I like biathlon because of Magdalena Neuner, it's the only sport that I'll care about the results. Portugal and Denmark won't have strong competitors in any sport (I think).

Kostopoulos was a fan favorite here in Montreal (and Theodore as well, before we traded him to Colorado; I think Theodore comes from Theodoropoulos)

I dont know what Theodore's original name was. But he, as well as staios, stamkos and kotsopoulos all come from the Aegean part of Macedonia. They are Macedonians, but that part was annexed by Greece in 1912, after that period, the Greek government forced all Macedonian families to change their surnames into greek sounding surnames. That's why they have -os and -poulos in their names to make it sound like Greek names. They did that also to names of cities and villages. All Macedonian cities and villages were renamed into Greek names.

Stamkos original name is Stamko or stamkov but after 1912 they were forced to change it to Stamkos. Kotsopoulos was Kotso or Kotsov, after 1912 kotsopoulos etc....

Georgian luger has life-threatening crash

CTVOlympics.ca

By Kristina Rutherford, CTVOlympics.ca Posted Friday, February 12, 2010 12:35 PM ET

Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili had a life-threatening crash and was hurled off the track and knocked unconscious at one of the fastest points of the Whistler Sliding Centre on Friday during his second of two training runs.
The 21-year-old was near the bottom of the track on the final 270-degree turn when he hit one side of the wall, crashed into the other, and was thrown off his sled and over the wall. He appeared to hit a metal pole on the side of the track after he flew over the wall.
The accident occurred on the outrun of a turn named Thunderbird, where speeds approach upwards of 140 km/h.
Track medical staff immediately rushed to the scene, administered CPR and rushed him to hospital. His condition is unknown.
An air ambulance was seen en route.
Kumaritashvili was ranked No. 44 in the world after competing in five World Cup races this season.
Training was delayed after the accident and race officials say there will be a hold on the track. There will be more to follow on this as details become available.
Earlier Friday, reigning Olympic luge gold medallist [URL="http://www.ctvolympics.ca/countries/country=ita/athletes/athlete=3234/index.html"]Armin Zöggeler (http://www.ctvolympics.ca/countries/country=ger/athletes/athlete=3637/index.html)of Italy managed to walk away after crashing in his first run, but came back to complete a clean second run.
The two time Olympic champion and four-time medallist lost control in the lower section of his opening run, tearing down the track while holding on to his sled before coming to a halt. He stood up almost immediately after the crash.
Zöggeler was driven off in a medical vehicle, but returned for his second run, finishing in a time of 47.252 seconds.
Luge competition begins on Saturday with men's singles.

Meh, just kind of the way that sport works. I still remember when he got the silver in the 1000m at Salt Lake and Bradbury, the Australian, got a gold no one expected because he was alone in the back of the field and avoided a crash that took out the other five skaters a few feet from the finish.

Would he have missed the podium if the South Koreans had stayed on their feet? Sure. But he was also smart enough to stay away from the bumping instead of trying a risky pass.

Only 5 racers were shown in prime time of the Mens Downhill last night!

Hours and hours of figure skating and only 1/2 hour of the Mens Downhill.
Bad job of coverage by NBC. Commercials every 10 minutes.

I like the Snowboard Cross, action packed races.

The American men's hockey team looks to be ranked about where they should be (behind Canada, Russia and Sweden...maybe even behind Czech Republic and Finland, too). They are clearly less than 4th place, but in a single elimination tournament, anything can happen.

The Swiss have a good team with an awesome goalie (Hiller from Anaheim). Norway, otoh, has nothing.

Canada romped Norway, 8-0. Americans won pretty easily 3-1. The Russians were on too late for me on the east coast...when I turned it off, I think it was 3-0 after the 1st.

One thing to say...hockey without commercials is frickin awesome.

There are like ten NBC-affiliated channels providing Olympic coverage. NBC itself is going to have the big draws and more ppl watch figure skating than downhill. There is likely another channel providing superior Alpine coverage - check the NBC Olympic web site.

