Nobel peace prize: Norwegians incensed over Barack Obama's snubs (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/dec/09/obama-nobel-peace-prize-snub)

So?

I think it's smart of Obama to minimize all the parading with the Nobel peace prize. Most Americans seem to feel (rightly) that it has deviated from its original principles and is just another elitist award.

What was the original purpose, if not to honor the "elite" in the fields of Peace, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, Literature, and Economics?

What specifically do you think will be the consequences of this perceived snub?

I agree it's a good move by President Obama to minimize the trip, but I would reconsider meeting with the King for lunch.

I think it's funny that he's making the Norwegians mad. But Obama didn't deserve the Peace Prize, so it's good he's getting out of there as quickly as possible instead of basking in the glow of adulation. He actually should be embarrassed about the whole fiasco.

So...Yoni is concerned about Obama pissing off the Norwegians? :lmao

Norwegians should have changed their form of government towards an expansionist theocracy or a communist dictatorship if they didn't want this to happen.

No offense ChumpDumper but the thread is not about the poster's intentions of making threads, but about the actual article. Some friends I was talking to - Obama supporters and detractors alike - agreed that drawing less attention is good, but that maybe he should go to lunch with the King to maintain good relations.

Obama seems to have a knack for putting our allies off balance. He did it with Britain and France, why not with Norway too?

And Poland and Israel and Germany and virtually every American ally. On the other hand he's very gentle towards Russia, Iran, China, etc.

Very weird. Leslie Gelb contends that is due to a disturbing amateurishness in managing America’s power. (http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-11-22/think-before-you-travel/2/) I used to believe that, but how amateurish can these guys be?

Anyway, it's has been delicious to see the disappointment and frustration of the European press and lefties (sorry for the redundancy) with this administration. The cover of a Portuguese diary today was hilarious.

So now board Republicans are upset that Obama is not going to bask in the adulation of Europeans.

Hilarious.

No doubts Yoni had a "damned if he does" thread warming up in the bullpen alongside this "damned that he didn't" one.

Disagree. Either would be easy enough to find on the internetz. No need for a bullpen at all.

Agreed. No matter who the President is at the time, he or she will be made fun of or criticized relentlessly. It's the trendy thing to do nowadays. Did it start with SNL?
