Paul Pierce would raise the rim, among other things (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie/post/Paul-Pierce-would-raise-the-rim-among-other-thi?urn=nba,209807)

By J.E. Skeets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/ball_dont_lie?author=J.E.+Skeets)

So, apparently Paul Pierce (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3253/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3253/news) has a knack for this ol' bloggin' thingamajig.

In his second post in as many days at Boston.com, the Celtics forward writes — or at least dictates to a Boston Globe reporter — what he'd do if he ran the NBA (http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/2009/12/paul_pierce_if.html?camp=localsearch:on:twit:celti cs).

Pierce's three fundamental changes for the league: Ditch the age limit ("if you're a pro, you're a pro"); shorten the season to 60 games (fat chance with advertisers); and raise the rim three inches.

(http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/2009/12/paul_pierce_if.html?camp=localsearch:on:twit:celti cs)The Truth (http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/extras/celtics_blog/2009/12/paul_pierce_if.html?camp=localsearch:on:twit:celti cs):
The athletes today are crazy. You see the way guys are jumping these days. I would raise the rim three inches. Then, you have to learn the art of the jump shot. You'll have to know how to play this game a little bit better then. Raising the rim, you'll see increasing play. You'll see increasing fundamentals. I'm telling you.
This idea is nothing new. For years, Tom Newell, son of legendary basketball big man coach Pete Newell, has suggested the NBA and NCAA play with 11-foot rims (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2003747066_elevenfoot14.html?syndication=rss). Like Pierce, Newell hypothesizes that higher rims would see an emphasis on spacing, passing and working for open shots. Basketball Fundamentals 101!

Personally, I don't see the NBA jacking those nets up anytime soon. In fact, to paraphrase The Mighty MJD (http://deadspin.com/269561/dunk-now-while-you-can-white-man), just try to imagine telling Commissioner David Stern, "Hey, boss, we have an idea that will decrease highlight dunks and three-point shots." I'd be amazed if you avoided that trap-floor door opening beneath your feet. Those sharks don't tickle.

But what do you think? Is Pierce onto something? Sound off.

You'd have to add 12 inches to stop Shannon Brown ridunkulousness

3 inches is nothing for a player who is very skilled on the offensive end. Players like TD, KB, and so on and so forth.

A stupid idea. I'm surprised Pop didn't think of it.

dumb idea. It would fuck everyone up.

Plus Pierce doesnt have the hops to knee someone in the nuts and still dunk the basketball if its 3" higher

Raise the rim enough and you'll have the WNBA.

I like the 60-game season idea - 82 is absurd. However, it won't happen.

And raising the rim 3" wouldn't change shit. You'd have to raise it 6-12" to make a difference. I wouldn't do it though.

I like this idea only if with the game shrinkage, the players salaries also shrink. My bet is though Pierce didn't think of this and he also wouldn't be for it.

82 games is too many IMO. The league needs to shorten the season to 62 games and spread out the games during the 6 months of the regular season.

i like the 60 games per season idea. i dont like game 7's on 1st and 2nd rounds in the playoffs it should be shorten to best out of 5.

and paul pierce is on crack with that idea of adding 3 more inches, i think he's just jealous because all these young cats are outjumping him.

I like the long season, extending it will just let old teams hang around longer. Lookin for a way to give Ginobili and Duncan some relief? :D

just because pierce can't dunk he has to ruin it for everyone else
