AI was able to sign with the Sixers because he negotiated a buyout with the Grizzlies and was waived. He did not retire and then choose a new team.

There are already rules to prevent a player from retiring and then unretiring to sign with a new team. A player on an active contract who retires is restricted from "unretiring" for one year after retirement. He can apply for early reinstatement, but all 30 teams must approve. This happened to Jason Williams last year. He signed with the Clippers over the summer and then retired before the season started. He applied for reinstatement in Feb 2009, presumably to sign with a contender, but six teams voted against his application.

Thats how I understood it as well, I've heard quite a few announcers including Sean amd Bill making comments about him retiring to get off the grizzlies. But thats just not the case, they bought him out then he announced he was retiring. Which was obviously bogus.
