You know, for years everyone always talked about how Belichick was always in Peyton Manning's head, always a step ahead of him.
It seems like, in these past 3 years, it's the other way around. This has to be the 4th or 5th time I can remember Belichick going for it on 4th down against the Colts.

Very true.
Choking is a state of mind. Just because you were clutch in the past doesn't mean you will always be clutch forever more.
After the past 4 years, the Patriots are bonafide chokers.

i think maybe they just didnt like their chances if they gave it back to manning period. 60 seconds earlier they watched him go 80 yards in about two minutes, not to mention doing without having to spend his timeouts.
if they make it belichek is a master and peyton gets to keep staring at his cleats.
was it a good idea to try to convert it? not really. if manning gets his hands on the ball you could be in trouble
was it a good idea to punt it, thus give it to manning and let him run the second 2 minute drill on your gassed defense in as many minutes? not really. if manning gets his hands on the ball you could be in trouble

I certainly wouldn't have called a 2 yard throw that might not have converted even if he wasn't bobbling the catch, and that's a moot point because I never would have gone for it on 4th down at my own damn 30 yard line with the game on the line.
monosylab1k
11-16-2009, 12:42 AM
Punt it, you've got a solid punter, so it's possible you can get them back around their own 30 or 20, even further with a favorable bounce. And you give your defense a chance to succeed. If they fail, then it's all pointless. But you at least give them a chance to succeed.

exactly! who one of the best coaches in history of the nfl really have done that in hopes of winning the game?! no. He is a also thinking about the future! thats why he is such a good coach, cause he can see the hole picture! He does things his way mono let him do his thing and al will be ok, unless they play the steelers, and the steelers don't play like dog shit, then u might have a little bit of a issue.

If his defense was gassed, why the hell would he put them in that position? Give them 70 or 80 yards and the increased margin for error that goes with it. The more ground the Colts have to cover, the better chance they'll make a mistake somewhere along the line.
The clock management on the part of the Patriots was horrible too. Calling a timeout with the clock stopped right before the 4th-down play was galactically stupid.

I know people think Belichick was nuts to try with his offense, but I'm not so sure.
Was it a bit unorthodox and ballsy? Sure. But sometimes, you need a coach to make those decisions in the NFL.
As someone stated before, if it would've worked, he would've been hailed a genius. Pats fans from every corner would've been saying how it was a great decision and they would've done the same thing.
Now...why they chose to throw it is beyond me. I don't understand why they wouldn't try to push it 2 yards.
They took a gamble and lost. It happens.

Going for it on 4th and 2 was not stupid. They would have won the game had they converted. And since Indy could not have won with a FG, he still seemed to trust his defense to protect 28 yards or whatever it was.
But calling a play that results in Faulk trying to catch it near or at the first down marker was REALLY stupid. Have Faulk run a slightly deeper route and give yourself some padding, for crying out loud!
Pete Carroll's call on 4th and 2 against Texas was even stupider, BTW. Why have Bush standing on the sidelines, unable to even be a decoy? Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, knew you were going to White up the gut on that one, genius!

That call of Belicheat, was CLEARLY Peyton being inside his head and owning him. He was afraid to give the ball back to Manning with 2 minutes starting anywhere on the field. The colts could of started at their own 20 and they still would of drove down and scored.
So really it was a smart move by Belicheat, Peyton was going to lead that team to a win no matter what! So why not put it in Brady's hands to keep it away from Peyton....If anything the pats should put the blame on Tom "deadbeat dad" Brady for failing to convert 2 yards.

11-16-2009, 02:16 PM
looks like I'm the only person on earth, that liked the call!
let me review: for weeks we hear: "they give manning the ball with XX seconds left, so they basically already lost!" and if a coach decides to not give him the ball (or tries to), everyone is beating on him!
I'm not a Pats fan...(I'm a steelers guy)...and if you ask me, which team I'm routing for in that feud, I'd say: Colts all the way, I hate those pats-cheaters and hate, how get are compared to my spurs (steelers are the only team, that makes sense, if any)...so I have no interest to help Belichek...but that call was just right!
whats the difference between Manning going about 70 yards or 29? IMHO it only gives Manning more room to score with a lot of field in front of him. If he wants to get 40 yards on that last drive, he gets it. So he will get to the 30 anyway...maybe even scoring earlier with one deep bomb. if you can stop him, it will be on that last 30 yards, when the field gets tighter.
so Bill decided, to take a rist for that 40 yards. Brady isnt a bad QB last time I checked and I would give him about 40-50% chance of getting the first down (actually higher, but thats more coz I fear him)...but if he does, the game is basically over...if he doenst Manning has lets say 50% to get that TD...while he would have gotten it from that 70yard line as well...maybe by 30%...maybe someone feels that numbers are not right, but I think however you turn it, Bill gave his team the best chance to win it...its not like the Colts only needed a FG and you hand them the ball in FG-range!
Only downside...and I agree, that its a major one...ist, that he showed no trust in his defense. but even there he has a chance, that they say: hell, we show him, waht we are capable of.
and I think, its a wise team of grown men...so they understand someone rather having Manning stay on the sideline than getting the ball!
to conclude: I liked that call and think, everyone would have celebrated Belicheck if it had worked out.
I'm really courious about bill simmons reaction!

