Oh yeah...Addai for the TD!

Keeping Peyton on the field for that 4th down = Colts playing to win.

And OH, VINATIERI! Blocked PAT. :( I guess he isn't ready to come back.

Ah. Well, I wouldn't count it out based on that.
But, I DO think Peyton is more concerned about the team, winning, and progressing more than he is about records...though, I'm sure he'd love those too.
And, it's looking more and more like Caldwell is going to stay true to playing the starters unless hurt. If that's the case, Peyton will have plenty of opportunities to move up.

Because one bad play can easily ruin that amazing season they're having. Who gives a crap if they win a meaningless game today? The goal isn't to have the best regular season record; it's to win the Super Bowl, and there's no reason to put that in jeopardy when there's nothing to gain by winning. Hm. Perhaps the Colts should've just given the starters the last 3 games off...that way, they're guaranteed not to get injured before the playoffs....they'd be rusty as hell and no momentum, but hey...at least they're not injured.
Losing their momentum now is the worst thing they can do.

If this wasn't a veteran team that had been there before, then I could see the momentum argument, but I have no worries about Manning and crew all of a sudden getting lazy in practice and not being ready once the games start mattering again. Booing a team for doing the smart thing is ridiculous.

It's not that they lost. That doesn't bother me. It bothers me that they put a newbie behind center who had absolutely no clue.

There were warning signs this would happen before the game, the biggest two being the Colts signing a 3rd QB to the roster and deactivating Mathis for the game. The reason starters only played for a half is because they were trying to get a few players to different individual milestones. Peyton needed about 160 to break 50,000 for his career and Clark needed 3 yards to break 1,000 for the season. The way this game went was textbook Indianapolis Colts when going into shut-down, preseason mode at the end of the year. Get the guys who've earned it their goals, and then prioritize health.

This Colts team earned the right to decide they wanted to rest. They won 14 straight games and clinched home field. The fans at the game today were pretty shitty with their booing, just because you get to 14-0 doesn't mean you have some god given duty to go for 19-0. Undefeated season talk is for the fans, which is obviously why it's a big deal to some Colts fans that they shut it down in this game the way they did. But the team has its own goals, and obviously an undefeated season is not one of them. You need a healthy team to win in the playoffs and that's what the Colts want to have.

The booing was at Caldwell and by extension Bill Polian. That's the sad reality about this whole situation, is because Caldwell's decision to pull people effectively screwed Painter out of a fair shake because it made the crowd freak out. Did anybody expect Painter to come in and close the game out? Or actually score points? Think about it. A rookie, getting his first playing time of the year. Against a pretty good defense. It would have happened to any rookie QB, I would think. But the booing wasn't even for him.

“I’m disappointed,” Manning said. “There were some chances, I think, to do some things better out there. The turnover and the kickoff return, those are plays that we haven’t given up this year and when you do, it’s hard to win. So we’ve got some things to get corrected and that will be the plan starting tomorrow.”

ducks
12-27-2009, 08:27 PM
Caldwell made the move to sit Manning & Co. after taking a 15-10 lead with 5:36 left in the third quarter, focused on a Super Bowl run rather than regular-season perfection. But to the fans at Lucas Oil Stadium, who wanted to send players to Buffalo with a chance to match New England’s perfect 2007 regular season, it clearly mattered.

“Indianapolis earned the right to do whatever they want,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “That’s a heck of a football team. We were just going to line up and play, one way or the other. Whoever was in a Colts uniform was who we were going to play against.”

Don Shula’s 1972 Miami Dolphins remained the only NFL team to go an entire season undefeated.

“While the Jets’ win today ended Indianapolis’ streak and showed once again how difficult it is to go undefeated, I want to congratulate the Colts on a great run,” Shula said. “Peyton Manning proved once again this season why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the NFL and it was certainly no surprise to see him lead the Colts to an NFL-record 23 straight victories.”

On the second series the starters sat out, fans started booing. The boos grew louder with each play, reaching a crescendo when Manning’s replacement, Curtis Painter(notes), was hit by Calvin Pace(notes) while setting to throw and lost the ball. Jets defensive end Marques Douglas(notes) fell on it and rolled into the end zone for the go-ahead score with 1:29 left in the third quarter.

“It was an unfortunate situation, he hit me right at the right time to force the fumble,” said Painter, who added that the booing didn’t bother him.

With Manning, Reggie Wayne(notes), Dallas Clark(notes) and Joseph Addai(notes) out, that was all the Jets needed to take over.

New York sealed it with two fourth-quarter scores—a 43-yard field goal from Jay Feely(notes) and a 1-yard TD run from Thomas Jones(notes).

As the clock wound down, some fans were silent and many left. Those who stayed booed as players shook hands, an odd way to end the record-setting 23-game streak.

The year they won the Super Bowl they played wire-to-wire IIRC. Maybe that's a coincidence, maybe it isn't.

I don't fault him for being told to do stuff he was too old to do (apparently one of which being prevent David Tyree from catching a ball on his helmet), IMO that's more the coaching staff and FO. He hasn't been the only player Belichick overused too much when that player was too old. Up until Teddy Bruschi retired BB was ready to go into this season with him as a starting ILB, he was in no way capable of being a spot player anymore.

This is random but after I watched St. Louis today, I'm still baffled as to how Laurinaitis slipped as far as he did. Tied for 11th in the league in tackles (4th in the league in solo tackles), great in coverage, and just seems to have that "it" factor Chris Collinsworth loves.

Over the course of the winning streak, Rivers’ 112.6 passer rating is by far the best in the NFL. His 20 touchdowns in the 10 games are second to Manning’s 21, but Rivers has been intercepted just six times to Manning’s 11. Rivers has completed 69.4 percent of his passes, Drew Brees 69.5 and Manning 66.1.

He probably had the "white LB from Ohio State" stigma. usually honky LB's from Ohio State are either really really overrated (AJ Hawk) or just flat out suck balls (Bobby Carpenter, Andy Katzenmoyer)

Well I guess Katz didn't really suck balls, he was just injury prone. I don't remember him being all that great for the Pats tho.

You can throw AJ Hawk in there with Carpenter. Dude is ass. He has about as bad coverage that an MLB can have.

I wasn't a huge college fan back then but if I remember correctly none of them were as good as Laurinaitis was in college. What makes the least sense to me is how his stock inexplicably fell so much after a senior season just as good as his sophomore and junior seasons. Him, Oher, and Maualuga would have all been top 10 picks if they left after their junior year, they all fell way down draft boards for no reason, and now they're tearing it up their rookie year.

I think Katzenmoyer and Hawk were both better than Laurinaitis in college. They definitely got alot more media hype.

Hawk was supposed to be the next big thing. Pretty funny how much love Hawk, Sims and Greenway got yet none of them lived up to the bill.
