Mavs haven't been playing well lately and they always get raped by Nash. So you're not telling me something I don't already know.

I was hoping for something more along the lines of a stern admonition of my caca and an assurance of victory.:depressed

Yeah, it's a misnomer. It should be called "Steve Nash: Where Amazing Happens."

I can't talk shit. The Mavs are my 2nd favorite team in the league.

I hope it's a close game, concluded by a Steve Nash 3-pointer at the buzzer.

I'm tempted to get tix to the game. There's a deal on stubhub right now. After service charges, $10 apiece for the upper baseline. You interested mono?

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love,
To the dark and the empty skies.

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
And felt your heart beat close to mine
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love
That was there at my command.

And the first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy would fill the earth
And last till the end of time my love
It would last till the end of time my love

The first time ever I saw your face, your face,
your face, your face

http://mavsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/12/new-starter-tonight.html

Don't be surprised if there's a change at shooting guard tonight for the Mavericks against Phoenix. Coach Rick Carlisle (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Rick_Carlisle) experimented with starting Jason Terry (http://topics.dallasnews.com/topic/Jason_Terry) against Atlanta on Saturday and the Mavericks fell behind 9-2.
Terry was sixth man of the year last season and fills that role wonderfully.
So what will happen tonight? Expect J.J. Barea to get a good look early.
"For me, I'm just going to see if I can get myself going and get the team going a little with some energy at the beginning,'' Barea said after shootaround. "That's what I'm going to try to do tonight. And do my best on (Steve) Nash.''
Sounds like Barea's going to get the starting nod, although Carlisle never tips his hand until game time.
One thing for sure, the Mavericks need more punch early in the game.
"We didn't have the energy at the start (against Atlanta) and it went from there,'' Barea said. "So we'll hopefully get a better start tonight.''

So what does Carlisle do in crunch time? Pulls Josh Howard, puts in Barea, and gives Nash the green light to do some ass whupping.

If the Mavs had lost this game, "Fire Carlisle" would be the phrase of the night.

That's the discipline of playing the clock and not chickening out. It's really rare when you're able to do what Carlisle was able to do. Richardson made it possible by burning that TO needlessly. He let Nash shoot, didn't get anywhere near him because Nash couldn't hurt him unless he was fouled.

You get anywhere near Nash on those shots and it'll be at least three FT, or, a 4 point play. It wasn't the Suns. It was that Richardson TO which put the clock into play. Coach recognized it immediately. That's coaching!

They've lost 4 of 5, pretty soon they'll return to being the borderline playoff team everyone thought they were (and if everyone thought the Suns somehow had it tough in November with road games against bad teams, idk why you think the home games they have against good teams this month will be so much easier).

They lost by 1 point to a 15-7 team on the road.

With the matchup advantages they have over Dallas, it was a very winnable game. There were a lot of things about the game that bother me looking at the box score:

JJ Barea shouldn't be putting up 14 points on 75% shooting. That ties a season high for him. Home or road it's inexcusable.
Everyone loves Grant Hill cause he's a nice guy and stayed with the Suns, but his defense and boxing out in particular has been terrible this year.
Earl Clark, the one player on the Suns with the combination of length and athleticism that you need to guard Dirk, didn't touch the court. That makes no sense (actually it does given the night Dirk had). Whether or not he's a rookie, it's time to make a fuckin adjustment when no one else on the team can guard him.
Nash and Amare combine for 9 turnovers. What's new.
Amare StandandAdmire was doing too much standing and admiring when he shoulda been boxing out and grabbing more than 5 rebounds.
Lastly, J-Rich had a good night, but he needed a better night given who was guarding him.

That's the only thing he can do, score. That's why Carlisle keeps playing him, despite all the other things he does poorly. He hurt the Mavs getting lost on screens at the end, and also with his patented overdribbling into traffic and turnovers. Nash's last 3-ball came with him starting at the right wing "guarded" by JJB. He got free way, way, way too easily when JJB couldn't get around the screen and there was nobody within 5 feet of him when he let it rip. Why wasn't J-Ho on the court to defend Nash?

Earl Clark would've had his lunch eaten by Dirk. The problem is that it's not easy to double Dirk anymore. If you come off Kidd spotting up on the wings, he will make you pay. That's what happened on Kidd's last FG with 28 seconds left. Richardson came down to help on Dirk and Dirk quickly flicked it to Kidd for the basket.

Don't think you can put last night's loss on Nash. Didn't seem like a particularly poor game for Amare either.

Whaddaya know? JJB had the second-highest +/- on the team last night at +6, just behind Humphries +8. Of course Humphries was in the game late in the 3rd when the Mavs pulled ahead behind the Dirk and Josh show, so his +/- is a little misleading.

I understand that. I'm saying there's no excuse for letting him score more than every other team did.

There's a good chance you're right and EC would have gotten shredded by Dirk, but Dirk was shredding everyone else, what harm would it do to stick Clark in for a few possessions and see how he does? He's 6'10" and has the quickness of a SG, the prototypical guy you want guarding Dirk.

