Will Ferrell is the most overpaid star in Hollywood, according to Forbes magazine.

Ferrell's last film, "Land of the Lost," was an "epic Hollywood disaster," costing an estimated $100 million but earning only $65 million worldwide, the magazine said.

"Ferrell is no longer the sure bet he seemed after hits like 'Elf' ($220 million worldwide box office) and 'Talladega Nights' ($162 million box office)," the magazine said.

To create the list, Forbes looked at the 100 biggest stars in Hollywood. To qualify, each actor had to have starred over the last five years in at least three movies that opened in more than 500 theaters. Animated films were not included because actors tend to take pay cuts for voice work.

After calculating each star's estimated earnings and factoring in each film's operating income, Forbes determined a return-on-investment number.

For example, Ferrell's films earned an average of $3.29 for every dollar he was paid, the magazine found.

Second on the list? Ewan McGregor, whose films earned an average of $3.75 for every dollar he was paid.

Other big names on the list include Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio, who are six and eighth, respectively. For every dollar Cruise was paid, his films earned an average of $7.18. DiCaprio's return on investment was $7.52.

Drew Barrymore, the only female on the list, was seventh. For every $1 Barrymore was paid, her films earned an average $7.43.

Here are the 10 most overpaid stars in Hollywood, according to Forbes.

1: Will Ferrell

2: Ewan McGregor

3: Billy Bob Thornton

4: Eddie Murphy

5: Ice Cube

6: Tom Cruise

7: Drew Barrymore

8: Leonardo DiCaprio

9: Samuel L. Jackson

10: Jim Carrey

Seems kind of unfair to label one actor "overpaid" if a shitty movie doesn't make money.

I haven't cared for much of anything Ferrell has done post SNL.

I think Samuel L. Jackson being on the list is a product of his own work ethic. He will take any job that pays. He's been in a shitload of bad movies. He'll take a bad movie because he'll take the paycheck. And, he'll take a really small role that doesn't pay lead actor money just for the paycheck. He's been in so many dam movies, the law of averages are bound to pull him down.

So what are the numbers for the actors that aren't overpaid?

Without those numbers these numbers don't tell me much.

Dicaprio is a pretty good actor

I don't know how they'd correct it but the list catches a lot of people for various reasons.

Some do smaller stuff but still demand a bigger paycheck, like Dicaprio. It seems like the only time I ever hear his name any more is towards the end of the year when whatever Oscar prestige picture goes into limited release.

Some wear their welcome thin with audiences for reasons that may have as much to do with the actors themselves as much as the quality of the project, like Ferrell and Cruise.

Others can't say no to a project, like Jackson. I imagine if this list was done a while back Michael Caine would have been on the list for the same reason.

Jim Carrey's in there because he's stuck on a spin cycle of making a big hit every so often that then gives him enough momentum to make three bombs.

DiCaprio's return on investment transcends money.

That's retarded. Some movies are destined to suck no matter who is the lead. Same goes for awesome movies. Ferrell could have been Neo and the matrix still would have rocked.

It ain't the actor's fault.

If Keanu gets paid at all, he should be #1.

I don't recall George Clooney movies making much money, but he's still a HUGE MOVE STAR according to the media. Maybe he works real cheap and that way his salary/film earning ratio is really good.

Land of the Lost was fucking hilarious, but Will Ferrell wasn't half as funny as Danny McBride was in that movie. The whole movie he was pretty much telling Ferrell, "You're fuckin' out!"
