NEW YORK (Ticker) - Just over a month ago, Avery Johnson wasn't even an NBA coach. Now he is the Western Conference's Coach of the Month.

In his first full month as coach of the Dallas Mavericks, Johnson was honored Thursday by the league. Lawrence Frank of the New Jersey Nets received the Eastern Conference award.

Johnson replaced Don Nelson on March 19 and guided the Mavericks to a 16-2 mark as he instilled an improved defensive scheme. In April, Dallas went 10-1 - winning its last nine games - and held foes to 91.1 points on 42.8 percent shooting.

Dallas is 25-6 under Johnson, who also filled in for Nelson in three stints before replacing him on a permanent basis. "The Little General" began the season as an assistant.

Frank guided the Nets to an 8-2 mark in April, closing the season with four straight wins and securing the final playoff berth in the East.

Although led by stars Vince Carter and Jason Kidd, the Nets did it with defense, limiting opponents to 91.5 points and 43.3 percent shooting. Their point differential of 10.2 was second only to Dallas in April.

Other nominees were Denver's George Karl, Detroit's Larry Brown and Philadelphia's Jim O'Brien
