As you can see in the video below, early in Friday's Rockets-Mavericks game (before rules were misapplied (http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/12/19/mavericks-want-a-do-over-with-rockets-file-protest/)!) Houston's tough guy Landry stood in to take a charge on Dirk. Nowitzki tried to avoid contact to get the lefty scoop, but couldn't get clear Landry's chin with his own right elbow.

The result? It's grotesque. Take a look.

The best part, besides Dirk being understandably freaked out because he has another man's teeth embedded in his arm, is how Landry reacts. After the blow, he calmly stands, walks toward the Houston bench and motions that he needs to come out of the game. It's not surprising that Landry reacted in such a cavalier fashion to what ended up being a trip to the ER and a Saturday visit with an oral surgeon (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/bk/bkn/6778196.html), given that last season Landry got shot (by a gun, with a bullet) in the leg ... and played less than three weeks later.

DALLAS — Trevor Ariza was furious and did not care to hide how he felt, especially to Aaron Brooks.


Ariza screamed his way around the court and in Brooks’ face after Brooks lost the ball on the last Rockets possession of regulation. But Brooks had just the response the Rockets needed to snap the hex the Mavericks had held over them.

Just when the Mavericks found a new and more painful way to torment the Rockets, Brooks scored nine points in overtime, helping the Rockets to the response that let them pull away for a bizarre, emotionally charged 116-108 win Friday, with Dallas preparing a protest of what owner Mark Cuban called “multiple misapplications of the rules.”

“I didn’t want to let what happened at the end of the game affect the way I came out,” Brooks said. “For this team, it was great. We were on a lull going into overtime. The teams that have momentum normally win the overtime.”

Ariza said his reaction to Brooks’ turnover was “in the heat of the moment.”

“I was just trying to tell him the last play of the game, if he’s going to take it, he should probably pull up because going in there, you’re probably not going to get a foul or anything can happen,” Ariza said. “It’s nothing big. It was just something on the court. We both want to win. I’m just going to say what I have to say and that’ll be it.”

“We were all emotional,” Brooks said. “Nothing’s personal. Everybody wants to win. I don’t think about it. I have a short-term memory. When people get mad, sometimes my mind goes elsewhere. I think happy thoughts.”

He and Kyle Lowry, who had a career-high 26 points along with 10 assists, six rebounds, five steals and a blocked shot, gave the Rockets plenty of such thoughts for a change after a game against Dallas, combining for 13 of the Rockets’ 16 overtime points. But until the final seconds, the game was filled with feelings ranging from frightening to furious.

The Mavs’ Dirk Nowitzki and the Rockets’ Carl Landry were lost early in the second quarter when Landry cut off Nowitzki on a drive, catching Nowitzki’s right elbow in the mouth, dislodging or breaking parts of five of Landry’s teeth.

Landry was taken to the emergency room and will see an oral surgeon today to determine the extent of the damage. Nowitzki needed 30 minutes for pieces of Landry’s teeth to be removed from his elbow.

After they left, the Rockets answered the Dallas runs as they could not in the previous two meetings this season, won by the Mavericks by an average of 24.5 points after the Rockets had taken early leads. The Mavericks seemed to lose their poise, drawing six technical fouls, some at the worst possible times.

Midway through the fourth quarter, when Jason Kidd stopped Brooks with a hard foul, David Andersen confronted him, drawing double technical fouls and another on Dallas coach Rick Carlisle. Lowry hit the technical free throw and then sank a 3-pointer for a nine-point lead, and with three minutes remaining, the Rockets led by 10.
Mavs battle back


The Mavericks had another run in them. Brooks missed a 3 and one of two free throws with 19.1 seconds left, leaving Dallas within three. With 10.5 seconds left, the Mavs’ Tim Thomas waited as Chuck Hayes flew past, closing out to the 3-point line, then coolly tied the game.

