From this mornings NWS forecast discussion...

BOTH THE 00Z GFS AND ECMWF SOLUTIONS BRING A 550-555DAM 500MB LOW
INTO WEST TEXAS ON TUESDAY AND ACROSS OUR AREA TUESDAY NIGHT. THE
ECMWF IS A TAD SLOWER AND DEEPER WITH THE LOW...WHICH WOULD BE
MORE SNOW FAVORABLE...AND FOR A GREATER PORTION OF OUR AREA.
FORECAST SOUNDINGS FROM THE 00Z GFS40 SHOW A CLASSIC "SNOW
SOUNDING" FOR POINTS IN THE NORTHERN HILL COUNTRY AND EDWARDS
PLATEAU LATE TUESDAY NIGHT AS THE UPPER LOW MOVES OVERHEAD. THE
THEME HERE IS INCREASING CONFIDENCE IN OUR FORECAST OF FROZEN
PRECIP TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY FOR PORTIONS OF OUR AREA.

Doubtful, although sleet wouldn't be out of the question. It takes just the right conditions for actual snow here, and those conditions usually happen in Jan or Feb.

I've lived here 25+ years, and it's snowed on three days, and two of those three were in 1985, so don't get your hopes up. All three of those days were also in Jan or Feb. We get crappy winter weather sometimes, but it's usually sleety shit or frozen rain as a precursor to an ice storm.

But then again, people can barely drive right when it rains here, all hell will break loose if it snows.

Last winter, everyone freaked out [it seems] as if they never saw snow before. I guess they got so used to global warming, they forgot what snow was. This year, I expect it to be worse than last year, and I will really be pissed if the city libtards running the place aren't ready like last year for it. How hard is it to stick fine crushed grave, street deicer, and to keep the vehicles serviceable? Last years snow should have been plowed, deiced, streets graveled etc. to make it only a 2 day hardship on drivers. Because of lack of preparedness, in an area that historically has such weather, we had weeks of troubling commutes.

I would like to think they learned from last year, but we are talking about the liberals who run Portland...

I'm looking at the GFS temp plots and basically I doubt it gets cold enough Friday morning for San Antonio, but Friday night if there is enough moisture around then we might see something.

THE SHORT-WAVE WILL ROTATE AROUND THE BASE OF THE

EXPECT PRECIPITATION TO DEVELOP AFTER MIDNIGHT THURSDAY NIGHT,

EVENING. DUE TO ONGOING COLD ADVECTION (http://forecast.weather.gov/glossary.php?word=ADVECTION), FORECAST SOUNDINGS SHOW A
MIX OF RAIN/SNOW EARLY, THEN ALL SNOW AS THE EVENT DEVELOPS.
CONFIDENCE IS BUILDING THAT THERE WILL BE SOME SNOW ACCUMULATION
ACROSS THE HILL COUNTRY AND PARTS OF SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS DUE TO
DEVELOPING CONSENSUS AMONG THE MODELS AND ENSEMBLES (http://forecast.weather.gov/glossary.php?word=ENSEMBLES). FOR NOW, WILL
GO WITH UP TO 2 INCHES. HOWEVER, SOME MODELS/ENSEMBLES (http://forecast.weather.gov/glossary.php?word=ENSEMBLES) ARE SHOWING
UP TO 4 INCHES AND HPC (http://forecast.weather.gov/glossary.php?word=HPC) IS INDICATING A SLIGHT RISK (http://forecast.weather.gov/glossary.php?word=SLIGHT%20RISK) OF GREATER THAN
4 INCHES ACROSS THE EASTERN HILL COUNTRY TO NEAR THE AUSTIN AREA.
LATER FORECASTS MAY HAVE TO INCREASE THE SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ANDWow!!! Thats from the discussion this morning. Soundings are the temperature profiles of the atmosphere. We get ice because a lot of the time there is cold air at the suface but overrunning warm air. There is cold air all the way up so anything that falls will start as snow and either melt on the way down or stay as snow until it hits the ground. It doesn't take much moisture at all to make a few inches of snow (1 inch of rain can make about a foot of snow if I remember correctly) so any moisture we get can make this happen.

Get ready for some of the white stuff — followed by a blast of chilly Canadian air.

Up to an inch of snow is expected to fall on San Antonio on Friday.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday predicted that an upper-level disturbance will begin moving across the Hill Country and South Central Texas tonight. Snow is expected to begin Friday morning, followed by an unusually early hard freeze, in the mid-20s, by Saturday morning.

Officials with the city, the Texas Department of Transportation and area school districts are bracing for the wintry weather. Decisions about schedule changes and closures are pending, based on an evolving forecast.

“A rather vigorous weather system is coming at us from the north, bringing some pretty cool, almost cold Canadian temperatures and weather,” NWS forecaster Joe Baskin said. “There's a lot that can change between now and then.”

The weather service predicts that Bexar County has a 60 percent to 70 percent chance of receiving a half-inch to an inch of snowfall Friday.

