I'm not the best website designer out there..and I'm definitely not the richest person to afford a custom website..........yet.

That being said, I have to make my own website using JS, CSS, and HTML I find in random places all over the web.

For the New Year, I thought I'd roll out a new design, something rather simple and (hopefully) with no learning curve.

I'd like to get some real world feedback on what you guys think...especially on the "PORTFOLIO" section.

Thanks!

http://www.davidteran.com/

BTW - I apologize to the viewers with 24"+ monitors. The design was made to fit 1024x768.

This is how "it's supposed" to look. (http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8039/picture1qs.png)

it's clean. i like it except i'd put thumbnails for the portfolio that you can click and instantly go to the photo in the slide instead of having to slide through all the photos to get to the one you want. it's all preference though.

I love the minimalism; most webpages are entirely too cluttered with useless crap, but yours is to the point and looks great in my browser (Firefox 3.5 in Ubuntu 9.10 @ 1920x1080).

I strongly disagree. Thumbnails would be very distracting. If the filmstrip was really long, then that may be called for, but not one that can be cycled through in about a minute and is designed to show his entire portfolio.

wish i could find some sort of example of what i am thinking of. not a traditional thumbnail gallery.

but yeah it all boils down to personal preference. good job btw.

Very nice and clean. I would include some sort of instructions on how to navigate those pictures...believe it or not...some people will bitch about it...maybe put something on the top right saying to use your mouse to view more pictures by moving it to the right or left.

And tell the girl in the black skirt I love her...

Depends what you're using the website for. If it's just for your portfolio and to have it readily available for prospective jobs or clients you've come into contact with already and to maybe show friends and family, it's fine.

But if you really want traffic and use it as a tool to get prospective jobs and clients you don't even know, I don't think there's enough content. Say for example, I'm a VP of a company looking for a fresh new photographer to do a shoot for our next ad campaign. And, I'm just surfing the net looking for relatively unknown photographers who have a new and unique style. And I happen to find your website. It's not enough for me to be wowed to want to contact you about the job.

Maybe add pages where you show the evolution of some of your pictures if you did special effects to them. IIRC, you did that football stadium one where you added a different things. Show the different pictures that were part of the end product. Or pages where you have a set of pictures from the same shoot. If you have a set of the volleyball player or tennis player, show all the good pictures from that set on one page. I little write-up on yourself probably wouldn't hurt either.

There definitely is something good about simple, clean, and straight to the point. But, there is also something to being memorable.

And, I'm no web designer. So, I really don't know how to tell you to improve it in terms of adding different web thingies, tools, widgets, what have you. I'm just saying if I got to your website and went through your pics, I might think it's ok, but I probably wouldn't come back again and I wouldn't think about it once I clicked away. It's not really memorable enough.

the bikini idea was a last second thing, and it didn't work out too well (we were rushed, and i didn't think, and i cut off her feet) thus the reason i didn't use it.

but enjoy, i guess.

i know exactly what you are saying, and that's the downfall of the simplicity of this site. it's difficult to balance "simple" and "WOW".

I just think you need some sort of border or frame around the images to anchor it to the page. And it still retains it's clean look.

http://imgburst.com/up/photography2500.jpg

I also don't like the idea of the 'frame' being wider than just one image. It doesn't dress up your images to show 1 + 1/4 images when the page loads.

exactly what i am talking about... flash component with xml pulled images. you could probably pull the same effect off with css&xml.

well if i can figure that out, i'll be working on that. i need some sort of mouseover JS code to make the thing pop up over when you put the mouse over something specific... and then i need some sort of "database" to load the images from. i'm not sure of the technical term for that.

I also don't like the idea of the 'frame' being wider than just one image. It doesn't dress up your images to show 1 + 1/4 images when the page loads.

the idea of the "frame" being wider than one image is so that people know there are more images, and can at least start looking at the next image, to scroll over.

First of all, any time you run a business it's important to realize that you don't have to do everything. You're a very good photographer, you don't also have to be a good website designer, just pay someone else to do it and focus on what you do best. You can even check out Craigslist and see if you can setup a barter.

As for the site itself: Having just one image does clean it up even more, if you liked ultra simplicity this would be it, but that's not my taste. I'm all for simple and clean, but not ultra simple.

