View Full Version : Mac Vs PC

There is most likely a thread about this already but to tell you the truth this is the first time I've been on The Geek Zone forum. I searched a little bit but couldn't find anything.

Anyways, I just bought a Mac (still waiting on it to be delivered) because I have gone through about 4 PC's in like 6 years and they have been nothing but a headache! I always wondered why people keep defending PC's? To me they suck. But on the other hand it seems like usually only Mac owners praise the Mac computers. Can someone clear this up with Pro's and Cons on both systems please?

Preciate it! :toast

I think if people want to use Mac, they should use Mac. I think if people want to use PC they should use PC.

I don't like this sentiment:

I always wondered why people keep defending PC's? To me they suck.
People defend them because they like using them. PCs don't suck. At least compared to Mac. It's just a different OS.

When it comes to PC hardware you get what you pay for. I like that PC consumers have a choice between high end and low end hardware and everything in-between, as opposed to just over-priced and proprietary.

:) and i agree! well not totally but yeah if adobe would just port the apps i use to linux i wouldn't be a macOS user.

i don't hate PC's because, well, i use one. my PC just happens to be running OSX unlike most who use a flavor of winOS and or linux. it all boils down to the OS and whether or not you can get your work done most efficiently and on what platform allows you to do so, for me it's OSX.

I agree that Mac's are overpriced, however I kept getting viruses so that caused my hard drives to crash thus I had to buy new computers every couple years. If I would have just bought a Mac in the first place I would have actually saved money I think. Cause besides the price of buying new computers I had to pay for repairs and enclosures to attempt to save what was on the hard drives.

Idk if it's completely true but Mac said their computers do not get viruses, that is what sold me on them. I remember when I came back home from Iraq I had something like over 100 viruses on my HP Laptop. I paid to get it fixed then it crashed a month later...

I think it's interesting when I hear someone's computer lasts them less than two years. Really? What are you possibly doing to that poor machine? Every computer I've ever owned has lasted at least 4 years. I've had three Dells, an IBM, an Acer, and now my custom built gaming PC. 3 Dells from a company that's supposed to be maligned as a source of crap, and none of them has ever given me a major problem?

I download questionable files (cracks for games, random TV from bittorrent, movies, etc.). I game regularly which puts the system at 100% output. I use my computers ALL the time. I throw my laptops around and bring them with me on vacation. Yet all of my computers have never given me any major problems.

I really don't understand how someone can junk a PC in 2 years unless they are so careless with it that they don't realize when downloading a file called supertrojan.exe that it's going to come back to haunt them.

Either I'm really, really, unconscionably lucky or people just don't take care of their machines. It's like someone whining that a new Ford Mustang is unreliable because they drive it 30,000 miles and never change the oil.

---

Anyway, I don't hate Apple computers. They are great for what they're designed to do, and offer some unique advantages to PCs. They're obviously well built.

However, I also like value for my money, I like massive beasts that can split the atom, and for me that means I'm consistently buying PCs.

For instance, at Best Buy right now there is the following laptop:

http://tinyurl.com/yfqw7h2

That's a superior gaming laptop for under $1000 with a Gig of video memory. Incredible. That's the -start- price of the lowest end Mac laptop.

How is that even possible? Do you go to the most pervaded, disreputable websites on the net? I've never had more than 1 or 2 viruses on my computer -- at any time -- in the worst case scenarios. And they were all fixed within a few minutes of clicking and at most having to system-restart.

It's just amazing to me how people can end up with even 10 viruses. I don't get it.

Lol yeah I pretty much do! I download a lot, I mean a lot, of music daily! Most of it is Torrent through Vuze but I do sometimes have to go to some questionable sites to get music I want. Like allnewhiphop.com that place has Viruses like crazy. Yeah the internet over there was generic, it's hard to explain but we had this little modem that hooked into your computer and you had to buy cards with minutes on them for a some what wireless internet. It was super slow but shit I wasn't complaining. I went over there thinking I wouldn't get any type of internet except for on the government computers where they block almost every site, except for Spurstalk I'm glad to say! :flag:

I think people who worry about viruses are basically analogous to people who have to worry about smelling like shit because they can't wipe their ass properly.

I primarily use linux for my personal computing. It's not because I'm afraid of the big bad viruses. If you know what you're doing, the virus problem should pretty much be a non-factor when determining your OS.

You're really just paying for the software and possibly for a computer that's slightly better built than most PC's, but probably on par with some of the higher end better built PC's such as Dell Latitudes for example.

too bad you can't! and don't try to haggle me with that craptastic hack of OSX for pc.

problem is you're looking at this from a "hardware to hardware" comparison when you should be looking at it from an "OS to OS" comparison. yeah macs and regular ol' pc's are the same and can be built to same but you can't just go out and buy OSX and slap it on your pc cause you want to use it. that's the difference here and yeah it sucks that macs are expensive but you get what you pay for and so far i've gotten my monies worth.

I know it might vary a little depending on the exact hardware, on the hardware I ran it on I did so without any problems. On one computer I had to swap the mini pci wireless card from another laptop because the one in it wasn't compatible, but that's no big deal.