Less less commerical breaks compared to NHL games

The game itself has no commercial breaks, so the network showing it (in the case of yesterday's games; USA, MSNBC and CNBC) have only a limited amount of time in game to get a little 15 sec spot in.

I watched the US game on USA and there were zero commercials while inside a period of play. MSNBC (the Canada vs Norway game), otoh, found itself able to fit in little 15 sec commercials during an icing or penalty call (sometimes these commercials "stepped on" the play, but no biggie really). I didnt get a good feel for if CNBC, which showed the Russia vs Latvia game.

All in all, its commercial free when compared to what we're used to.

Winter Olympics - Norway's Bjoergen wins gold

Reuters - Thu, 18 Feb 02:34:00 2010
Buzz Up!

Norway's Marit Bjoergen easily won the women's 1.4km cross country sprint classic, capturing her country's first gold of the Games.

Bjoergen, a veteran sprinter, took the lead with about a third of the race left and crossed in three minutes 39.2 seconds, 1.1 seconds ahead of Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk.

Slovenia's Petra Majdic won bronze but deserved a special medal for extraordinary valour after conquering an excruciating injury over three races before painfully climbing to the podium.

"Today I won not only a bronze medal for myself, this is a gold with little diamonds on it," Majdic said. "I won a medal just getting to the start line."

The Slovenian, one of the pre-race favourites, plunged down a hill in practice but went on to struggle through two qualifying rounds and then finish third in the women's 1.4 km cross country sprint.

Majdic had hit a patch of ice on a corner and slid off the course during a warmup run earlier in the day.

"There was a big hole. I fell three metres. I fell on rocks. I broke one ski and both poles. I was screaming," she told a news conference, continuously wincing in pain.

"I was thinking, 'It's over,'" she said. "I thought it was over because I couldn't normally breathe or walk, or move."

The 30-year-old needed emergency medical attention for badly bruised back muscles and broken skin. Then she was told she should go to hospital.

"A part of me was screaming, 'I want to go to the start.' I didn't want to hear that I was finished," she said.

Majdic pushed herself through the pain barrier in the quarter-final and semi-final but ran out of stamina in the gold medal event, collapsing in a curled heap once she had captured Slovenia's first ever medal in cross-country.

The heroic achievement, and Majdic's clear state of agony afterward, overshadowed the gold medal-winning performance of Bjoergen.

Only after the final did Majdic agree to go to hospital, where an ultrasound exam revealed scrapes on her back, "a big punch on the muscles" but no broken bones.

Majdic, who walked gingerly into the post-race news conference with the help of an official, said it was unlikely she would race in Friday's 15km pursuit.

"I will try to focus myself for the 30km (on February 27). It's the only chance. All of the other races, no, they're gone because it's too painful," she said.

Bjoergen's gold was the first for Norway at the Vancouver Games and came as Norwegians were fretting about the lack of Olympic success.

Its weird seeing one person so far ahead of his peers in Olympic competition.

White's air alone was a good 5-7ft higher than everyone else's. I am not blind, however.

Halfpipe snowboarding is a very young sport, but he certainly dominates.

Really though, that was not worth the gold medal. First of all his whole routine was conservative. I mean if no risks and all reward is the new motto for ice skating gold then he did great, because he executed the fundamental jumps very well, but honestly that's something a junior skater can execute. It's just sad to see where this sport is going athletes like Plushenko who put their heart into it and go all in truly deserve the rightful recognition. Sports are supposed to evolve over time, not digress. I wouldn't be surprised if this gold medal victory started the era of the conservative 'dancers' for figure skating and the focus will be on the costumes and the 'graceful' choreography.

If Plushenko had skated cleanly, he still would have won, but all those little bobbles added up to just enough to lose.

I do agree, though, that skaters 8 and 12 years ago were doing harder routines, and that in this Olympics it was primarily the "old" guys still doing quads- like Plushenko, Lambiel and Joubert. Kurt Browning was doing quads 20 years ago, and maybe 5 guys attempted one. I give credit to the Japanese skater who at least tried one and risked it and still placed third. Evan was not going to try one again after he fell at Nationals.

