Just saw this last night. Thought it was great, a nice return to form for Gilliam. Ledger, as usual, was very impressive and the way the story was set up did help Gilliam use different actors to fill in the scenes Ledger was not around to film. I read an interview yesterday on io9 where he stated he used every bit of film Ledger was in:

Colin Farrell did not annoy the crap out of me for once, but I have to say Jude Law was the most impressive of those standing in for Ledger by a good bit. Overall, a very entertaining movie.

I would say it's not for general consumption. Gilliam fans will enjoy it for sure.

I'll have to check it out. I'm glad Gilliam has gotten past the atrocity that was Tideland.

Definitely been waiting for this one for a couple of years now so it's a must see.

I never liked much about Colin Ferrell until I watched In Bruges. Now I know he has chops, he just needs to mix in those type roles with the cash cow roles he was taking for a while.

It drives me crazy that this one isn't playing near me. I've been dying to see it since shooting started.

I am pissed only one of my good friends has seen it. I want and need to talk about it without spoiling it.

I loved Fear and Loathing. Went to see this in NY and thought it was the worst movie I'd seen in theaters in a couple years. Epically boring in the middle and no real story to speak of. Tom Waits should be up for a Razzie.

I don't know that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas should really be used as a measure for judging Gilliam's films. I love that one, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't scream Terry Gilliam to me like Brazil, Time Bandits, Adventures of Baron Munchausen, or even 12 Monkeys does.

I just used it to show I have enjoyed Gilliam's work (also like 12 monkeys). The movie was crap.

This blurb sums it up pretty well:

Imaginarium might have worked as a short film, but at two hours it becomes a soul-sucking void.

Wow. I figured a lot of people wouldn't care about or get the story, but I don't see how you can say it had no story. It was a story about stories. If you had said Brothers Grimm was that bad, I might agree. To each his own.

There was no development of the story. I'm fine with figuring out what has happened off screen in the past. But Gilliam does it in a manner that leaves you cold to the outcome of their "duel". It's anti-climactic and if you can honestly say the middle portion wasn't boring as hell, then I'm not sure what else I can say.

These critics say it best:

Parnassus continues Gilliam's decade-old habit of sabotaging his work by piling on wild images without regard to character development or storytelling.

Gilliam and McKeown's willful refusal of coherent narrative and determination to pack every idea about art they ever had into one scenario, make this fiendishly gorgeous movie more exhausting than exhilarating to watch.

It plays like a salvage job, with all the attendant compromises. Though the film is laden with backstory and exposition, not much actually happens onscreen.

I didn't think it was boring. I do think it was all over the place, and can see how it might be seen as boring, but I was pretty drawn into it. Agree to disagree then.
