Marriage & Family Therapist Dr. Patricia Love (author of "Hot Monogamy" and "The Truth About Love") explains why some men are afraid of women.
1. Bottom line: women do not understand how important it is to a man to please the woman in his life.
2. His self-worth is in her hands. If she is unhappy, he feels like a failure. When a woman talks about her problems or unhappiness to another woman, this is an invitation to come closer. When a woman talks about her problems to her mate, he hears it as criticism of him.
3. At one time a man could feel secure because a woman was dependent upon him for economic security. This is no longer the case.
4. Words hurt. Women don't understand how threatening their words are and how their criticism can overwhelm a man. The man who looks like he is uncaring, withdrawn or stonewalling is often overwhelmed by a woman's demands and expectations.
5 Anger stays in a man's system longer. When he is angry cortisol is dumped into his system rapidly and it stays in his system for a long period of time.
Tips for women:
Accept the fact that the man in your life is not like your girlfriend.
Beware of your tone.
Make sure your voice is calm and kind.
Curb your criticism. It hurts more than you think.
Be more understanding of his need for time alone and a cooling off period.
Use appreciation generously and often.