It really is the same. Certainly I can step back and say that you can't just buy it and slap it on your PC, at least not 100% of the time, but it can certainly be done. I understand your comparison, and in some cases I do know some people can get it to run without sound, or with some other feature missing, but there is also some hardware that happens to be 100% compatible.

I never said either was better, just that I wouldn't spend the money on the hardware when it's basically the same hardware you'd find on a computer running Windows. I'd rather just buy the less expensive hardware and run OSX on it.

I've done it a few times but as I recall the first was just to see it in action on PC hardware, and the last was for my son on a netbook because he's into graphics design.

My main reason to have any type of computer is for games.

It should be pretty easy to determine where I stand in this.

And people like the OP using a PC keeps me employed so yes, I love Windows :lol.

How anyone can bone their computer up so bad in such a short amount of time is funny to me. I see it on a daily basis at work and when I go to take care of it (all but 5-10 minutes) they have this guilty look on their face. They know they went someplace they shouldn't have. It's not that hard to figure out. Yet I'm back to see them within a few weeks, often times with the same malware or virus they had previously. :lol

no, i'm right about the matter. there's no if, and, or buts about it. you can not go out and buy OSX and slap it on any ol'(hardware compatible) PC. you can however get a hacked copy and put it on a PC but then you're just running something that isn't 100% and not everything is in working order. you might as well be running winOS at that point.

No you aren't. All a hacked version does is bypass the TPM, it's almost as if you are saying that the games IronMexican plays on his 360 aren't as good as the retail ones because his firmware bypasses the copyright protection.

Yes in some cases the hardware isn't 100% compatible, but a lot of hardware out there is, because Macs are just Core 2 Duos with Intel chipsets, if you have the same hardware you're set.

there's a difference between changing firmware in a 360 to play games on a dl-dvdr and actually running OSX on your whitebox. a big difference.

personally i don't like winOS, if you couldn't tell, but i'd use a winOS system. actually right now i am using one at work and though it works fine for the most part i can tell the differences even if subtle. it's not that winOS couldn't be something great but given the evolution of the OS over the couple decades it's been in use is cause for concern. you would've thought by now things would be rolling on a good note instead of always playing cat and mouse trying to catch up to the competitors... even competitors in the gpl open-source market.

it just makes no sense when you're the big head honcho and yet your product is a complete pile of shit. step up your game!

No, what I mean is buying an iMac with the same specs as a PC costs $500 more. I don't buy the "but it works faster on Mac" argument, because that shouldn't be reflected in a price increase in hardware.

For instance, at apple.ca, upgrading a Core 2 Duo E7600 to a E8600 (they avoid using the model number) costs $220 extra. The price difference between the two CPUs is less than $130. Where did they get $220 from?

Just like all other multi-billion dollar companies, Apple using slick gimmicks and slogans in order to butt-rape customers outta their money.

It's going to be hilarious how Koriwhat keeps talking shit about the Windows OS while Windows 7 continues to dominate and receive praise from every corner of the computing market. Especially since that's his primary reason for arguing Macs are better, which is pretty much completely nullified now. Comparisons are showing that 7 is the equal of (if not superior to) Snow Leopard.

good luck! winOS always receives praise with each new version since 3.1, which was by far their best OS haha. it's like praising your kid for cleaning his room, it should have been clean to begin with!

whatever's been fixed in win7 should've been fixed a decade ago. just because they finally get it right 10 yrs later doesn't mean i'm handing them a trophy for doing so.

like i said, cat and mouse game and always trying to play catch up. linux for christs sake outshines windows in every fuckin' aspect.

btw, who is win7 dominating? please do tell.

and my whole reasoning for standing behind OSX is because i stood blindly behind winOS for yrs like you do until i finally threw in the towel and said enough is enough and demanded more quality out of a product i poured tons of money into.

btw, what's new? winOS has been dominating the market forever just like the praises for every release of winOS.

i'm not going to sit here and say win7 sucks because i've never used it but i will sit here and definitely say it's predecessors are all shit code! and if i have learned anything in my lifetime it's you don't keep investing in shit you look for something worth a damn. i found what i was looking for and that's all i can say.

win7 might be the next big thing but do i care? not at all because what i use serves its purpose and does everything all my old machines couldn't that ran winOS.

The hardware is the same. The software is a little different, and you can run Windows, or Linux, or any other x32 OS on either one.

If you do video editing or graphic art, you are more likely to get better value by getting a mac, as the software most suited to these tasks are designed for macs. However, you pay a premium for that ability.

Because there are fewer macs, there is less chance for virus conamination, as fewer people write mac viruses.

If you are a poor college student and you are NOT trying to go into the 'arts' as you major, you may want to avoid getting a mac, at least until you are a successful business man, as the price is just so damn high, even with student discounts.

Really, because the hardware is the same, the main difference is price and service. Some clients tell me that the service in the Apple store is great. Others have complained that they still don't cover the basics (nobody does) such as broken screens, and replacement batteries.

Since Windows 7 is out, I'd just get a cheepie W7 box if all I wanted to do was surf the net and write papers.

