Pacquiao-Mayweather: It's time to deal

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-pacquiao-next16-2009nov16,0,2048941.story

It's a match that seems to some like a fait accompli. But obstacles exist, and they revolve around greed and rancor.

Reporting from Las Vegas - What would appear to be a natural -- a Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather super fight -- might not be. Egos, greed and grudges could get in the way.

"It's a simple negotiation," HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg said minutes after Pacquiao knocked down world welterweight champion Miguel Cotto twice en route to a 12th-round technical knockout on Saturday.

"There's so much money to be made. If it doesn't happen, there'll be a revolt. Nothing else is acceptable, and I'm speaking on behalf of the American public and the sport itself."

But obstacles exist. Will the rich rivals fight over who gets more than a 50% cut of the purse? Of course. Can Mayweather and Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter, set aside their deep personal dislike? Perhaps.

Richard Schaefer, the Golden Boy Promotions chief executive who has promoted Mayweather's last three fights, expressed confidence that he'd be able to work with Arum to make a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

Schaefer told The Times he planned to speak with Mayweather and Arum today. Pacquiao said, "It's my job to fight. It's my promoter's job to pick the fight."

Asked Schaefer: "Bob and me -- how often have we failed to make a big fight?"

Yet, that deal is expected to require a diplomatic effort on a scale usually reserved for the State Department.

Mayweather (40-0, 25 knockouts) formerly fought for Arum's promotional company Top Rank after being an Olympian but left, saying he felt obscured by the popularity of former stablemate Oscar De La Hoya. The mega paydays that followed, against De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez, have emboldened the unbeaten star's public statements that Arum shorts his fighters, including Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs).

Arum bluntly said this week that a deal will not hinge on whether he likes Mayweather -- "and I don't," he said.

Pacquiao, usually polite, uncorked some verbal blows at Mayweather earlier this month, saying he doesn't think the fight will happen because of Mayweather's attitude.

"I'm sure he doesn't want to fight me," Pacquiao said. "With Floyd, boxing is like a business. He doesn't care about the people around him watching. He doesn't care if the fight is boring. As long as the fight is over and he gets the money, it's good. I want the people to be happy. If I was in the audience, I'm going to watch the boxing because it's a good fight."

Mayweather hasn't launched back, but he does strongly believe he's the world's best fighter and has made it pretty clear he deserves the larger purse. He was considered the world's top pound-for-pound fighter before retiring for more than a year and watching Pacquiao seize the title with the battering of De La Hoya, Hatton and Cotto.

Cotto went to the hospital after sustaining several facial cuts in the loss but said he planned to fight again, with possible foes being Shane Mosley or Antonio Margarito.

As for Pacquiao-Mayweather ... .

"All we can do is try to encourage both sides to sit at a table and hammer out a deal," said Greenburg, who likened the situation to the 1971 deal struck between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, when Ali was returning from exile to face the champion Frazier. The pair struck a 50-50 purse split of $5 million, Greenburg said.

Why not 50-50 again, with so much cash available?

Both Mayweather and Pacquiao have displayed powerful greed. Pacquiao kept asking for more money to fight Ricky Hatton in May until the Hatton camp nearly walked.

Now, Pacquiao is likely going to be able to say his fight with Cotto easily surpassed Mayweather's September million-seller against Juan Manuel Marquez. But Mayweather already has a reply, as verbalized by Schaefer.

"How did Pacquiao-Marquez do versus Mayweather-Marquez? How did Pacquiao-Oscar do versus Floyd-Oscar?" Schaefer asked, well aware of the disparity.

Greenburg made it clear: "Floyd's calling the shots for this fight to happen."

And Arum's matchmaker at Top Rank, Bruce Trampler, said it's naïve to believe intangibles like "the good of boxing" will influence the deal.

"This has nothing to do with that," Trampler said. "These are two businessmen who are going to do what's best for themselves."

Said Schaefer: "Getting them together is a mega-fight that has to be made. We'd all have to be morons to not let this happen."

i went to mannys post fight concert where i met mannys agents assistant, i was asking him about when manny was coming and we talked more about manny, he said if everything goes perfect then PBF is next and JMM is no more, they want one more fight and PBF is the only person on that list

Fuck, just do a 50/50 split. This would be such an enormous and career-defining fight for both of them. I don't see any way either fighter could possibly get a bigger payday than they'll get going against each other.

MAYWEATHER EYES HATTON, SALITA OR QUITANA IN THE UK INSTEAD OF PACQUIAO? (http://fighthype.com/pages/content6270.html)

Forget what you've heard about a potential mega-fight between multi-division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao. Sources close to the information have informed us that Mayweather, who's been seen working out at his Las Vegas gym more than usual lately, already has a fight date lined up in the UK. According to one source, the three potential opponents in consideration are former welterweight champion Carlos Quintana, welterweight contender Matthew Hatton or jr. welterweight contender Dmitriy Salita.

Roach said Friday that he also wants JMM to "shut him up". lolRoach and Manny need to stop the catch weight bullshit.

Roach wants JMM at 145. JMM has no chance at 145.

JMM already beat Manny in 2004 and 2008. I don't care what the judges scored for both fights -- the boxing fans know JMM won in 2008.

Maybe JMM should stop kissing the canvas and he'd win one "officially". To me both fight could have easily gone either way. Some rounds i had for Marquez while my friends had for Pacquiao, and vice versa. Thats how good and close the fight was. All the fighter can do is control the technical points...which in Marquez's case, the fact that he loses points by getting knocked down (4 times total) and the fact that he cant do the same to Pacquiao afftected his scores.

It tells me that Marquez won more rounds but got points deducted because of knockdowns. 2008 tells me that the fight was very close and could have gone either way based on perception..probably could have been a Marquez win if he didnt get knocked down. Once again...stop kissing the canvas and maybe you'll win one.

Also, the boxing record shows he didnt win the fight in 2008. ;)

JMM did enough to get the win in 2008. Manny and Roach were thrilled to get out of there with a win and thanked their stars he was whipped by Floyd so they never have to fight JMM again.. I mean look at some of this press row scoring of that fight..

and based on those scores, it looked like a fight that can go either way. I bet if we look at those 114-113 scores, they would have different wins in different rounds. The rounds wernt as clear cut compared to lets say Pacman/Cotto where a majority gave rounds 1 and 5 to Cotto...then some even gave round 10.

BTW..if Pacman and Marquez fight now, you think Marquez would win?

No Manny would win now because i think JMM has took too much damage but heading into the Floyd fight there was still talk of another fight with them a fight I doubt Manny wanted any part of.. And yes the scores are close but when that many people score it close for one guy something is not right.

i guess ive just seen more "WTF judge scoring" fights that got me puzzled. Dont get me wrong, that was a sigh of relief, I didnt know who was going to win. But in no way am i going to be crying robbery for a close and awesome fight like that one. Now when i was watching Vera two weeks ago...that got me going 'WTF!" lol
