Gallbladder Removal

Has anyone had their gallbladder removed? Last month I went to the ER with abdominal pain and they told me I had gallstones and so I've got my surgery scheduled at the beginning of next month.

If you've had yours removed what kind of diet plan do you follow now? The nurses told me to limit my "animal" fat intake which is basically all the good stuff but I'm pretty confident I can make a dietary change for the better.

How did your surgery go? The doc says it'll be an outpatient procedure for me meaning I'll get to go home the same day, but I've heard some people say they had to stay overnight in a hospital...I'm just trying to gauge what to expect.

Sorry that you have to have surgery. I haven't had the surgery, but I know people who did it laparoscopically and had to spend just one night in the hospital. I think you can spend 23 hours in the hospital and sleep there, but it still be considered outpatient.

I had this surgery. The only reason I stayed overnight was because my surgery was scheduled at around noon. It's not really a big deal. I couple of small cuts and a prescription of vicodin. You'll be up doing handsprings in no time.

Don't be fooled! You don't need surgery. That is just a lie that They feed us so they can fill their pockets with our money while they cut out our organs for no reason.

Can't they break up gall stones with sound waves now? Maybe they can't if the stones are too big though.

Haven't had mine removed, but my wife has, and she had no problems afterwards.

I also wondered why they remove so many gall bladders and appendixes... I mean, don't they serve some kind of important function?

I had it done a few years ago. I can't really advise much about it because I was 3 weeks out of a complicated, high risk c-section, and that affected my recovery. The laparascopic procedure itself was totally uncomplicated, but I was hospitalized 3 days for pain issues and observation. My recovery was just a bit slower than expected, but everything has been fine since then. I wasn't given any severe dietary restrictions so basically I didn't change anything and had no problems. I think if you are basically healthy, you'll do fine with it. :)

my mom had it last month, nothing serious, they just put her on prescription drugs unless she wants the operation if its serious.....

Thanks for the input everyone.

They (doctors) told me that since I've been having attacks for so long that they would only continue unless I had the removal done. They did put me on Bentyl which is supposed to relax the abdomen but it won't help keep the stones from forming. And the more stones the more damage that can be done to the gallbladder and the whole bile drainage system from the liver.

I really don't want to stay in the hospital overnight, that just creeps me out for some reason. I'm pretty positive I'll have an early appointment that day since I scheduled so far in advance.
