So, I searched through this forum to see if there was an older thread on this topic directly. I didn't see one, so... This thread is for posting your own photography. No matter the genre or style...

I haven't been a photographer for long, and have only been photographing people since January of this year, but I'm very pleased with my progress and, surprise, surprise, want to show it off. Plus, I love commenting on others' images as well... Post your own images to this thread for comments and critique. I welcome both...

I've had no complaints, other than I wish I'd have spent a bit more for the next model up for built-in sync jacks, rather than the adapter that I have to use. Small things. Quality of the images I've never had an issue with. While it's only 10 mgs and, I crop in frame, so I maximize my resolution and image quality. Have to do these small things when you have a lesser camera, but these are things that are goo to be in the habit of doing anyways.

First of all nice pictures. She's very pretty and the way she looks fits the mood of the pictures very well. She's much prettier in the second picture, but the first photo is better. I would have preferred if you couldn't see her hand in the first picture, but it's still very nice, romantic and nostalgic. Excellent work!
Another thing about the first frame. If she would have turned just slightly more to the camera, just enough that you could guess the right side of her face in the dark, it would soften the hard edge between light and shadow which is creating a sharp edge on the outline of her nose.
A little more red or just a litle more color intensity (careful since it's easy to go overboard) in her hair and lips would bring out the paleness of her skin even more and you would have a truly classical portrait. But I'm really nitpicking at this stage :)

I shot this photo maybe 200m from my house, almost by accident since I don't always have my camera handy, no color correction less than 5% level correction:

Thanks for the comments and critique. I credit my rapid progress to my ability to accept both and then apply both to my next shoot. I told my professors last semester that while it feels great to get my ego stroked by excessive/unwarranted praise, such doesn't help me make up the time I've lost in photography, nor help me improve from shoot to shoot. I instructed them to find a specific detail that most wouldn't comment on, and critique it. So, thanks. I can still apply some of your comments/critiques. I could add a layer and soften the shadow on the nose in image one, as well as bump up the red/vibrance to a further level, then, if needed bump down saturation a smidge. I don't go overboard with photoshopping, but each image has about two hours, and prolly could stand an hour more each.

Amazing shot. Aside from the setting, which is fantastic, and the level of diffused lighting due to clouds, which sets both an eerie and yet approachable quality, your framing is perfect. It looks/sounds like you nailed F-Stop and Shutter speed with your minimal post production. Love the silhouetted aspect of the subjects of the image. Not sure if this is more to do with the angle of the light, the cloud cover, your camera settings or a combination of all three, but the mood it helps to create is amazing. Lucky you had your camera.

Was never able to get these type of nature shots. Not sure why... I love nature photography, but whenever I think I've finally got that image, I'm typically disappointed. Great work... Great identification of an image.

My only comment pertains to what appear to be telephone poles sandwiching the tree on the left side of the image. One is much more noticeable than the other, but each works to distract slightly from the timeless feel of the setting and mood. Shouldn't be too difficult to photoshop each out. I feel it would further the setting/mood portrayed by the image.

...

It was pure luck. The weather was cloudless and at the early hour of the shot a combination of morning dew and fog was lifting due to the increased power of the sun. There was a slight breeze that created the layers in the fog.

I just took my time shooting (took around 20 shots) and paid attention to the framing.

I agree fully on the phone pole comment - they are distracting.

A little later. The fog almost gone, just enough of it to give volume to the sun rays:

The sunstreams are amazing, telephone lines distracting (but an easy fix), overall, however, it lacks the "wow" factor of the other image. Amazing, and I'm definitely jealous of the shot, but I could see that first image (sans telephone poles) hanging up as art in a lot of place.

The last image is my attempt to recreate a vintage look. Soft, faded colors, muted tones, but still very distinct edges. The left side is blank strategically, as I want to use it as a promotional business card or possible poster/ad should I get that involved. Also, I wanted to allow them the chance to add text to the image, should they want. Naomi told me they added the text of "In Your Eyes" to the image via digital file and made a large print to adorn their wedding reception.

I love this image. I'm a fan of BW photography, but cannot do it well. I love the interplay between the light and the shadow; that half of the fan, at random, is either in light with the coil providing contrasting shadow of interesting design, or that it's in entire shadow. Great shot. Liked 'em all, but love this image. Simple, yet fascinating.

Absolutely. It's one of those shots you want to make just to understand the trick and show off how good your camera and lens is. I love how the rays came out and how one of them is actually iluminating the ground. But otherwise a boring shot.

Amazing settings to help distract from rather bland expressions/poses... they are all interesting to look at, and they are certainly amazing, but if you took away the interest in the settings, I think the subjects would be merely average.

