The Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey Nets have reached a verbal agreement on a trade that will send reserve forward Kris Humphries to the Nets and bring forward Eduardo Najera back to Dallas after the Mavericks acquired him in the 2000 draft.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com on Friday night that the Nets have also agreed to use a trade exception to absorb the $2.4 million expiring contract of exiled Mavs swingman Shawn Williams to complete the deal.

Sources said the deal might not be finalized before the league office reopens Monday.

The Nets will waive Williams as soon as they get him and must also another release another player -- little-used Sean Williams is considered a prime candidate -- to create the required roster space to make the trade.

The teams have been discussing the deal for several days but talks appeared to break down when the Nets shifted their focus earlier in the week to the buyout of veteran guard Rafer Alston and the acquisition of reserve guard Chris Quinn from Miami.

Mavericks will probably be the oldest team in the league if this deal does go through.

It's purely a financial move. Najera is not expected to claim a spot in the rotation.

Eh, they just don't have enough minutes for him with Dirk, TT, Dampier and Gooden. I think it saves the Mavs like $2-3 million in luxury tax.

Humphries had a better +/- than Gooden. I don't understand this trade. Saving money by Cuban? When did this become a priority?

There is a possibility that it could be a part of something bigger, but It's probably just a money saving move. Gonna miss Humphries; hope he does well in NJ.

Sell more tickets at the AAC so more Mexicans will show up to the games....Im mean we are taking over the U.S. so it makes the most financial sense as far as revenue goes....think of all those Najera t-shirts and jerseys that will be sold

true, but us Net fans(on a Nets message board think Humphries would be a better back up then Najera, and with only 3 wins doesn't hurt to trade Najera at all:toast
