View Full Version : So what do you look forward to every day?

Serious question here. What exactly gets you through the day? Maybe I'm going out on limb here but I'd suspect that most of us have a job that we may not hate but don't exactly love. I know we all aren't just waking up everyday looking forward to tackling the mundane aspects of our 9-5ers.

I've always said that happiness like sadness or anger are extremes. We don't live in a perpetual state of bliss and more than we do a perpetual state of hate (I'm aware of the irony) so that leaves us with trying to find a way to keep reality on a even keel. Naturally I think we look towards something. Our moment of gratification in the otherwise neutral existence so many of us float through. Breaking the monotony of the days.

So what then?

A hobby you partake in nightly?

A few drinks over diner?

The fucking boob-tube?

Seeing your family?

Do you change the objective every day? Where Monday you can't wait to get home and have that steak with a few drinks and Tuesday its steel tip dart night. Does it get old searching for that limited pot of gold at the end of every work day?

How do you feel after that brief moment of satisfaction has passed? Do you immediately look to the next temporary fix as a way to cope with the existing boredom of a meaningless episode of glory that has just come and gone...again?

Or have you found the one thing that motivates you consistently on a daily basis?

I just get up, go to work and do whatever. I just go with things. I enjoy it that way.

Days I have my daughter, bottling day for homebrewing - (you get a good idea of what it will taste like once it's been conditioned), 3-4 day work weeks, Sunday nights at the Draught House in Austin with my best friends. But every work day, clocking out.

I try not to be a big picture guy. Coming home from work, hanging out with my brother and friends, smoking a bowl, drinking some Jamesons, things like that put a smile on my face. If I over thought it I would probably have to just end myself for being so unproductive outside of work.

LMAO I have this exact conversation with myself all the time... more frequently as each year goes by (27 now). I think about this a good portion of my day every day now. I still don't quite have the answer but the 8-5 is definitely getting mundane. Thursdays is definitely boob-tube night, though (NBC lineup followed by Jersey Shore lol).

Bigger picture, I splurged and bought a new car and that helped, but lately the thing that gets me and my wife through the grind is vacations. Frequent getaways to Dallas/Austin/Padre mixed in with at least getting out of state once per year. Went to Steamboat Springs, CO last month, plan on going to NYC in May and then a quick 3 nights in Vegas in October followed by a 10-11 day trip to Italy next year. Having those to look forward to really help. I'm making a real effort to make sure I enjoy life as much as possible this year after devoting so much time/effort to get to my current situation.

btw IH, regardless of what comes of our little youVSme thing, i do have to thank you for the motivation you gave me to pursue boxing. i don't think i have ever found such a thing in my life that has given me more pleasure. the people i workout with there at that gym are like family to me now and i look forward to getting in there and being part of that daily. it has brought me much joy in life and i am glad i finally found something i truly do love and strive to get better at.

Life isn't for wimps huh..

I find joy daily. I kinda like my job and what challenges it offers me and almost find joy in beating it everyday. Then to come home and be happy doing simple things as watching a good movie...Or playing with my son...getting a good video game..banging the wife when she feels like a freak lol. Kinda agree with mardigan you think of it to much...it sucks. Life passes by way to fast anyway. PLus there is always the bigger things to aim for...vacation... a new car..new house...etc. Dam Basics...what you on man?

Oddly enough, I find myself more and more liking "private" time...Some days I go straight from work to the ranch and other days I like staying after everyone else leaves work and just having a nice slow "end" to the work day as I organize notes etc. from the day. I always have cold beer in the ice chest in my truck and just like unwinding with a few brews at the end of the day. I'm not saying I don't like family, friends, pets, etc., just that I also do just fine being alone.

I'm 39 and life just seems to get better every week. Day to day I feel fortunate to have my family and friends, and I actually gain immense satisfaction from the work I've been involved in for the last 20 years.

My two main ideas that I go with are minimization and laughter. Don't get caught up in material objects, focus on getting joy out of the relationships you have-they'll last longer and provide more in life than any material object ever will (this includes the relationship you have with yourself). And find time to laugh every day, this world is a funny place and we're only here for a short time anyway. I find myself laughing every day at something while at work, home, wherever. It just continues to amaze me how each day, week, month, year just gets better and better. I sometimes think it'll stop and regress, but that's fleeting and the thought doesn't last very long.

For respiratory reasons, I've cut back lately, but in general, I live for marijuana. I make it through each day so I can get high and play video games/watch sports at night.

Cigs and other guilty pleasures don't even compare. Weed is the shit, when it comes to looking forward to something.

I also look forward to walking my dog each evening/morning. That's the closest thing I have to regular meditation.

