well, Blair couldn't possible do more...wow.

Spurs are losing this one at the FT line, pure and simple.

it doesn't help that htey can't make a 3 pointer either, but those are always inconsistent and a gamble. Spurs need to be forced to shoot FT drills for the next three days straight. MAYBE they deserve food and water breaks. if they make them.

Well, to look at the bright side: we didn't play well at all, but we were in the game until the end.

Might not hurt to practice some free-throws, though.

Seriously... look at it that way... most of the team was pretty terrible tonight and we were right there... we'll keep chipping away and we'll be right there at the end.

The only thing I can take from the Spurs pissing this game away was the play of Blair and the bench. That was what kept us in the game, that was what closed the leads, and that was what showed any fire and energy. RJ was decent on defense or Pierce was just off tonight, but was otherwise a non-factor.
The turnovers were disgusting, but 1/2 of those were from cuts to the direction opposite the pass. That should clean up as the year goes by.
Given that the Celtics have a lot better chemistry and confidence in each other, I thought the Spurs hung in there pretty well.
Final verdict: Ugly offensive game, decent defensive game. Correctable and encouraging.

Spurs finished strong though. Make a few freethrows & turn the ball over less (don't step out of bounds on a 3) & we might have a different outcome. We played like a team thats been off for 4 days. Celtics win 6th straight, beat Spurs 90-83 (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/recap?gid=2009120324&prov=ap)
By Paul J. Weber

Kevin Garnett paid no mind to the Boston Celtics winning their sixth straight game Thursday night, claiming he’s not even conscious of the streak.

But the Celtics are on a roll, right?

“We’ve got a little rhythm,” Garnett said.

Garnett scored 20 points and the Celtics improved to an NBA-best 8-1 away from home, beating the San Antonio Spurs 90-83. They’ll wrap up a four-game road swing Friday at Oklahoma City, when the Celtics will go for a season-best seventh consecutive win.

“That’s the make or break of the trip,” Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace said. “It’ll be a downer if we don’t go in there tomorrow and come out with a W.”

San Antonio also had won five in a row, but the Celtics came away with what Spurs coach Gregg Popovich acknowledged was a bit of a litmus test. Of the nine teams San Antonio has beaten this season, only four had winning records entering Thursday.

Rookie DeJuan Blair had a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who will get another test against a division leader Saturday against Denver.

The Spurs committed 18 turnovers, shot a season-worst 7 of 17 from the free-throw line and made just 2 of their 16 attempts from behind the 3-point line.

“It’s one of those bad games,” Spurs guard Tony Parker said.

Boston matched its longest winning streak of the season, when the Celtics started 6-0. Only the Los Angeles Lakers, who’ve won seven straight, have a longer streak going.

Rajon Rondo had 12 points and 12 assists, and the point guard came up big for the Celtics down the stretch. Rondo’s jumper with 2 minutes left pushed the lead to 87-81, and he later stripped Tony Parker during a layup attempt that would have cut Boston’s lead to one possession.

Ray Allen had 15 points for Boston, which never trailed after seizing the lead in the first minutes of the game.

“Guys are locked in, it’s a great focus right now,” Celtics center Kendrick Perkins said. “Guys came on this road trip to get wins.”

Tim Duncan had 16 points and 15 rebounds, and teaming with Blair, the Spurs dominated the Celtics on the boards 55-32. Blair was 9 of 11 from the field, but his boundless energy under the rim also inadvertently gave the Celtics a basket.

After Brian Scalabrine missed a 3-pointer in the first quarter, Blair bounced up for the rebound—then promptly shot the ball into his own basket.

“That sums it up right there,” Spurs guard George Hill said. “Things weren’t going our way tonight.”

Asked in the locker room about the bucket he scored for Boston, Blair went silent for several seconds. Then he broke into a smile and said, “I tried to grab it with one hand but I should have grabbed it with two. That’s never happened to me before.”