Adding the border does add something to it, so you might be heading in the right direction in that regard. If it were me I'd probably go with something like this:

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/6368/54227982.jpg

The poorly done arrow on the right would indicate to the visitor that there are more pictures and hovering over that would initiate the movement. I wouldn't go with that red either, it's more of a pink but I'm sure it was just put there as an example, just like my arrow.

I don't know if you need thumbs on the main page, because you probably wouldn't put that many pictures on it, but on the portfolio there are a lot and it seemed like it was never going to end, and I had no idea how many were remaining, thumbs helps with that.

Nice job, looks simple and clean.

But it would be a bit better in my eyes to see the photos of your portfolio a bit faster. It takes pretty long time for all these photos to scroll left.

It would be nice to have something like the buttons on the bar at the bottom of a mac. you know, the pictograms, when you go over them their size increases a bit? But then that your photos are small pictograms and when you go over them with your pointer they will get bigger.

that would be simple with css.

make same thumb dimensions, downsize in css about 40%, img tag hover = 100% (this is not syntax or code), and walla!

maybe i'm not explaining it so well.

my eventual goal is to be a commercial photographer, and not just someone in San Antonio, to be honest. not necessarily an "exclusive" site, because i made readily available a phone number and an email address to reach me, but i don't want to convey to people that i do baby portraits and baptisms.

I'm not exactly sure why, but i have always had a negative opinion of "professional" photographers. First off... Taking pictures is easy, a baby could do it. The only reason one persons' pictures look better than anothers' is because they have more expensive equipment. And no offense to you, david teran, but aren't you a little kid? Did your parents buy you all that equipment? Secondly, photographers have always seemed kinda sleazy to me.. Like they figured this is the perfect opportunity for them to take scantily clad pictures of pretty women and not seem like the perv they are. I'm not saying you are a pervert, david, but do you really think sarah would want you posting her bikini pictures to show these real-life, true perverts on spurstalk? Not to mention, you did post those pics in almost a gloating fashion. Just reaffirms my opinion of "professional" photographers.

You do make a good point but ask yourself, when you need a new coffee maker do you go to Wall mart or to Star bucks? I know the cheesy site with all the cheesy 10% and senor citizen's discount deals looks low class and all but how much business do you lose by not getting the money from your average wall mart shopper?

also props for taking the "negative" feedback well , many people around here start a topic like this then get all butt hurt when they don't like what they read, like the "Do you like my wallpaper?" topics. they always say let me know what you think good or bad then they call you a douche when you criticize something. maybe not with google but you sure do think you know plenty... i wonder why there's so many books on photography and schools if it's just a hobby like you say? makes one think there's more to it then just the camera huh?

you kidding? there's books on everything.

yes, people do it for a living, but it's something that ANYONE could do. besides, that's not really the point of my original post.

Don't be so sure and full of shit. I bet if you had the best equipment around and you had to shoot photographs, it would still came out as shit or average.

It's technical and it's a artistic thing. Don't think anyone could do it just like that. You need to learn and know how to.

Of course anyone can shoot photo's but not of these qualities.

Damn, I would love to give you a good camera for a day, to see what you'll end up with, just because your mouth is so big now. :lol

In this case, the glimpses are seen through the eyes of 500 Palestinian children ages 7 to 12 who were asked to take disposable point-and-shoot cameras out into the field.

I would watch bringing up how only people who have talent or went to school can take good pictures there are many kids doing it if you check out Google, in fact there is a zoo where monkeys are given a camera and taking award winning photos.

just a heads up.

are you sitting there telling me that you are too dumb to click a button? because I am certainly not. I dont care what setting the pictures were taken in, doesn't really matter

you're so full of shit man...

so if anyone can shoot photos of the caliber or higher then why do people in the professional field get paid 6 figures+? explain please.... because by your definition all the companies should be paying minimum wage to idiots who can just push a button.

you're a fool and ignorance is your ally.

you can say the same about 3d artists though those who don't have a good grasp on lighting usually end up with shit results. good day dumbass.

yeah, LMAO at your quick defense of the hobby of photography, i'm not sure where your loyalty comes from, but I will tell you that you are wrong. There are always a select few people who get paid gobs of money for doing the same work as others, they just happen to be victims of fortuitous circumstances. Maybe they take pictures at the base of an active volcano, or they camp out in frozen antarctica for a year to capture mating habits of polar bears or something. There are photographers who take good pictures and perform valuable services. then there are photographers who take the exact same picture anyone else would standing behind a lense pushing a button.

