IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=dal) cut place-kicker Nick Folk (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10621) on Monday and replaced him with Shaun Suisham (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9361), a former Cowboy.
Suisham previously kicked for Dallas in 2005 and 2006. He was released by Washington on Dec. 8 after missing a key kick -- the same problem that cost Folk his job Monday.

Folk clanged the right upright on an easy 24-yarder that would have put away Saturday night's 24-17 victory against the unbeaten Saints. Instead, the Dallas defense had to make one more stand against one of the league's best offenses.
Folk leads the NFL with 10 misses, going 18-of-28 and missing seven of his past 11.
Suisham was released by the Redskins in great part after he missed a short field goal against New Orleans, which rallied to win in overtime.
Suisham was one of five kickers the Cowboys brought to their facility for a workout Monday. The others were Shane Andrus (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10269), Parker Douglass, Steven Hauschka (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=11923) and Connor Hughes. Folk did not participate in the workout.
For his career, Suisham is 85-of-107 (79.4 percent). He originally signed with Pittsburgh out of Bowling Green in 2005, went to the Cowboys' practice squad and was signed to the active roster on Oct. 24. Suisham played in three games and was 3-of-4 on field goals before being released.
Back with Dallas in 2006, he played in three games and was 1-for-2 before again being cut. He finished the year with the Redskins, appearing in five games and converting 8-of-9 field goals. Suisham played in 16 games for the Redskins in 2007 (29-of-35) and 2008 (26-of-36) and 12 games in 2009.
Dallas tried several remedies while Folk piled up a six-game streak of at least one miss.
First, the Cowboys switched holders, replacing Mat McBriar (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5096) with Tony Romo (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5209) even though their quarterback is haunted by a critical flub late in a playoff loss at Seattle three years ago. Then they tried an in-house competition with kickoff specialist David Buehler (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=12459), who proved unreliable on field goals.
Concerns eased when Folk nailed a 44-yarder just before halftime against the Saints, but it didn't take them long to come back.
"It's a mystery to us," Phillips said before Folk was cut. "We have tried to work it out a lot of different ways. Now it's come to this point."
Adding to the mystery, Folk had missed just 10 kicks in his 2½-year career before slumping. Television footage during Saturday night's game showed Folk's pregame kicks flying all over the place in the controlled atmosphere of the Superdome.

Didn't Suisham get fired for missing a potential game winning field goal?

Yes against, ironically, New Orleans.

Dallas got rid of a kicker with the yips and replaced him with a kicker with the yips.

I liked the move to get rid of Folk, not crazy about the replacement.

I think Folk will kick again...he's 24 or 25 years old...if he can get this out of his head, he'll be fine.

For cowboys sake I hope Shaun does a better job when the game is on the line and doesn't choke again.

Nick Folk will find another kicking opportunity and will probably be back to being a good kicker. A big part of his problems were a result of the hip surgery, and it just spiraled out of control from there.

Folk will undoubtedly kick again. He was considered a top tier kicker when he was healthy, I'm a little surprised Dallas cut him rather than just put him on IR.

They probably have a secret deal to re-sign him in the offseason, but they're keeping that on the low down!

WoW, strange move! Cut 1 suck ass kicker for another!

Maybe Suisham realizes hes got a 2nd shot & kicks better..... or maybe not!

See, initially that's what I thought. Dallas gets rid of a kicker who can't make a FG under pressure for another kicker who was fired for the same thing:(

A lot of time, when a kicker gets the "yips", a change of scenery is all that's needed to get 'em back on the right "foot".

Hope this is the case w/ Suisham.

But his "scenery" is familiar cuz he started with the cowboys!

Suck ass? Suisham was 18/21 this year...hardly suck ass. Folk was 18/28. He missed a few, but one of them, in New Orleans, was because he was sitting on the sidelines forever waiting to kick because they took a year to review a play. He'll be fine.

23 yards, C'Mon!!
He also missed a 30-something yarder when he coulda & shoulda beat dallas! So, he can't come through when called upon!

not that he can't...he just hasn't yet. And he's definitely better than Folk...

18/21 >>>>> 18/28

Looking at Folk's percentages, it's hard to imagine he was the same guy that kicked those 53 yard field goals against the Bills on MNF. Kickers are supposed to be mentally sensitive as fuck, and his numbers after the first week have been all over the place. Someone should have prolly stopped this sooner, but he is young and could recover.

It sucks about Folk, he was so good his first 2 seasons then went to shit. Don't know what the hell happened. He was 20-22 last year, this year 18-28. Not good.

The real head scratcher is, from 40-49 yards. In his first 2 seasons combined he was 17 of 18 and this year 5 of 12.
