No shit.

I wouldn't by no means call myself the smartest, but sometimes I think everyone else just doesn't have a clue. Most educated? Maybe, but not formally. I'm an autodidact. Not a day of college. The only formal classes I have after High School are several required manufacturer equipment classes as a technician for work. I feel I know far more than the average person, but that doesn't mean I know the most either.

The name that came to though was Extra Stout when I saw the thread title. Him and I usually disagree, but he has well thought out answers on topics and is obviously well informed.

Learned knowledge, aka book smarts, is no indicator of intelligence or ability

How many people on this earth were born to troubled families, never really had the chance to be nurtured or have a supportive childhood, which in turn led them to begin working at an early age, etc.

It's mostly about circumstances. There are many people with high ability, but never got around, or got the chance to, edify themselves.

I'm much more interested in wisdom.

I don't think a 1390 is high by today's standards...I don't really know what areas they had back then or how many sections of the test there were but I know nowadays it goes up to 2400, so a 1390 is around average or slightly below.

the scale is still out of 1600 (verbal + math) but there is an extra essay worth 800 that colleges dont even look at.

when i applied to UT, it listed my SAT as out of 1600 (verbal + math) and completely negated the essay, so its still pratically the same format.

btw the standardized tests dont mean shit. you can score 70 percentile on the ACT and turn around and score 90 percentile on the SAT. one test calls you a dumbass and the other one a genius.

In terms of the SAT, don't forget that when the test was taken matters as well - they recalculated and redesigned the test in 1995, so scores are weighted differently pre-1995 and post-1995. And of course, again post-whenever they introduced the third section. When they introduced the new writing portion, they also reconfigured the verbal section, and removed all the analogies, previously considered one of the more difficult portions of the test.

Degrees can mean something or nothing. I know they often take a lot of hard work to achieve, and I also know that many people with advanced degrees aren't that common-sense smart (I work around a lot of these folks). Likewise, knowing a lot of trivia could mean something, or nothing.

My IQ ranks in the genius level according to the standard scale (150+), and I forgot to pay my car insurance bill this month until I got a reminder that it was post-due. Go figure. I read a lot, but there is a ton of stuff I don't know much about and most math beyond algebra, geometry and trigonometry is totally over my head. I can write pretty well, but I frequently can't think of simple words in regular conversation (SFIE often has to interpret 'that' and hand gestures to figure out what I'm talking about).

It's all pretty relative.

Someone who doesn't get nearly enough credit is Darkreign. He's probably one of the most open minded persons on the board who understands many things quickly and is able to view things from many viewpoints.

To me intelligence has nothing to do with being able to repeat a bunch of information but rather how well you process and understand the information you're presented with. DR doesn't always have the facts straight but he's willing to listen and does a good job incorporating what he learns.

I've noticed that. I think I speak English pretty well for a foreigner. It's not my native language and I speak 5 languages. I have also never lived in an English speaking country. First, how many Americans speak more than one language? Second, I was amazed at how many Americans can't even speak their native language in a proper way. Sometimes I think I seem to do better.

And yet, when foreigners say something, they will get bashed by Americans like; "You stupid foreign dumbass...". But, these ' foreigner dumbasses' speak your own language better than you do :lmao is the first thing which comes to my mind, when someone is saying that.

SATs don't mean shit. I don't know how anyone's supposed to reasonably believe you can judge a person's intelligence by how well they did answering a bunch of small and simple problems. On top of that, you can seriously improve your SAT score massively just by studying the format of the test. I went and bought an SAT book with practice exams, and it added 200 points or so to my actual score after a month of study versus what I had when I took the first practice exam. If you don't take a class or buy a book teaching the format, then you're at a huge competitive disadvantage taking the exam.

Hmmm...off the top of my head I'd say it(excluding myself of course) comes down to Spurminator, Shoogar, Bruno or Slomo.

I think I'll go with Slomo.

Spurmnator loses points for actually posting in the political forum and attempting serious discusisons. Although he doesn't post in there very often. Ya still can't be a genius if you do that.

Shoogar loses points for being too much of an AJ fan and not enough of a Drob fan. Clearly something is wrong with that picture.

Bruno pretty much owns everyone who argues with him, has figured out how to win arguments convincingly at ST inspite of the culture gap, really quickly, against people that are impossible to win arguments against, and he's like a master of the salary cap as well.