Dont pretend Mac's are invulnurable to a virus or malware. To do so is foolhardy. I also work with macs at my place of business because they are great for engineering apps like Ansys, Pro/e and alot of other CAD programs. We have had viruses on them before.

Here's just a few we have ran into when we used Tiger. So far we have been lucky with OSX with the exception of the first virus I list, but then again I can count the macs in my division on 1 hand.

Mac OS X Virus: Inqtana.A Worm

Leap.A aka Oompa-Loompa virus

Mac.Simpson Virus

Melissa.W

If Mac OS went as mainstream as Windows (IE, install on any old regular PC) We would start to see a SIGNIFICANT virus increase for the Mac OS. Dont kid yourselves Mac users.

Yeah, its definately a PEBKAC issue. No doubt.

Mac users love to spout about how their OS is so secure that they dont need anti-virus protection. They have no idea how funny that is to a real tech that works with both systems on a daily basis. They are so sure about that little myth that they dont even bother installing anti-virus software and remain oblivious when they do get infected with a virus or malware program.

If anything, get an anti-virus program to check the e-mails you may pass on to a PC user. You may not get infected by the e-mail but your contacts might if they are on a PC.

I work with both systems on a daily basis. Heck I've programmed both for the good part of the last 3 decades. We have both Mac and PC customers.
When a PC starts acting up, first thing is to check are antivirus/malware.
When a Mac starts acting up, first thing is to check is hard drive corruption.

What the average joe like you who think they know jackshit about operating systems doesn't understand is that Unix was created with security and user permissions in mind when it was designed and written, whereas in Windows, actual security was an afterthought.
As a matter of fact, the Mac had the exact same issues Windows does when it didn't have a mach kernel and a BSD system at it's core.

That said, nothing is infallible. But if you actually tried, you'll know it's much harder to escalate privileges using an exploit on current OS X in general than on Windows.

Obviously, there's much more to gain by finding a hole in Windows than on OS X, but the reality is also that the vast majority of Mac users don't need to run an anti-virus at all, and most certainly do not.

LOL @ Average Joe. Dude, I work in IT as well. Southwest Research Institute in fact. We have government contracts and cant afford any loose ends. We run McAfee on both mac and PC and run our own ePO server for definition updates. I have, in FACT, had to clean a mac of a virus. Most recently the first virus I listed just a few posts ago in your precious OSX.

Part of the problem with Mac users is that they dont run an anti-virus. When they get an e-mail containing a PC virus, they are none the wiser and sometimes end up forwarding it to PC using contacts who then get infected all because Mr. High and Mighty mac user felt he was above using anti-virus protection.

The bluetooth directory traversal vulnerability that the 'worm' you mention exploited was patched in 2006. Unless you haven't updated the OS in 3 years, the files were probably simply inert there.
And BTW, the only way to get 'infected' with that 'virus' was to manually run an application containing it.

I gather you run your own email server, seeing that you can't 'afford any loose ends'?
We do get some spam to pass through MailScanner over here, that eventually gets picked up by Mail's spam filter, but that's about it.
But I digress, that's exactly the reason Mac users don't have to care. Because it REALLY DOES NOT affect them. A PC virus should be caught by a PC antivirus. I don't see what's wrong with that.

Yes, we run an exchange server. How you would even ask how any computer would get an infected email to begin with makes me want to really question what you know about viruses.

Just because you run a mac doesnt mean you dont recieve infected e-mails. Granted, they may be targeting PC's but just because a mac user recieves the e-mail on a forward doesnt mean its no longer infected. you can still forward it on to a PC user, unknowing that it has a PC virus because your so careless enough to not run an antivirus program. Just because it reaches a Mac doesnt mean its now Virus free. :rolleyes

I really think your assuming me as a Mac hater. Im not. Mac's are awesome when it comes to CAD design programs, my problem is thst you think its such a superior OS over Windows. They both have their negatives and positives. for me, I prefer Windows for the gaming, its FAR superior in that regard. If I was into engineering apps and just surfing the web and checking e-mail, I'd go Mac. It's far superior to Windows in that regard.

bottom line, Mac isnt as superior to Windows as you think it to be. It just depends on what the user is wanting out of their OS. there is a reason most companies run Microsoft products, hence why there are so many viral attacks on the OS. Dont kid yourself into thinking if it was the other way around that Mac OS products wouldnt be just as vulnerable.

I could run the Amiga OS on a system and claim its even more secure than a Mac only because of the fact its not as widely used. I bet there are NO viruses that affect the Amiga OS.

I don't buy that at all, not when the BSD's that make up the core of OSX build on 40+ years of knowledge building operating systems designed from the ground up to be multi-user and with security in mind. Microsoft is still the new kid when here, and while they've come a long ways since the seemingly hourly concurrency bugs causing crashes in Windows 95, their codebase is both enormous and monolithic. I heard in a lecture from Alan Kay that if you printed the Windows source code and put it in a stack, it'd be the size of the Empire State Building. If you think I'm full of crap when I talk about their codebase being just a huge structure built by brute force, ask yourself why they can't ever seem to get major features like WinFS done, even though they were talking about it (and promising it) for years. I mean, this was initially supposed to be the key selling point for Longhorn (aka, Vista).
