Terre Haute, IN - The Oklahoma State men's cross country team has come away with the 2009 national championship.

The Cowboys came into the meet ranked second in the country behind Stanford, but claimed the title with 127 points. Oregon finished second with 143 points.

Oklahoma State's top finisher was Ryan Vail, who finished eighth with a time of 29:40.7. Teammate Colby Lowe was right behind in ninth at 29:42.4.

Other Oklahoma State runners included John Kosgei in 13th (29:48.3), Girma Mecheso in 28th (30:13.9), German Fernandez in 97th (30:53.9), David Chirchir in 103rd (30:59.6) and Johnathan Stublaski in 156th (31:25.2).

Other top Oklahoma runners included Tulsa's John Beattie in 46th, Oral Roberts' Jonah Lagat in 55th and Kevin Schwab of OU in 62nd.

Liberty had the top finisher in Sam Chelanga, who broke the course record by 22 seconds.

It's the first cross country championship for Oklahoma State since 1954 and gives the school its 49th overall championship -- the most in the Big 12.

OSU won its fifth consecutive NCAA Midwest Region championship on November 14th in Springfield, Missouri and repeated as Big 12 Champions in Columbia, Missouri on October 31st.

Impressive.

Although I bet most Okie State fans would still turn in all 44 of those wrestling/golf national titles for just one football title.

I'd trade any of your titles in golf/wrestling for a title in football for Tech.

Ends up the one in front with the funky ear rings, German Fernandez, who recently won the 2009 NCAA Men's 1500 Meter Championship, set a junior indoor world record for the mile running 3:55.02, and is one of three finalists for The Bowerman Award given to the best amatur runner, broke his ankle about half way thru and still finished 97th.

Ouch. And OSU still won the team title with him being injured.
