By Douglas Pils - Express-News The Spurs became one of the NBA's elite in the decade with championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007 and two losses in the Western Conference finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.

• Gregg Popovich's team started the decade with a 53-win season, and it did better than that every year, winning 58 or more six times.

• Power forward Tim Duncan fashioned a Hall of Fame career, winning two MVP trophies and two Finals MVP honors.

• Shooting guard Manu Ginobili, the 57th pick in 1999, and point guard Tony Parker, the 28th pick in 2001, gave the Spurs international appeal and created the perfect power trio with Duncan. The guards' All-Star performances illustrate the game's rise to worldwide prominence.

Ginobili drove that point home by leading Argentina to the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics. The Spurs expounded on that point by drafting 12 foreign players in the decade.

• Bruce Bowen became one of Popovich's great finds, landing on five NBA All-Defensive units.

• David Robinson ended his career with the 2003 championship and became the Spurs' second Hall of Fame member in 2009.

San Antonio's Tim Duncan Keeps Promise, Re-Signs With Spurs; Inks $32.6 Million Pact
August 21, 2000
The San Antonio Spurs have re-signed star forward Tim Duncan, locking up the biggest prize in this year's free-agent class.

The 24-year-old Duncan reportedly agreed to a three-year deal worth $32.6 million. It has a fourth-year option that would make it worth $45.9 million.

"We're all very fortunate to keep him in the fold," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said at a recent news conference. "We didn't take anything for granted in the whole process, and we're thrilled that he's decided to stay with this group of players and coaches and with this city. It makes everybody feel really good about what's going around here."

Last month, Duncan announced that he would re-sign with the Spurs despite the Orlando Magic's efforts to woo him with a reported six-year, $67.5 million contract (JET, July 31).

Duncan reportedly came close to accepting the Orlando offer, only to be swayed toward staying with the Spurs when teammate David Robinson flew back to San Antonio from Hawaii to make a last-ditch appeal.

Duncan could have signed with San Antonio for as many as seven years, but instead chose to take a shorter deal with an eye toward getting a contract worth more than $100 million the next time he becomes a free agent.

The 7-foot forward led San Antonio to the NBA championship in 1999, but missed the playoffs last season with a knee injury.

That contract right there is what set the stage for the class of '10; LeBron, Wade and Bosh all took note and decided on taking the shorter contract (an opt-out after year-three) to keep leverage over their team on the court and in the pocketbook.

three finals mvp. right?

Only two in this decade, which is what the article is about. He won three overall, but the 99 FMVP was in the last decade.
