to get here so I can actually go on it this time. Unless high winds, light rain, small aircraft, or direct acts of God that keep me off it once again. Best Park in the World