It can really be tough when its like, Wednesday night at say, 7:25, isn't it? I mean, unless you're living a life that is non-stop thrills like Anthony Bourdain. The trick for me is; since I have dealt with a ton of loss in my life...seeing people close to me die and other forms of loss, I have came up with the idea that whatever may happen during say, a weekday, will be fun no matter what it is. I don't need much to keep me entertained though, so even sitting with my gf and conversing can make a day worthwhile.

Short term... sex, video games, and spending time with the people I care about.

Actually... funny you mention that. I'd always wanted a volcano, but couldn't, well wouldn't, afford it. $500? WTF is that shit?

A buddy of mine, just the other day had a stroke of genius and bought himself a Black & Decker adjustable heat gun for 35 bucks(200-1000 degrees F). Just using that to light the bong works like a charm. A hell of a lot better than some of the piece of shit vaporizers I've tried previously. Anyways, I'll have one of my own within a couple days. Good suggestion in general though.

there are a lot of things that get me through the week. on a day to day basis, i've got to go with family. that's the main thing. then there's finishing another day so the weekend is one day closer. what makes it easier is if there's a big game coming up or some kind of event. the holidays are great because there's so much to look forward to but when it's all over...like now...it does get a little depressing. what has really helped these last two years is my daughter. she's almost going to be 2 and she does something every single day and wows me and just thinking about her makes me smile. she's pretty much what gets me through every day.

Such a good answer...
Man. Until about 2 years ago I played so much ball and looked forward to it more than anything on earth. We tried to keep the group together after high school and made it about six years, but people grew up and got other shit to do. I'll be lucky if I play more than a meager handful of times in 2010 (sniff). :depressed

Treasure that shit while you still can.

Taking a shower when I wake up, my first cup of coffee in the morning, making job offers (and them accepting, of course), seeing my dog when I get home from work, and sleeping.

What about you, B2B?

Playing video games, reading about new video games, jogging in the park in my neighborhood, spurs games if they're playing, going to my college classes, playing with my dogs, talking to family, and finally getting super tired and going to sleep in my bed.

I don't need/want a lot of hubbub in my life. I crave quiet and solitude most of all. Crazy mornings getting everyone out of the house and then I can do my own thing at my own pace---housework, taking my dogs for walks, lunch with friends or even going back to bed and watching movies or reading all day. Then at 4pm it all changes because "they" come back and sitcom type shenanigans ensue until about 10:30pm. And suddenly it's over as fast as it began and I'm back to what I have looked forward to all day---peace and quiet :)

But as far as a specific event that highlights my life I'd have to say it's my oldest son's basketball games. He's always played on his school teams (he's at Reagan High now) and plays year round on various club/AAU teams. I would crawl out of my deathbed to get to one of his games :cheer

What keeps me going?

The people I love, getting to be with them. I love to read. I enjoy writing sometimes. I like chocolate. I like steak. I like cross stitch and knitting (though I've been on hiatus from both). I like just hanging out with SFIE. And the animals.

What keeps me going to work and slogging through on the bad days? Getting to keep our house and car and the little bit of extra for the things we enjoy - eating out, seeing movies, whatever.

And of course, trying to have a child. That takes up a fair amount of time and energy for me. I wish it were easier for us. I know the payoff will be worth it, if we can make it happen though.

Maybe it's different for me because I don't have to get up and go anywhere to work everyday, but I love life. I love hanging out and laughing about stupid stuff with timvp all day. I love reading books in bed, while timvp lays next to me working on the computer. I love writing and editing (most of the time). I love shopping for shoes...and stacking the boxes neatly on the shelves of my closet. I love experimenting with new eyeliner :lol I love looking back at all the things we have accomplished and endured, and looking forward to a happy future.

Lame? Maybe in some people's eyes, but I treasure life. Sure sometimes sucky things happen, but overall it's fantastic.

These are every day things:

Reading my "Encouraging thought of the day" calendar

Checking my e-mail.

Bo coming home from work.

The Simpsons on television.

Every week:
Church services

A full day off work ( because with two jobs it only happens rarely)

What gets me through my life is the fact that I have to do it. I am not independently wealthy, because if I were, I'd enjoy doing more than what I currently do now.

I'd take up writing, the guitar, excercising, etc.

Now?

Shit, I work more than most people you'll ever meet. 60 hours is like a vacation. All I know is work and home, work and home, work and home. Home is great, work fucking sucks.

So my answer to 'what gets you through it all'? My wife. She is a hyper-optimistic person who never respects you being in a bad mood. Never.

It sounds annoying, but seeing as I am her polar opposite, she keeps me seeing green when my eyes see nothing but gray.