The only reason one persons' pictures look better than anothers' is because they have more expensive equipment.

if i place you in the seat of Dale Earnhardt's 3 Busch Series car, does that make you a good driver?

if i were to give you a Montblanc pen, would that make you a world-class lawyer?

if you were to get into a Speedo LZR suit, would you turn into the next Michael Phelps?

contrary to popular belief, your equipment doesn't make you who you are.

i don't claim to be any Annie Leibowitz or Ansel Adams, but i can assure you i'm not doing what i do because i have an "expensive" camera.

oh, quite the contrary - i just got a new "expensive" (nikon d700, $2500) camera in november. 85% of my shots on my website were taken with a $200 camera.

And no offense to you, david teran, but aren't you a little kid? Did your parents buy you all that equipment?

i guess some would consider me a kid..i'm 20. to answer your question, my parents gave me a $200 camera on my 18th birthday (november 6, 2007). that's ALL the camera gear they've bought for me.

the rest of the $10,000+ gear i own, i paid for every single cent.

Nice site! :tu

It has just enough to get you excited about your product without confusing anybody.

BTW, I love the pic of the city with the person's feet dangling in the frame. My second favorite was the gal sitting at the piano with her back to the camera. Awesome shots.

thank you! :toast

the person's feet dangling in front of the city is actually ME. haha. i had been wanting to have a cameo in my website for a while, and i thought that would work best.

those are all bad analogies. here are some better ones.

if i gave you a stick of dynamite and a detonator does that make you a demolition expert?

if i give you a high powered telescope does that make you an astronomer?

it's a matter of the tool doing all the work rather than the person controlling the tool doing the work.

thispego

also, you skipped responding to this part...

Just reaffirms my opinion of "professional" photographers.

why would you suggest a photographer doesn't do anything at all, but that it's the camera?

85% of my work my website was done with a crappy 10 year old $200 camera. that kind of voids your argument.

so Pego,

Tim Duncan's not good at basketball. The basketball is just good at going in the rim without his help. Or the astronomer's telescope labels stars and explains their formation and contents, not the scientist.

:rolleyes

And seriously bro, a chick who's clearly posing for photographs probably doesn't mind people seeing said pics of her... she probably knows that's going to happen, or she wouldn't be posing in the first place.

haha you are a moron, you picked probably his dumbest analogy to make your point.

a basketball is not a machine that does all the work for you. any idiot can pick up a camera and take a picture and develop it or look into a telescope and record what they see.

i never actually commented on YOUR work, just the work of photographers in general. I mean, my honest opinion of your work is that they are pictures, just look like regular pictures you would see in a magazine or yearbook or something. I dont think they're GREAT i don't think they're HORRIBLE. They're pictures, how great or horrible could they be? I think all these people could have taken portraits themseves but, hey, i guess that's why they hire you, you have the equipment and it's probably easier than going out to rent your own.

Having done some photography and TONS of Photoshop touch-ups and alterations...I will say that it DOES take someone who knows a little something about posing...setting up the shot...frame of reference...and an overall good knowledge of context to pull off a great photograph...however...even a bad shot can almost always be saved by my friend...Photoshop... :D

I'm a fan of your work and I think your new website is a great start considering you just found code over the internet and put it all together to come up with it.

My opinions on the site: I don't particularly like the effect you used for your portfolio section - it makes me dizzy. I also feel it doesn't showcases your work very well. Thumbnails are almost always a good idea. I think once you figure out what you want to do with your site, more content should be added. Also, I cringed a little when I saw the font you used for your logo. Just my very humble opinion, of course. :)

Good start, though.

i appreciate your opinion, as humble as you think it is!
maybe i should slow down the scroll? the problem with that is that it is slow on the way back, as well.

i wish i were better with code...or that i had a spare $5000 around to purchase the site that i eventually want to upgrade to. lol.

and by content do you mean more photos?