Brooks then lost the ball, sending the game to overtime. The Rockets again pulled away, but not before there was one more odd exchange.
With the Rockets leading by six, Erick Dampier got loose under the rim, with Brooks grabbing Dampier for a flagrant foul with 1:01 left, and Dampier retaliating with an elbow that earned him a technical foul, his second, and an automatic ejection.

Brooks hit the technical free throw, giving the Rockets a 111-104 lead. Kris Humphries, whom the Rockets selected to shoot Dampier’s free throws, hit one free throw before the Rockets iced the win. They did it with Brooks losing the ball again, this time picking it up and passing out to Lowry, who hit his runner with 27.7 seconds left.

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki could miss Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers while the deep gash to his right elbow heals.

Nowitzki was hurt during a collision with Houston Rockets forward Carl Landry on Friday night. Landry broke five teeth in the collision, parts of two of which were imbedded in Nowitzki’s cut.

Nowitzki stayed home from the Mavericks’ practice Saturday because he’s taking pain killers to aid his recovery. The injury wasn’t serious enough for Nowitzki to need surgery.

The Mavericks are officially listing Nowitzki as questionable for Sunday’s game, and team officials are uncertain when he’ll return.

“We obviously are hoping for the best,” Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. “We don’t know what the timetable is going to be. We got to have other guys ready. We’ve had a lot of guys play well this year. I expect them to continue to do that in his absence.”

Nowitzki was injured when he drove into the lane and missed a short jumper with 9:28 left in the second quarter. Landry was hit in the mouth by Nowitzki’s right elbow and bit entirely through his mouthpiece during the impact. Mavericks swingman Josh Howard started in place of Nowitzki in the second half.

“It’s not a one-man team,” Mavs guard Jason Kidd said. “That’s the beauty of this team is we have so many guys that can put the ball in the basket. It’s a great opportunity for everybody to try to pick up the slack and pick up from what Dirk normally gives us.”

Landry received a root canal and two dental bridges Saturday. He missed the Rockets’ game against Oklahoma City.

Hello SINA Family!

It's been a painful 24 hours for yours truly. As many of you already know, I took a charge and broke three teeth in the game versus the Dallas Mavericks last night. I had to go to the emergency room in Dallas last night and spent the entire day in oral surgery back home in Houston. This is not the first time I have lost some teeth playing basketball...I certainly hope it is the last! During my rookie year, my good friend and PEAK ambassador, Dikembe Mutombo knocked out one of my front teeth in practice. That was the first time. Then, later in that season during playoffs, I lost the same tooth in a game versus the Utah Jazz. That was one of my most memorable games ever, so I will never forget it. We were on TNT and I came back in the game and made the game saving block on Darren Williams!!! I did the post game interview with a big gap in my mouth! Injuries are part of this game and luckily, my teeth are repairable. I'll just have a swollen and sore mouth for a few more days. Thanks to everyone for their well wishes! I really appreciate all of the kind words. I am fine, just sore and very tired!

To hear Nowitzki explain what happened after the collision, which left multiple tooth fragments in his elbow, is enough to make you choke on your Cheerios.

"The doctor has, [what seemed] like, his whole hand in my elbow trying to take out stuff," Nowitzki said. "It wasn't pretty. We washed it out for like an hour. The worst thing you can get is an infection in your elbow and have surgery. We definitely didn't want that. Washed it out and closed it up, took the X-ray, saw some more stuff. Went back in there, opened it up, washed it out some more, and then finally closed it up after a couple hours."

Nowitzki, who was in touch with Landry on Sunday via text messaging, said the injury was the result of a "messed-up play." But the best news was that after a Saturday filled with pain-killing medication, Nowitzki was much improved Sunday.

He actually thought about playing before the game, taking some jumpers, but quickly realizing it wasn't going to happen.

"I just couldn't extend the elbow out and couldn't really bend it," he said. "It just didn't make sense. But looking at the game now, it was a great decision. We got the win and I got a little rest."

And as for Tuesday, he said he's on "every pill there is and I'd love to play, but if not Tuesday, then definitely on the 26th."