At least as far as his wedding images. I think his images are really nice to have, but I'm not getting that emotional connection to anything other than the setting. Take that away and its very bland.

It's really good, all told. I'm jealous of his ability to capture such a setting, created or natural. They make for amazing image elements, BUT I found myself distracted by the setting rather than focused on the subjects. If you subjects are not equal focus of the image, then there's something lacking with their presentation. All of my stuff is studio, so I have worked with keeping all else to a minimum and maximizing the subject. He should get back to the basics with his subjects, working with new poses, angles, emotions, adornments, then once his subject sells the image without the setting, apply his new subject types to those settings and he'd have world-class images.

His settings really are amazing, though. Just gotta make the subjects work as well in such a setting, else they get lost, which, in any portraiture, is a bad thing.

Beautiful closeups. That's an aspect of photography I'd like to get into one day. The crystal is very good. Love the reflective light. I wonder if side/backlighting could have helped it pop just that much more? Only comment.

Thanks. This is the image that turned everything in portraiture around for me. Before this image I didn't take any chances and stuck with the basic lighting setup. I developed this image entirely myself, and receiving people's reactions to the results gave me the confidence in my ability/creativity to handle all that was required. From there, I took more chances and started planning every detail with the models days prior to the shoot.

The two images I posted in my original post in this thread are a direct result of this image. It's no coincidence that Jessie is the same model in each, either. She's both quite the muse and clay for my creativity.

Also, thanks for the comments via PM. I really appreciate it.

These are my favorites in the thread. I can't pick between them which I like best though.

This one just really tears at your heart; maybe I'm personifying him too much, that that dog looks devastated living in a shelter.

You'll be happy to know that my interactions with this dog, Genesis, were seen by a family hanging around the shelter during that same time frame. I spent like six hours there, and half that time was with this one dog. I was told later on that the family observed the dog reacting to me/with me and they feel in love. She was adopted by that family about an hour after I left. Beautiful dog. Had some pit bull in her, but was mostly Boxer mutt. She had tiger-type colors of orange, brown, black and white. Just gorgeous.

You guys have talent, why do I say that? It seems I have found over the last 12 years the people who are great artists and photographers are people like yourselves. What I mean is the film has no idea who is cicking the camera button it only knows if it is light or dark or if the lens is out of focus.

For exzample you can get a 8 year old kid to take a picture of the statue of liberty and it's 10 times better than a man who is 35 years old taking the same picture.

The camera is not bias or racist, but I have notice what separates an artist and photographer from someone who just happens to have a camera and owns a paint brush is "Confidence"

Everyday I run into people either in person or online that have no faith in themselves. I go to the open mike shows at the comedy clubs and i see many comics who are funny as shit and when I tell them they need to try out for a contest or maybe do a live show on a weekend they always say "I am not good enough"

I run into these people everyday online also. They make cool sketches and photo shops and i tell them to enter them in a contest and they always say "I am not that good yet"

Why do people have so low of self esteem in their lives? BigZax is one funny guy if you ever meet him in person and yet he thinks he can never do stand up.

hell 90% of the jokes i see here at ST are better than what I hear at the open mic shows. Joe chgalupa,Mrs Maloxx,shugarbear,Slomo.user666,4cc.Mookie,spurswo man,ASF,Nbadan,Taco,Duncan228,PandaSpur,CuckinFunt ,Lj,Kori, and many others (who's screen nmaes i can't remember) are funny as hell but if you ask them to write for SNL or do open mike they will say " I am not that good"

My point is 91% of all talent out their is confidence it's only 5 % talent and 4% nerves.
If only many of you with cameras would actually take the next step you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.

here is are a few websites that loves new talent I hope I see some of you there one day.

if you want to get hosed, check out any local Wolf Camera shop. they have to pay rent, so they jack up their prices.

example. a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens that i wanted to buy, cost me $1799 online, and $2200 in the store. just so i could get it that same day.

for BRAND NEW:
amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/)
b&h. (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/)

for USED:

no. b&h is only in ny city.

i'm telling you, though, get in online - you'll save a lot, trust me.

if a few hundred $$ doesn't matter, then you can get them at best buy, costco, or wolf camera...depending which camera you want, of course.

What kind of strobes do you use? How many, and how are they set?

