yesterday was an interesting day for me... my buddy from LA showed up on my doorstep out of the blue. he is in town because his father bought him a car here and this weekend he will be driving back to LA. i am most likely going back with him and chillin' out there for a couple of weeks. here's the kicker though, i might stay permanently. i have yet to decide if i am going to stay out there, find a job and make cali home. such a big decision, huge step in my life.

i'm excited and anxious at the same time. i've always wanted to move to the west coast and the last time i visited LA i didn't want to come back to SA. i just don't know how i'm going to make it out there unless i find a decent job which is hard enough to find here in SA.

oh well, at least if all else fails i will have a killer vacation.

The idea sounds exciting but the reality is that you're not going to find a job out there.

Basically. It sounds like a great idea if you can find a job. Unfortunately, in this economy that can be a big if. But if you do find one... Welcome :toast

Good luck man.

I'm in Orange County and I love it here. If you can live in/near a beach city it's much nicer than LA.

True. I have a friend with a Ph.D in EE whose company made a stupid investment and went under more than a year and a half ago who is still out of work.

SoCal is awesome once you get a few miles outside of LA. I don't like the city itself, but there is just so much to do around it. The surrounding areas are spectacular.

If you stay, expect to pay at least 2.5-3x as much for rent and some mad state taxes (state income tax is a flat 9.5% or so unless you're either really poor or pulling 6 figures). Gas is significantly more expensive and food is a lot more too. Not to disparage Cali; it is an absolutely incredible place to live, but you pay a price for it too. If you like doing a lot of stuff outdoors, it's probably worth it though.

Any spot out there is all hispanic. Lynwood, South Gate, Santa Fe Springs. You don't start seeing black people till you head further south to Watts and Compton.

Fuck just finding a job, finding one good enough to have a decent quality of life. I make over 100k per year and found it tough out there.

It's a beautiful state, lots to do but it's best days are gone, its been run into the ground no signs of life any time soon.

I lived in SoCal for two years and left at the beginning of the housing bubble.

I wouldn't live in CA for anything. They are totally screwed up:

a special line of cars are made just for CA (more expensive)
special motorcycles too.
I enjoy shooting and collecting guns. No can do in CA.
state is broke.
stupid vehicle regs.
earthquakes. I lived there from 1970-73 so I've been thru some MAJOR ones.
Schwarzenegger.
Miss California.
pollution
gangs
airheads
dozens more stupid laws that I've read about but forgotten.

I lived in San Diego in the late 60s, and then moved to Virginia, then moved back to CA from 1970-73 (went to middle school in Oxnard). Yeah, I'm old.

It was fun back then when I was a kid, but I'd never go there as an adult to live.

The pollution is nowhere near what it was in the 70s. Even from the late 90s to this decade, LA seems to have made huge strides cleaning its air up. There's still too many cars and it's still surrounded by mountains, so there can be bad days, but it's not like it was at it worst in the 70s and 80s.
