DeJuan Blair is accumulating fouls as fast as he garnishes rebounds.
So far I see it as 50/50 legit fouls compared to "rookie" treatment by the refs.
But if he is going to be an integeral part of the lineup he can't play passive when it comes to defense and I like his tenacity at going right back at it when called for a foul.
How long will it be before the refs start giving him the benefit of the doubt?
Hopefully by mid-season.

he'll eventually learn not to play defense with his hands.

Also factor in that fact that he's a rook, and we all know that rooks DO NOT get calls - even when they should.

A couple of times I've seen him try to draw a charge and he was either inside the circle or so close to the line that the refs gave him the rookie treatment and called him for blocking.
He clearly had position on both calls, so hopefully he will be able to get a better sense of where the line is and be able to stay outside of it when trying to draw a charge.
I think it also had a little to do with the other player getting the "star" treatment also. It doesn't help that Blair is a wall and when the opposing players make contact they end up getting the brunt of it. He'll get called for a lot of crap fouls that aren't his fault.

I suspect that whistles will be a problem for him all year long. He's getting better though. You can already see the improvement.

This.
No doubt Blair has to pay some rookie dues in terms of getting the benefit of the whistle, but him learning how to properly defend is what will keep him out of foul trouble.