JMarkJohns
01-01-2010, 06:18 PM
I figure you're asking Spurstalk.com's ringer ^ up there :) but I typically use six AlienBees 800 and two hot lights. T

Hot Light = HL
AlienBee 800 = AB8

________WALL_________ (roughly 15 feet wide)
HL___\_________/___HL (off in any lighting not high key)

AB8__/_________\___AB8 (anywhere from 1/2 to full strength, typically 3/4 strength

AB8__| _subject_ |___AB8 (anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 strength, typically 1/2 strength

AB8__\_________/___AB8 (typically offside 1/2 and focusside 3/4 strength

I like to experiment by randomly unsyncing a strobe or turning it off, rather than down. This way I can see how shadows are used rather than just adjusted levels of light.

EDIT: The setup and settings for these two images are the exact same. The difference is the number of lights on from that basic grid.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2576/4106153081_31f7eb5df8_m.jpghttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2674/4106949440_3b57683563_m.jpg
In the first image, the main light (right) is on, the right side light is on, the left backlight is on while the right, along with the two left hand side and front lights are off.

________WALL_________ (roughly 15 feet wide)

_____Black backdrop_____ (seven feet from subject)

AB8__/____________ (anywhere from 1/2 to full strength, typically 3/4 strength
_______subject_ |___AB8 (anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 strength, typically 1/2 strength
______________/___AB8 (typically offside 1/2 and focusside 3/4 strength

I was downtown here in san antonio last night for new years and I saw these cops put some guy against a fence and they were checking him for drugs or whatever so I found it interesting and I took some pictures... one cop noticed me and came up to me and said "I wouldn't do that if I were you." He put his hand on my back and gave me a little push and told me to be on my way. Is it against the law to take a picture of a cop? I probably should have asked him but he didn't look too happy and I didn't want to make things worse and ruin my night but I am very curious why he didn't want me taking pictures.

Doesn't matter. It is easier to be in control with a SLR, but you can take good pictures with compact digital cameras - actually the quality of the small cheap cameras is continuously going up. The price of the camera shouldn't be an obstacle if you want to improve your skills.

computer art has many definitions, it can be part photo and part animation , it can be something created in MS paint. But if you have talent it will show.

The person above would get tossed out of any photo shop topic on this board. And he expects to win 1,000.00 dollars?

Now this guy was creative he took some sink facet heads and made this.

http://www.moca.virtual.museum/donnie2010/imagesonline/image008.jpg

It's simple good colors not too much crap and different. he should be in the top three.

Now lets look at what this fool is try to accomplish...

http://www.moca.virtual.museum/donnie2010/imagesonline/image030.jpg

Some people just don't know when to top adding shit.

Then you have this guy who is trying to be the mental case of the bunch?

http://www.moca.virtual.museum/donnie2010/imagesonline/image017.jpg

Unless this guy was born without arms and legs and made that 4th grade drawing by sticking a marker in his ass, I just don't get it.

now these guys are ok but they let the software do all the work and i think it doesn't show much talent.

http://www.moca.virtual.museum/donnie2010/imagesonline/image020.jpg

http://www.moca.virtual.museum/donnie2010/imagesonline/image006.jpg

Don't get me wrong they are cool to look at when your taking a shit, but where is the human element? where is the creativity, it's just someone using Auto CAD or some other software.

Then you have people who are trying to say something but no one can figure out what it is.

So, I'm gonna be a total ass and bump my latest image. I'm not necessarily looking for praise, but being that this is my first pregnancy shoot, and that this was an image I wanted to capture going in, I'm curious to receive comments/critique on the image itself, and maybe the ideas that construct it.

I'm a professional. If you don't like something, let me know what and why. Thanks.

It's a nice picture, but personally, I don't think that darkness / pregnancy matches very well. But I'm an amateur, take it for what it's worth.

I've had that comment a lot. I was a bit worried. This young woman has lived a very hard life, and the baby is the product of some very poor decisions. The baby has quite literally saved this young woman from alcoholism, drug abuse and a very bad relationship. The image is the story of that.

Also, I tried white, but she's too white. Bright light is wasted upon her and she easily washes out with it or bright attire. I have many standard happy, colorful images, but none even come close to the impact of the above image. If one were to google search pregnancy images, half are on dark backdrops, or have this sort of tone to them. For artistic photography, black is the background of choice (or dark, in my case, since I used heavy shadow and strategic bright light at her feet for the effect).

EDIT: Here's an example of a similar mood, but brighter imagery...

I'm always a bit hesitant critiquing someone else's work since I've only just started doing photography, specially from someone that does it for a living. Having said that, I was actually wondering the same thing Fernando was wondering, but in retrospect, I think the dark backdrop does work better in capturing the escense of what you're trying to portray. Its unusual, but it definitely works. I like it a lot.