However, I owned Bruno severely in a Lance Armstrong drug argument when he first arrived at this board, I think it's his only black mark.

That leaves Slomo...Slomo is very funny, again inspite of the culture gap he is one of the funniest posters and seems to be exceptionally skilled at multiple things like graphics and running message boards, and I remember one time he translated some article that no even had a clue what language it was(wasn't slovenian either). He also pretty much makes a fool out of anyone that he gets into an argument with, which isn't very often.

I go with Slomo, with the subtractions from the others being:

1. Doesn't post in the political forum.
2. Wasn't an AJ fan.
3. I've never beaten him in an argument(I've never even argued with him actually, then again I don't think I've ever really argued with Shoogar or Spurminator either).

He also gets points for staying in a big way, after the Slovenians left the team.

Spurminator still insists that Van Hagar is superior to Van Halen, though.

Whottt seems pretty quick. Chumpdumper constantly shits on people. I've also noticed that Shoog can analyze situations from angles that most people wouldn't ever take into account.

Underrated: spurs_fan_in_exile

non spurs fan: Findog

SFIE is ridiculously smart, and doesn't give or get enough credit for it. He's also disgustingly good with a sickening variety of trivia facts. He's great at Jeopardy and one of the reasons I married him was to make certain that I would never have to be on an opposite team from him in Trivial Pursuit again.

I have book-smarts, 99th percentile standardized test scores, and degrees, but I have little real-life smarts. I think I do well at explaining information to others in a manner in which they can understand it, and that signifies that I truly comprehend it. On the other hand, the world frustrates me. Given the choice, I would rather sit under a tree and read a book.

Want to explain to me why you love Rasho so much?

:lol Kidding.

Also, Jamstone gets serious props for completely dismantling gino's bald spot in this post:

Damn that is bad :td

What is up with thee Spurminator?

I don't even think Van Hagar was the second best part of Sammy Hagar's career much less the best version of Van Halen. Runnin' with the Devil alone surpasses the entire Van Hagar output.

Lee Majors is an honorable mention btw, so are AHF, thispego and baselinebum and Nbandan(who I don't believe posts in the political forum seriously) and quite a few others.

He always quits when him and I discuss Global Warming. He cannot back up his beliefs.

No, I have debated it with you but you refuse to accept my evidence, and I don't agree with a lot of yours, or at least the way you interpret it. I just don't see the point in wasting time on debating the topic with you. I present the scientific orthodoxy, you present a bunch of cherry picking and spurious data, and neither of us is going to change our minds, so what's the point? Typing so much gives me a sore shoulder, and I can do without the pain. BTW, I respect your intelligence, I just think you've got this particular issue dead wrong.

As for how smart I am, I'm no genius. IQ in the mid 130s when last tested, probably around 125 by now with all the damage I've done to it! :lol

I'm surrounded by people who are smarter than I am in pure IQ terms (my best friends in the world all have genius level IQs), but who cares? I know my strengths, and they are that I'm a quick learner at most things, and I have an acute ability to see the big picture and understand systemics (honed by training as an ecologist). In terms of the most beneficial things I've done in my life, driving a cab for 6 years was perfect for me - turned me from a bookish idealist into a real-world cynic.

Anyway, IQ is only one part of the picture:

As for smart people around here, there are plenty, but they are usually secure in their intelligence and don't need to throw it around, SFIE as the perfect example.

I'll have to find the thread but I believe Mr. Majors is misrepresenting my position on Van Hagar from years ago. I believe what I said was that Van Halen's music in the Hagar years (a) is underappreciated, and (b) at times had more depth and range. The Hagar years were superior lyrically and I think that group was able to better pull off the mid-tempo songs and the ballads.

Anyway, my position now is that if you're locking me up for the rest of my life and I can only take one or the other, I'm taking the DLR albums. The guitar work is better, the albums are more consistently good all the way through and the style is just more fun overall.

Spurminator is one of the best posters on the site, despite this fondness for Van Hagar. Also one of the best avatars.

Sperminator isn't even in the top 10....Baseline at #1 and FWDT at #2, Scott at #3...then it gets murky because its hard to judge a person's intelligence when all they write about is the Spurs or the NBA...