It was one of a perhaps a couple costly gaffes for the Spurs. Michael Finley hit a corner 3-pointer with 12.9 seconds left that might have kept the Spurs alive, but he fired with his foot out of bounds.

Popovich confessed before the game that the Celtics presented an early benchmark for the Spurs, who have started to come around after a sluggish 4-6 start. San Antonio pulled together a five-game win streak while playing just two teams, Houston and Milwaukee, with winning records.

Parker finished with 17 points and seven assists, and Manu Ginobili had 11 points.

NOTES: Celtics F Glen Davis had the cast and pins removed from his broken right hand Thursday, but he’ll be fitted for another to wear about two more weeks. Davis has not played yet this season. … The Spurs had a season-high 20 offensive rebounds.

we had a shot at it at the end, dejuan blair was the beast. as usual, pop makes what's suppose to be a genius decision to sit out manu ginobili for the last 6 minutes for the sake of "preventing injury" but it's ok to play him 20 minutes for the game and practice him 2 hours a day but the final 5 minutes is a big no no. pop can be really stupid sometimes

Tonight was an example of a team that can stop both TD and TP... or at least considerably reduce their production... other than Blair, we still haven't solved the riddle from last season. Dice barely played, RJ missed a bunch of shots, but most importantly, Pop went back to trust what did not work last season: Mason and Bonner...
The good news is that our defense improved. And even when none of our big 3 had a really good night, we managed to stay in the game to the end.

Can we depend on the beast 4 out of 7 games?

bigbendbruisebrother
12-04-2009, 09:29 AM
That was good game.

Three "ifs" stand out to me:

1. Obviously the turnovers (but that's going to happen with a bunch of new guys playing a seasoned defensive squad like Boston)

2. The free-throw shooting was horrific. We lost by seven and missed 10 free throws.

3. No one except Manu could hit a three (without a foot out of bounds). I'd like to give Boston a lot of credit for perimeter defense, but most of the looks were decent. We had an off night from beyond the arc.

The amazing thing to me is that this game was close from beginning to end, and that was because our team defense was much improved, our rebounding on both ends kicked ass, and our guys hustled and worked.

So, all you blamers, chill the fuck out. This was a good loss. It showed exactly where we stacked up, and the fact is, we're not the best team in the league or even in our division yet. We're not that far off though. Once the guys fully learn the system, the turnovers will drop. The threes will fall again. The free throw shooting was bad and needs to improve. These things are going to take time, and having a bunch of cliff diving fans after every loss won't help.

bigbendbruisebrother
12-04-2009, 09:31 AM
And one more thing. I keep seeing blame thrown at Tony for the turnovers. Look at the box score (http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=mysa&page=nba/scores/final/boxscore.aspx?GAMEID=11610).

Gant
12-04-2009, 10:22 AM
That was an unusual game. The Spurs obliterated Boston on the boards by 23 but still lost- very strange. Missed free throws and turnovers hurt San Antonio.

Blair was outrageously effective and Duncan was Duncan, but most of the rest of the Spurs had off nights. Bonner did rebound well though (who didn't on the home team?).

Particularly telling was the always entertaining Rondo/Parker match-up, which went to Rondo based on the big plays at the end.

Pierce had one of his few invisible games this season. Manu matched him though. Garnett and Perkins maintained their run of offensive efficiency but just got clobbered in the rebounding column by Blair and Duncan.

The bottom line was about efficiency. San Antonio earned extra opportunities, but couldn't convert them. Boston made up the possession deficit through strong defense, and better passing and shooting.

Fun game. Good luck to the Spurs!

The spurs are constantly making mental mistakes in big games. They have won very few big games over the last year. Whether, its defensive rebounding, turnovers, poor shot selection down the stretch, pathetic free throw shooting, or bad defense, the spurs find a way to lose the big game

Their isn't one go to guy down the stretch that I feel comfortable taking a shot in the final minutes of a game. NOT ONE!