Everyone everywhere is upset about Belliceck going for it, and losing the game. But why is the game a big deal? They basically kicked the shit out of the Colts in their own stadium for 45 minutes. The Patriots will win the division regardless of whether they won last night or lost. Last night didn't really matter, and like last night showed, home field doesn't really matter either because the Pats could beat the Colts at home.
So they went for it, they lost, but does it really matter? No it doesn't because it's November.

I'm not worried about the Steelers or Chargers (Pats own both of those teams). The Bengals might be trouble, but really the Colts are the big threat to NE. Getting HFA over them in the playoffs was essential. The Patriots are a great bad weather team, and the Colts just aren't. Pats-Colts in Foxborough in January is a huge advantage for New England. Patriots' defense sucks
It got tired at the end of the game because of several injuries that left them with virtually no players to sub in and out, but for three quarters it played well. In the 4th quarter 14 of Indy's 21 points were because of the stupid soft zone prevent Peyton shredded quickly, a bullshit pass interference call, and being left with less than 30 yards to defend. The defense by no means sucks. WAY better than it was in 2007. Hopefully this was a one time thing and BB hasn't actually lost his mind.
I'm a little pissed NE didn't go after LJ at all. Maroney sucks royally, the way the offense is right now they've got no way to close games with the run. I'll take LJ's off the field issues if it means he'll be a good downhill runner instead of run for a yard or two and then find a place to fall down like Maroney does.

Listen to how retarded you sound. You're saying I'd be complaining that NE didn't go for it inside their own 30 yard line? For almost the entire game, NE's defense had been doing a great job. Indy had 14 points entering the 4th quarter. Before New England decided to go into their soft zone prevent D, Peyton looked horrible. You give the D a chance.

Few things I'd like to point out
Regarding our defense:
It's true the defense brought pressure on MANNING during the first three quarters and caused some 3 and out. However, most of those were due to Indy's WRS dropping balls they normally catch 9 out of 10. Let's not overrate NE defense.
Peyton's interceptions are misleading also because one was abnormal release (a really duck) and the other was a miscommunication with WAYNE. To tell you the truth, being a pats fan I never thought during the game that our D was owning the colts offense. I was well aware that we caught many breaks. I was still nervous in case of a close game because let's face it, Peyton ain't the chocke artist he used to be. The proof was that he just marched down the field in one min without using a timeout and scored a TD. You can't give him the ball with 2+min and all his timeouts. No matter where he starts he was going to score.
Our offense on the other hand was in full control the whole game. Our playmakers are on that side of the team. When I saw Tom Brady lobby to stay on the field for that 4th down I was hoping Belichik would agree. It was our reasonnable chance of winning the game.
The playcall on the other hand is questionnable because the play called has to give you at least one more yard than you need. it's football 101.
All in all, I'm happy with the decision to go for it on 4th down once more if we ever face Manning again and the game is close, and time running out.

Sorry, didn't know you were a Pats fan. If that's your legitimate opinion then your entitled to it (although I disagree). I thought you were someone who hates the Pats and was just arguing the opposite of what Pats fans thought for the hell of it.
Plus I think it was a first down.
It wasn't, but if you need a support group, Dan Wetzel and Deion Sanders are already heading one up.

Wasn't that bad. He had a hall of famer throwing the ball. Plus I think it was a first down.
Then that only magnifies how dumb Belichick was for burning two timeouts killing any ability to challenge.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head. It's refreshing to see this side of the argument from a Pats fan.

I rarely watch a game with homer glasses on. And the way the game went, our best option was to win it with our offense.
My thought process (and probably Belichick's as well) was:
- Our defense is gassed and Peyton just marched the whole field and scored a touchdown in 1min without using any timeout. If we punt the ball, he will go the whole field again, score a touchdown... and we won't have time to respond.
- on the other hand, our offense hasn't been stopped by the colts all night and totalled 400 something yards. It will get 2 or 3 more yards. If by any bad luck they fail to make it, let the colts score quickly and be up by 1. Then Tom brady and friends have the ball with 2 min left to be in FG range and win the game.
What killed us is that kid Wilwhite stopped Addai at the 1 yard line when he was about to score thus allowing the colts to take the whole time off
If Addai scores there, the ball is for NE with enough time to be in FG range and win it. Again, I say it was the right call to go for it.

There were some interesting soundbites with Belichick in response to the critics.
Basically, he said he makes calls that will benefit the team, and obviously with the hopes of winning the game.
He honestly felt like that decision was for the best.
When asked if he'd make that decision again, he said, "you only get one chance." He left it at that.

I'd make the same decision in the same situation.

This is the worst a Belichick's defense has looked in a while. Either he didn't prepare them or is failing to adjust. We have to run a cover 3 now, for the rest of the game, or a dime coverage
All this really proves is Belichick was right to go for it on 4th and 2 'cause Manning would have beat him anyway. He was in the zone at the end of that game and Brees was in the zone tonight. It's hard to beat great players when they get in a rhythm like that.
That or going for it on 4th and 2 destroyed his defense's confidence and this is what they've become.