It's understandable. Like I hinted at, it wasn't taken for the masses. Upon seeing it, and without even having to explain the symbolism, the mother broke into tears. She knew. The subject likes to smile, so she like another with similar lighting/effects. Still, I like to gauge others reactions to a personal piece. I want to see if it still strikes a nerve. It's about 50/50 at the moment, but I've had people and photographers I love and respect be almost speechless upon seeing the image. It's both a strikeout and a homerun. Pretty unique.

EDIT (6-7-10): As I suspected, this image quickly became my most positive commented/awarded/faved portrait, holds the highest comment/view ratio of any and just won 1st in a weekly photo contest on Flickr. It's approaching 200 comments, a mere 60 hours after being uploaded.

EDIT (6-13-10): Finally starting to slow down. Still, it's more than doubled my previous records for portraiture, and is far and away my most commented, awarded, honored and faved image, regardless of genre. It's featured in over one dozen HOF galleries for groups, and is in the running to become a front-page image for two, a huge recognition for any image.

An expensive camera is much more useful in Paris than a car. Anyway those were taken with a cheap compact digital.

Hey guys,
I know very of photography but I'm a drawer/artist. Any tips on what I can do to start? What type of things to pictures to take? Camera brands? I'm planing to buy the aNext camera with a 16-55 lens. What's the difference between a 16-55mm lens and a 18mm lens besides the size of the lens? Any though about this camera? I'm going to be using this camera for photography, make digital drawings(photoshop), and art(drawings, paintings, etc).

My best explanation is control. With the compact digital there's always a bit of luck involved. In the shot of the Bistro I took 7 pictures of it until the camera focused on the part I wanted it to focus (the chairs in front - notice that the red neon is slightly out of focus). I know all the tricks with the digital compact and sometimes I still can't get the shot I want.

With a pro SLR you're in control. The focus is right where you want it, if you play with the exposure, you get exactly what you should be getting, so in a way you can only really learn photography with an SLR (in theory a compact that has the full manual mode is also a good learning tool). If you know how to take good picture with an SLR you'll take better pictures with a compact.

This said the advances in the digital compact cameras of the last 10 years have been tremendous. You can do stuff with a 150$ digital camera that you couldn't do with any of the compact film cameras. Internal digital processing and low prices have really put good photography within reach of anybody who's interested.

You KGB guys have it made. you get to travel all over, you have to look over your shoulder but you still get to travel. any pics of Amsterdam?...

Yeah, we don't even have to look over our shoulder that much anymore :D I guess our gain is North Korea's loss :lol

Nah I don't have any new pics of Amsterdam. I rarely have the opportunity to walk around the cities I'm in anymore. My last three visits to Paris this year (before this one) were all in the duration of a few hours. I actually barely saw the city because of the subway.

Still beats working at a desk in an office (at least it does for me - you'd be surprised how many people hate traveling and actually quit their jobs because of it).

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5004/5296647327_ff04973c7e_b.jpg

I loved the three different looks. There was never any intention to photograph anything but the last pic, but the first Sunrise was amazing, and the dim tones of the sunset were equally captivating. I had known the next morning would bring snow, so when I saw the first sunrise, I figured I'd just go with it.

I'm optimistic I'll be able to get the model interest in furthering the idea. This was an older image that I just played with to see if I'd even like it. I've had enough positive responses from my model friends that I shouldn't have a problem. I'm excited.

Until then...

This is an image I took as part of my course development. I wanted to create an theme project for my students where they took a lyric or artistic line and create a visual interpretation of it. This is my example based off the Chris Cornell song SunShower...

The line that inspired it was "Though your garden's gray, I know all your graces someday will flower... in the sweet sun shower."

Experimenting with HDR photography lately. This is the first one I like (although I am not a 100% happy with it yet)

Love HDR photos. It's tough to get right, though. I'll see if I can dig up a few of my attempts. Have you ever seen Stuck in Customs? I'd say this guy pretty much sets the standard for HDR.

Great link. I didn't know it.

HDR is often a bit too cartoonish for my taste (and I have the impression it is not always so on purpose), but at the same time it can be a technique that yields fantastic results and add another creative layer to photography.

A lot of the photos on that site fit into this description. I need to look at it much more. Thanks!

not sure what is better Slomo posting, or a King sighting.

Either way it's a win....

Hey Slomo... any KGB photos to share?

Yeah, there's a very fine line between making it look too over produced (cartoonish) and making it really sharp and pop. That guy has it nailed down.

He gives a tutorial of his process somewhere on that site.

Unfortunately no. I've been laying low mostly in the civilized west for the past couple of years. But this might change real soon (again).

Super small apeture here for everything to be in focus. Reminds me of photos of Socotra Island:
