I heard that news yesterday and it made me a bit pissed (mainly because Mexico City people act like fucking animals). This guy played his heart out with Jaguares and America, and an entire country was looking forward to a good performance playing for Paraguay.

The fact that he probably won't play another game in his life is the least of anyone's worries. I feel for the guy and the family, and hope he gets well soon.

April 8, 2010 |
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef0133ec8cc0de970b-320wi Six months ago, Javier Hernandez was close to quitting soccer. On Thursday, he became an international soccer star.
Hernandez, the 21-year-old scoring leader for the Mexican national team, has agreed to a transfer to Manchester United of the English Premier League. Hernandez's Mexican club, Chivas of Guadalajara, will receive an undisclosed transfer fee once Hernandez obtains a work permit, The striker, who sustained a thigh strain last week, has already passed a physical, the English club said.
Hernandez, who was named to Mexico's preliminary World Cup roster and has 10 goals in eight games for Chivas this year, is expected to join that team in training camp this weekend. He won't begin his assignment in England until after the World Cup.
"I am delighted to reach agreement with Chivas to bring such an exciting young striker, who has been in such prolific form for both his club and his country," Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. "He will be a great addition to our squad, and we look forward to welcoming our first Mexican player in the summer."
As part of the agreement between Manchester United and Chivas, Manchester United will travel to Guadalajara to play the Mexican club in the opening match in Chivas' long-delayed 45,000-seat stadium July 30
"We are equally excited to play our first game in Mexico, opening the magnificent new Chivas stadium in July," Ferguson said.
Frustrated by a lack of playing time, Hernandez nearly walked away from soccer to concentrate on his college studies in business administration. But he came off the bench in last fall's Apertura to score 11 goals in 18 games, earning a tryout with the national team this winter, and he hasn't looked back since.

That's what I was thinking also. I thought he'd might go to a mid-table team in Spain, Holland, or Germany (like Guardado, Salcido, Pavel, etc...) The only recent players that come to mind that have successfully made a transition from Mexican football to the EPL are Rodallega and Guille Franco (although he spent some time at Villareal first), but neither of them are Mexican

The second half of that game was awesome. He had a couple more chances, especially when Berbatov had it at midfield and failed to through-pass it to Chicharito who would have been one on one with the keeper.

I think the difference is that they (guardado, chich, and rafa) had to work for their right to play in Europe, while vela and gio were handed spots on big clubs from a very early age. Suddenly Giovani hasn't looked so great without Ronaldinho and Messi on his side. And Vela should take that damn smile off his face every time he misses a clear chance at goal.

I've watched every game he's played in and he's one of the best players on the field. At Celtic they play him as a center mid but he's all over the place, basically a box to box midfielder.

2 goals in 2 european matches, meaning He has scored in a Champions league qualifier, and today in the Europa league qualifer. This was his 4th or 5th game with Celtic so 2 goals in 4-5 games. Still good for a CM though. :lol

Hopefully he keeps playing well and can make a leap to a bigger league.

Despite being less talented we need players on the team like Orozco, did anybody see his interview when he was told he was on the list for the Ecuador/Colombia games? Almost started crying out of joy and out of the pride he has of representing Mexico. We need that not fags that dont show up when theyre called up because they have "obligations" with their clubs. Gonna need a whole lot of luck to ever make a WC squad for Brasil or Spain.

I don't really know what's behind the whole club/NT situation with Jonathan, but if you sign a contract that says you have to do something with the club and it interferes with the NT over a friendly... I would honor it.

Well... he should be. Chicharito has been playing great since he went to Europe... Vela on the other hand...

I thought it was interesting when I saw a poll on Univision asking if people believed that Vela deserved to be in the national team... he still got about 60% on his favor... but he definitely needs to step it up now more than ever. It used to be only Vela and Dos Santos, the other guys are starting to step up and put it in the net... they better watch their backs.

Btw... is Vela going to start now that Walcott got injured? This should be great considering he's been waiting for the opportunity, I sure wish him the best if he is...

I was reading this which led me to believe he is..

This part is interesting

According to Arsene, the Mexican is in good shape, let’s just hope this means we will see more of Vela as time is running out for him.

Many believe he’s no good for Arsenal. Some say he’s lazy, some say he’s too lightweight, others that he smiles too much. My opinion is that whenever he was involved he impressed, either in a way or another. And I’m sorry, but judging someone who is yet to play two games in a row as a regular is just plain foolish. Give him a run in the first team, 5-10 games and then we judge. Many were given such an opportunity, it’s time for Carlos to be given the same treatment.