That being said, I was happy for Evan because he works harder than everyone else.

Well said Lefty.

Canada isn't done. They're still too deep and talented to bow out yet, at least not to Germany. The Canada/Russia game will be a war.

I think Canada's problem may be having too much talent and not enough role players. I'm not nearly as well versed in hockey as many of you are so I could be wrong, but a few of those Canadian lines seem to under-perform every time out there, chiefly the Sharks heavy line (although Heatley has been very good). Thornton and Marleaux have sucked, IMO. Maybe the Canadian coach should play less guys and focus more on the combinations that work?

Also, Brodeur should be benched.

DarkReign
02-22-2010, 12:34 PM
You may not claim to know much about hockey, but you nailed Canada's problem.

Put Rick Nash on a line with Crosby and Iginla, and he'll try to get the puck to them for a nice touch goal every time down the ice.

Put Rick Nash on a line with Ryan Callahan and Chris Drury and he will be shooting the moment he gets over the blueline.

They play like an All Star team. Too many people trying not be selfish, hog the puck or do too much.

The entire Canadian roster is used to being THE guy their team(s) count on. The guy who always shoots, is always getting open to receive a pass, always looked at as an example.

Not the case in a short tournament like the Olympics. You need a playmaker, a finisher and a grinder (so to speak, anyway). All they really have is finishers who cant finish right now. Joe Thornton is their main playmaker and he is a career choke artist. Crosby would be their second playmaker...he was on the ice for 3 even-strength goals against. He ended the night -3, with a goal on the PP late.

Brodeur did the team no favors, but he didnt lose the game for the Canucks.

Miller, obviously, was the best player on the ice. But he didnt score 5 goals for the Americans and Brodeur did not let in 5 bad goals. The vets on the team really stepped up for the Americans (Langenbrunner, Drury, Rafalski..even Miller), whereas Canada's best players were under-25 yr old defensemen (Keith and Doughty).

When the game matters and the pressure is on, you want your vets leading the charge. Thats how history was written, thats how every military ever does it, thats how sport teams do it. It doesnt mean they score or win the game, it means they lead the charge...show the example of poise under pressure, heady plays and determination.

Thats what Drury did winning key faceoffs and killing those late powerplays in a penalty kill role. Active stick, lots of movement and anticipation, good reads and never leaving the late man open. Scored a key goal.

Thats what Langenbrunner did all damn game. Getting physical, clearing pucks, relieving the relentless Canadian pressure at key times and scoring a "off the skate" goal.

Rafalski needs no explanation. I dont what the fuck happened to the Rafalski that left Detroit to go play in Vancouver, but please do not send that Rafalski back. I'll take the one playing right now, thanks. He has been the American's best player...he might be the best player in the tournament so far.

This is what I am talking about. Rafalski is (literally) the gray beard of this American team. People, like me, thought he would play a small part, that this is a transition year for American hockey, leaving all the vets behind (Modano, Hull, Tkachuk, Hatcher, Richter, etc) and going with a youth movement.

Rafalski steps up and is having the tournament of his life. His swan song on the international stage, if you will. This guy is playing excellent defense and he is scoring goals at a clip no one but Alex Ovechkin can keep pace with...as a defensemen.

You want your veterans leading the charge. The American vets are doing that. One might argue the Canadian vets are the biggest liabilities to the team.

Pronger, Neidermeyerererer, Brodeur, Thornton (i actually think Thornton has been pretty good, but being beat like a bitch by Brian Rafalski has me including him)...these are Canada's culprits, and they are their vets.

Obviously, I am stoked the Americans won the game and even more stoked that they finished #1 overall heading into the elimination round (thanks Sweden!). Its a welcome surprise but really, it doesnt mean shit unless they medal.

Moreover, Canada could easily pull their shit together overnight. they have so much talent and so much leadership..so many championships up and down that roster....

Honestly, I'll be shocked if Canada doesnt pull it together and get to the gold medal game.