Don't think you can put last night's loss on Nash. Didn't seem like a particularly poor game for Amare either.

There's no particular person to put this loss on (except for maybe Hill but since he's a nice guy and likes to have fun it's ok). I'm simply saying those two combining for 9 turnovers contributes to losses and there's no excuse for it to be a re-occurring theme. I understand the bad rebounding given PHX's lack of size, but the huge turnover nights are inexcusable.

What else is new? That's his standard MO.

5 RPG isn't his standard MO, but regardless, a player who won't shut up about how much better his defense and rebounding got over the summer needs to prove it.

Terry guarded him when they were both in the game together. I think I saw Kidd matched up on him. If he's out on the perimeter and doesn't drive, Kidd can guard him. If he tries to post up Kidd, Kidd is too strong to get knocked out of position.

He should be able to post Terry up no problem, him posting up Ray Allen was the key to the Suns beating Boston in Boston earlier this year. Oh, and if Kidd is guarding him, why can't he drive? You just proved my point, he can either drive against Kidd or post up against the Jet, either way it's a mismatch.

Suns come up short at Dallas
by Paul Coro - Dec. 8, 2009 | The Arizona Republic

DALLAS - The Suns and Mavericks were looking for a remedy to their offenses, limping into Tuesday night's game amid their worst scoring stretches of the season.

Both figured to oblige, considering the Western Conference rivals' history of classic shootouts since point guard Steve Nash left Dallas for Phoenix in 2004.

Neither found the cure, but Dallas got back Josh Howard from an ankle injury and has the Band-Aid for a lot of problems in the form of Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki scored 33 points, and Howard made a surprise return from injury to score 16 second-half points off the bench in the Mavericks' 102-101 victory at American Airlines Center.

Phoenix has lost four of its past five, shooting 44 percent during that span after leading the NBA at 50.7 percent.

The Suns played harder and were competitive, as the teams were within a basket of each other until the final minute of the third quarter. That's when Nash left, and the Suns effectively lost the game in the next four minutes without him. Dallas went on an 11-2 run after Nash exited.

The Suns did not have a chance to tie the score until a flurry of 12 points on four consecutive possessions down the stretch provided hope. Out of timeouts with 2.4 seconds to go, Dallas' Jason Terry intentionally missed a second free throw and Amar'e Stoudemire had to heave a desperation shot from the Mavericks' end that fell short.

With 1:16 to go, Stoudemire's 3-point play started a run that was followed by three 3-pointers by Nash and Jason Richardson. It was the best the offense looked all game, as the Suns' woes continued without injured guard Leandro Barbosa and with center Channing Frye struggling.

"We don't have rhythm to our game," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said. "We've got to get back to the rhythm of running screen-and-roll. If it's not there, we've got to be able to move the ball, move people and keep the game going. We have to have a tempo and rhythm to the way we play. If they're going to switch, we have to be able to punish them inside. We don't get that done."

The Suns last led the game midway through the third quarter (61-60), about the time that Dallas began to find its offensive rhythm. The Mavericks struggled with their shooting much of the game but made 15 of their final 26 shots.

"Poor performance," Nash said. "We tried. We just didn't have it. We couldn't find it. It should have been a game that we score 110 points easy."

"We just didn't play up to our standard. I had a few too many turnovers (six). We missed a couple shots we normally make, and that's the difference between scoring 100 or 110. We've got to fight through it. We're a little tired, but we can't use that as an excuse. We've got to fight through it until we get some home cooking."

Phoenix summoned a better defensive effort that, early on, seemed to be plenty for its usual offensive output.

Dallas missed 23 of its first 32 shots, but the Suns led just 35-30 four minutes into the second quarter. Their inability to capitalize on Dallas' offensive struggles was the fault of their offense, particularly in the four-minute, second-half stretch without Nash. The Suns shot 1 for 7 and committed a turnover during that span.

"That's what happens when Steve comes out," forward Jared Dudley said. "You see the difference. There's no doubt about it. We have to do better when myself and the bench come in. We have to hold the fort and give them breathing time. I know he's Mr. Healthy, but everyone needs some rest."

Key player
Dirk Nowitzki's 33 points weren't a surprise, but Dallas got a bonus with Josh Howard scoring 20 (16 in the second half) in his first game back from an ankle injury.

Key moment
In the third quarter, the Suns stayed within one basket either way until Steve Nash left on a Dallas free throw that began an 11-2 Mavericks run.

Key number
44: The Suns' shooting percentage in the past five games. They led the NBA with 50.7 percent shooting before that.

View from press row
The Suns pondered a few Dallas lineup possibilities before the game with the sudden availabiltiy of Josh Howard, who had been out all but three games this season. Would Howard, Jason Terry or Rodrigue Beaubois start? Nope, just like the previous two games against the Suns, Dallas started Jose Juan Barea and enticed Phoenix to put Steve Nash on him. Barea averaged 14 points on 50 percent shooting in the previous two meetings and made six of eight shots Tuesday for 14 points and six assists. He had averaged 8.1 points and 3.0 assists this season.
