Celtics could be shorthanded vs. Suns

Losers of two straight games, the Boston Celtics could be without Kevin Garnett (sore right knee) for Wednesday night's game against the Phoenix Suns, and perhaps longer.

The Celtics already will be shorthanded against the Suns. They will be without Glen Davis (mild right ankle sprain) and Paul Pierce (right knee) and could also be missing Rajon Rondo, who is questionable with a sore left hamstring.

The Celtics ruled out Davis earlier Wednesday and deemed Garnett a game-time decision.

"If I do decide to sit [Garnett], I'm not sitting him for one game. I can tell you that," Celtics coach Doc Rivers told Comcast Sportsnet. "I told Kevin that."

Rivers told Comcast that if he decided to sit Garnett, he would probably keep him out two games until about Jan. 6, when the Celtics face the Heat, or longer. He said he wasn't sure if that was the direction he was going to take with Garnett but that he was "leaning that way heavily."

"It's early in the season," Rivers told Comcast. "We got tonight and we got two days, and then we got three days after that. To me, if you're going to rest guys, this is the perfect time to do it."

Garnett was accidentally kicked in the knee -- the same one that was surgically repaired in the offseason -- in Monday's loss to the Golden State Warriors. Celtics trainer Ed Lacerte told the Boston Herald through the team that the latest issue with Garnett's knee is not related to the problems that led to Garnett's offseason surgery.

Both Garnett and Rondo participated in Wednesday morning's shootaround, the team said, but Davis did not. Rivers told Comcast that Rondo was more likely to play than Garnett.

Rondo has been battling the sore hamstring for the past few games. Davis suffered the ankle sprain in Monday's loss.

Pierce underwent an arthroscopic procedure to drain fluid from his right knee last Wednesday. It was originally thought he might miss two weeks, but Rivers later said he could return sooner.

The Celtics also recalled guard Lester Hudson from the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League Wednesday. Hudson had been reassigned there on Dec. 26 and has appeared in five games with the Red Claws.

Suns are completely healthy, have had two days' rest, and are at home against a banged-up Celtics squad without Garnett, Pierce, Davis, and possibly Rondo. No excuses.

Damn it, why does this game have to be at 3am? Why can't it be at least at 1am? The same with the Kings, at 4am. Damn it.

PHX should just run boston into the ground..It looks like age is definetly gonna hurt Boston from here on out..Its gonna be tough for a bunch of players in their 30's to play this much & go through long physical playoff series' especially in the east.

Dudley's had several games this year where he looks like the best player on the court. What he lacks in athleticism, he makes up for in hustle and extremely high BBall IQ.

And, he's the best 3-point shooter in the league. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/statistics?stat=nba3ptpct&season=2010&league=nba)

No Rondo? Hah, hopefully Nash can put this away early so I can get a new career high.

If the Suns can escape December with wins over Orlando, Boston, San Antonio, and the LA Lakers, I won't consider this month a complete failure.

So far, much better. 41-30, Suns, halfway through the 2nd quarter.

Well then I might actually have to flip to this game if the UA games gets even worse.

Not going well. Dragic hasn't done shit yet (although Barbosa was maybe ballhogging).

The Celtics better hope they don't see the Suns in the finals or something, although Pierce and Garnett aren't playing. The Suns did beat the Celtics at full strength earlier in the season.

Suns are playing lazy ball right now. Careless turnovers again and again. Not enough movement on offense.

I don't know if JRich's injury is that bad, but he can't hit any open shots.

Channing Frye having a very good game. 21 pts, 8 reb.

90-73, Suns, heading into the 4th quarter.

Congrats Phoenix fans. Thoroughly stomped our ass and the Lakers. Hell of a week for you guys.

Celtics definitely need some more depth behind Pierce...

Jesus, you scared me, I was not awake yet and thought we were talking about Chiris Dudley's corpse. Anyway, ok win, but most of Boston was gone or hurt so this would have been a dissapointing one to lose.

The celts need to look into that Portland superpower that lets you become more powerful the more players you have go down.

Wow, the Phoenix Suns are for real. Finally they have added a little defense to go with their high flying offense.

Frye has to be the MIP of the league right now, followed closely by Dudley.

Seriously. League leader in 3P% going into the LA game, it's not like they kept leaving some scrub wide open.

Not to mention he has a crazy high basketball IQ, and we owe around 5-7 wins to his big plays.

He's the "anti-Amare". No athleticism, tons of bball knowledge and hustle.

No, they need more depth behind Marquis Daniels, a better 4th wing than Tony Allen or Scalabrine. But if everybody is healthy in the playoffs it won't really matter.
