It got infected with Personal Security.
Everywhere I look it recommends either SpyDoctor or MalwareBytes. SpyDoctor you have to pay for, and it doesn't let me run the installation for MalwareBytes. Help?

You have that pesky windows security warnings virus your kinda fucked every time you go to download something, or open something it's stops the window.

I have found one "FREE" software than can get past it and take care of it.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_spyware_terminator/

If you want a way around opening files do this. right click them and click on "run as"

then switch users and open the file :tu

Are you trying to install malwarebytes in safe mode?

Mr.Bottomtooth
12-21-2009, 03:56 PM
Alright, I installed Malwarebytes in safe mode and ran it three times and it got rid of some infected files but the virus is still there. I've gotten advice that the only way to get rid of it is to totally wipe the computer. Is there anything else I can do before I have to resort to that?

LOL.

It's rare that you have to wipe a drive to get rid of an infection.

Just use lysol. It kills 99.9% of germs and viruses.

I do it all the time. well since I have a POS PC I only have 30 days anyway to use windows.
try installing avast and do a boot up scan you will be amazed what you find.

It's good to know you was able to install and use some programs, your lucky you didn't get the virus that kills all windows.

But there are so many files that get infected you can spend weeks tracking them down, not only that Avast and many virus programs don't find every Trojan, So in a few days or a week later you will see this bug show up again.

And even if you do delete most of the bad files your windows doesn't work properly since many files are missing or in quarantine.

Go ahead and keep cleaning the system but my advice would be a fresh install. You live in SA?

Are you trying to install malwarebytes in safe mode?

This.

Run Safe Mode with Networking. download Malwarebytes in safemode and install/update and run.

If not, try Superantispyware.

If you are computer savy, you could try downloading hijackthis and figure out whats running on your computer. You have to know whats legit and whats not though.

Another thing you could try is click on start > Run and type "msconfig"

In the "startup" tab, remove everything and reboot, then install Malwarebytes. After it has run, reboot and go back into MSconfig and select the programs you know are safe.

You can probably Google ""personal security virus" and get some instructions from sites or forums.

Why GNU/Linux Viruses are fairly uncommon (http://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/evilmalware.html)

evilmalware 0.6 (beta)

Copyright 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005 E\/17 |-|4><0|2z Software Foundation, Inc.

This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY, COMPLETE DESTRUCTION OF IMPORTANT DATA or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE (eg. sending thousands of Viagra spams to people accross the world).
Basic Installation

Before attempting to compile this virus make sure you have the correct version of glibc installed, and that your firewall rules are set to ‘allow everything’.

1. Put the attachment into the appropriate directory eg. /usr/src.
2. Type ‘tar xvzf evilmalware.tar.gz’ to extract the source files for this virus.
3. ‘cd’ to the directory containing the virus' source code and type ‘./configure’ to configure the virus for your system. If you're using ‘csh’ on an old version of System V, you might need to type ‘sh ./configure’ instead to prevent ‘csh’ from trying to execute ‘configure’ itself.
4. Type ‘make’ to compile the package. You may need to be logged in as root to do this.
5. Optionally, type ‘make check_payable’ to run any self-tests that come with the virus, and send a large donation to an unnumbered Swiss bank account.
6. Type ‘make install’ to install the virus and any spyware, trojans pornography, penis enlargement adverts and DDoS attacks that come with it.
7. You may now configure your preferred malware behaviour in /etc/evilmalware.conf.

Wiping it is easier. Once you reinstall windows a few hundred times, you get used to it.

I wouldn't recommend any flavor of linux to someone having problems removing infections. There's plenty of ways to mess up your own system just trying to get stuff to work on it. This is mostly the fault of proprietary drivers and needing Wine to run the usual things, but I digress.

If you are adamant about saving your system, note that you can install things to USB flash drives and so forth, then run them from that media. In my experience, most deep rooted viruses screw up too many OS files to be able to get back to where you were.

SABAR is right! It's like wiping your ass after you have done it a few times. Sometimes I reinstall windows twice a week instead of trying to figure out why I keep getting this program will close errors, or to locate a virus,

When you pirate 4GBs a day in software and games you get used to Trojans, they become like roaches they are here to stay.

I wish Sabar would post more he can save many of us time and money! :toast

Reinstalling windows is an easy way to go if you had the foresight to partition your hard drive(s) so that the system and your data reside on separate partitions.