The record for earliest measurable snowfall is Nov. 23, 1957, when 0.3 inches fell, according to the weather service.

In the past, trace amounts of snow have been detected as early as Nov. 8.

Light flurries might begin during Friday's morning commute and accumulate through the evening. Most of the snow was expected to fall between noon and 6 p.m.

In the San Antonio area, temperatures are expected to peak at 38 degrees before 7 a.m. Friday, drop to the low 30s by the evening and hit freezing or below by midnight.

Baskin said ground temperatures would initially be warm enough to melt any snow. The weather service expects only limited ice in the form of sleet or freezing rain.

“Even though the snowfall is a significant thing, it's not going to be nearly as significant as the cold temperatures on Saturday morning,” Baskin said. He said temperatures will drop to about 25 degrees between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Saturday, making the season's first freeze an unusually hard one.

“We don't generally get a hard freeze as our initial freeze,” Baskin said. “Usually, we don't get the hard freezes until the end of January.”

Baskin recommended that residents bring in their pets and cover or move plants indoors. They also should prepare their pipes for cold weather or allow water to drip from outdoor faucets.

City and TxDOT officials said they are prepared to spray a liquid de-icing chemical on roads, especially ramps and bridges, if ice is predicted. TxDOT spokeswoman Laura Lopez said sand and crushed rock also could be used in worst-case scenarios to keep roadways from becoming slick.

The de-icing chemical that would be used, magnesium chloride, is the same one used to prevent slick roads last December, Lopez said. Nearly 400 accidents occurred after the de-icer was used, but Lopez said there is nothing wrong with the chemical.

“What happened last year is we were expecting temperatures to drop below 32 with precipitation,” she said. “The temperatures did not drop, and there was no precipitation. It was a judgment call because if we didn't put anything down, ice would have formed and there would have been accidents.”

School districts also will keep an eye on the weather and likely would make decisions on delays or cancellations early Friday, officials said. And while students might be longing for a snow day, Pascual Gonzalez, spokesman for Northside Independent School District, said that if school is canceled, the day will have to be made up later.

the area of snowfall looks like its breaking up as it moves east. Air is pretty dry out there so there's not much to squeeze out. Should be in SA before in 3-4 hours if it holds together but man the radar looks weak.

Its around the Junction area right now.

On the other hand towards the coast looks like there's a good amount of moisture and as the air gets colder it should start to turn from rain to snow later today.

If it doesn't snow I am going to cry.

it's funny how different people react to snow because of where they live. People who aren't used to it want it to snow, yet they normally live in that region where it doesn't because it doesn't snow regularly there. Like they wouldn't move North so they could see snow. Conversely, the people who normally choose to live in the areas where it snows hate snow. Like I hate snow, but I don't think I would ever move somewhere where it doesn't snow because I like all the seasons. Yet if it snows here today I'm pissed off. Like my girlfriend in college grew up in Miami and loved it when it snowed here and couldn't get enough of it. She moved to California a couple years ago because "It doesn't snow there"

No snow here in MI, either. It's actually pretty disappointing.

I cut my grass this week. I don't remember ever having to cut my grass later than Halloween.

it was like 65 degree here a couple weeks ago. I think it was 60 last weekend

That snow band coming in from the west just look weaker and weaker with each new frame from the radar. They just switched the New Braunfels radar to snow mode and its showing something just south of SA in Atascosa county though and that seems to be spreading up into South San Antonio (near the Police Academy - Palo Alto area) but who knows if thats really falling and hitting the ground.

Blowing snow coupled with negative wind chills? Yeah, that sucks.

People who drive normally, 65-70 on the freeway while on their cell, when it's snowing? Yeah, they suck, too.

Imagine taking off from San Antonio where it was 60 degrees last January, flying to Denver where it was 70 degrees - then boarding another plane to Michigan where it was -10 degrees. I lost 80 fucking degrees in 2 1/2 hours. It was brutal.

Still melting on the ground, but they are saying on the weather that it will likely stick and to expect 1-3 inches in the city.

Crazy, no? I walked through the falling snow to get to my office. I wish they'd shut us down, but apparently not. A lot of schools are closing early; the worst is supposed to be here around noon.

Yup, I spent the summer interning at the Yellowstone Research Library, so bison jams were pretty frequent. It took FOREVER for me to see a freaking moose out there, and I was in the UP in late October and didn't see any moose up there either. Apparently I am moose repellent.

Snow falling right now north of Del Rio and just west of Junction. Band is moving south east at a decent clip. If this makes it to SA then most of you will be happy.

I know SA will NOT see any freezing rain today. Its going to be either snow or bust. I think the coastal areas had rain earlier and they might still have rain but its not going to freeze. Its too warm at the ground that rain is starting off as snow but melting as it comes down into warmer air. There is no warm air aloft to cause freezing rain.

Right? Without moving to a window view, I can't tell, but I think it's still too warm to be anything but wet roads and I can drive safely enough.