Carlos Vela, Efrain Juarez Suspended From Mexican National Team For Six Months

Carlos Vela and Efrain Juarez were suspended for six months by the Mexican Football Federation and fined 50,000 pesos after the due broke some rules of conduct following a friendly against Colombia in Monterrey earlier this month.

FMF executive Nestor De La Torre announced the actions on Tuesday. Other players were involved in the after-hours incidents in Monterrey and were fined but only Vela and Juarez were slapped with suspensions.

Vela, who plays for Arsenal in England, and Juarez, of Scottish side Celtic, broke four rules of conduct while their fellow Tricolor teammates broke only one, De La Torre said.

Also receiving fines were Guillermo Ochoa, Francisco Rodriguez, Carlos Salcido, Andres Guardado, Gerardo Torrado, Pablo Barrera, Giovani dos Santos, Javier Hernandez, Rafael Marquez, Enrique Esqueda and Hector Moreno. The fines amount to roughly $4,000 USD.

Mexico beat Colombia 1-0 in Monterrey as part of the nation's Bicentennial celebrations.

Vela and Juarez will be unable to play for Mexico until mid-March if the suspensions hold. Mexico has at least one match in that span as El Tri will play a friendly in early February, during the first of FIFA's international fixture dates of 2011.

Those 13 national team players who were fined aren't going to like this. They teamed up to kick out Chepo's brother Nestor. Chepo is a disciplinarian like his brother.

I don't know... those two (De la Torre brothers) never really seemed to get along.

It's nice that he scored, but he did miss the 3rd and potential game-winner. Although the player that passed him the ball gave it to him too late, as the goalkeeper had already come out and closed the angle.

Still, good to see Gio playing up to his potential. We all know he's better than what he has proven post-Barcelona

No not really... The Venezuelan forward headed the ball near the 1st post (off of a corner) but ran in largely unimpeded by the Mexican defense... Ochoa never really had a chance to run out to the ball before the forward made contact (even if it looks like he initially stutter-steps before lounging for the ball)...

That might be the case a couple of years down the road... the 'farming system' embedded in High-School / Collegiate athletic programs is a big plus for U.S. Soccer and will eventually pay dividends as far as producing talented players is concerned (even those of Mexican descent rising through those ranks)...

Anyways, there is no such system (with that level of organization) among Mexican high schools... most of the kids develop their game in the streets (torneos de barrio etc...), and are found by scouts as 'diamonds in the rough'... They don't have access to special training, coaching, workouts, or enhanced nutrition... many of them have to work on the side to provide for their familes... it is this environment which produces Mexican footballers...

Anyways, I kind of drifted off topic...

Another front in which the MLS needs to drastically improve before it can take the 'title' of 'best league in CONCACAF'... is with the level of its referrees... Seriously , there is simply no comparison between the two leagues on this front... In-game violence [as opposed to security breach induced fan-on-the-pitch-violence :lol] is a detriment to the level of the MLS and will keep star players from choosing to play in said league...

The league has suffered three horrific fractures over the past several weeks (David Ferreira, Steve Zakuani, Javier Morales), a fact which diminishes the overall product on the pitch... I watched the Real Salt Lake vs. Chivas USA match in which Morales suffered his injury... Yeah, it was a bad, late not necessarily malicious-but-still reckless tackle... but the ref allowed the chippiness of the game to escalate to that level... there were a couple a bad challenges prior to that play that were slowly building up the agression of the next tackle... IMO it could have been prevented, had the ref properly sanctioned those previous challenges...

To borrow a quote from a recent article:

[I]"MLS as a whole lacks depth. It needs every good player it has to stay healthy, and the fact that so many of its best have at late been cut down while performing for their teams is cause for serious concern.

That the fallen players were good players didn't need to be proven anywhere else, because those players proved it where it mattered.

MLS may want to show that it's a tough league, and indeed, it probably wins the award for most broken legs this past month.

It would be better, though, if MLS was known for skillful play. Yet that's never going to happen if the players capable of such skill keep going down."

Manchester United keeping tabs on El Cubo Torres

Torres has scored six goals in 19 appearances since making his Chivas debut against Monterrey last November and his form has earned him a call-up into Mexico's Under-20 squad for the Toulon tournament in France.
PSV Eindhoven have already scouted the player in Mexico, but Manchester United have forged close links with Chivas since signing Hernández, aka Chicharito, for £6 million in April last year.
And Sir Alex Ferguson and chief scout Jim Lawlor have been made aware of Torres's emergence since breaking into the Chivas first-team.
Torres, nicknamed 'El Cubo', stands 5ft 11in and is described as being strong in the air and with a powerful shot.