Because really, the Canadians outplayed the Americans overall. At no point in that game did the Americans "dominate" play for longer than one shift. Whereas the Canadians would go minutes of total, epic domination. Looked like a goddamn powerplay out there 5-on-5 most of the time. Fucking Canucks...

Just a great, great game. One of the best games I have ever seen...tremendous end-to-end hockey.

If you dont like hockey, or have never given it a chance, I implore you to watch this tournament. There is no finer example in the universe of this beautiful sport.

Hockey is best played in the Olympics. I don't care much for NHL except for a playoff round or two every year, but the Olympics are great Hockey. I'm actually glad the olympics are geared more to women and that the hockey is on Msnbc. That means not much commercial interruption and a great, clean telecast with hockey but not all the extra marketing bullshit.

Love me some DR - excellent and informative post as usual.

This tournament has been a blast to watch, and will very likely cause me to start paying a lot more attention to the NHL. I think that many other Americans will as well. Some of the rules changes have made the NHL game a lot more exciting, and their (NHLs) refusal to tone down or eliminate the fighting means it will continue to be one of the most brutal games on the planet. It's fantastic to watch in person (to me, second only to world-class level soccer) and with the advent of HD is now almost as good to watch on TV.

As for the American team, I think those guys are saying the right things and seem to have the proper mentality to make a deep run. They realize it was just the beginning of what will be a minefield of outstanding teams along the road to a potential medal. It's great to see these young guys playing physical, scrappy, and fearless hockey.

I like how some of the US players mentioned the 1960 team, as well as the 1980 team. Great to know that these young guys are aware of their history.

IMO, the team that's the most fun to watch is the Russians. Relentless is the term I would use to describe them. And what about Ovechkin murdering Jagr? Good stuff! I really think the Russians will win it all, but it would be sweet if it could be a USA/Russia GM game, with the US pulling it out.

Dude, what happened to Iginla? Was it that long ago that the guy played like Hell on wheels? He isn't the same guy I remember from those playoff battles a few years ago. He's playing like a watered down Heatley IMO.

As for the playmaker, finisher and mucker comment it's spot on. Toews, Morrow and Heatley I think only played a shift together and it produced excellent cycling that resulted in a goal.

Weber, Keith and Doughty played extremely well last night. Their forwards staying to the outside on the D point shots helped Miller. That wasn't a terribly difficult 40+ save night for Miller. Canada made it easy on him and as a RW fan I've seen that game at least 50 times in the last 15 years.

And DR, are you enjoying the HF meltdown as much as I am?

Canada probably feels embarrassed about losing to America. Their roster is stacked with some of hockey's best players. They have freakin' Brodeur as one of their goalies going up against Ryan Miller. I give props to Miller. He's played great.

The problem with Canada?

Lack of speed; especially against Euro teams.

Yzerman and Babcock wanted a big, intimidating team, but this isn't the NHL.

They didn't select Phaneuf because he takes too many penalties; well, guess what, Pronger has taken 2 dumb penalties in the tournament so far: an unnecessary elbow and a WTF crosscheck

Lindy Ruff wanted smaller, faster skaters, like Martin St-Louis and Steve Stamkos, but he is just the assistant coach

oh how I enjoyed this one! (Nordic Combined - Men's Team)
for whatever reason, Gold in a team competition always looks brighter than the single gold.
Austria defended their title from 2006. the great thing for us: back then they have been hotly favored and everyone expected the gold. this time a 3rd place would have been celebrated as a big success.
their best two, Gottwald and Stecher are pretty old already and Gottwald even came back from retirement for this season and the Olympic games.(he retired 2007 after one of the greatest careers in the history of the Nordic combined with 14 medals at Olympics and world championships)

and what a great race! congratulations also to team USA. what a fantastic fight!

The Gold Medal game will also be tape-delayed. With nothing else on or competing for the time slot.

It's how the west coast affiliates want it. Ebersol wants everything to show live, which is exactly what happens on all of their cable affiliates(MSNBC, CNBC, USA).

Here's DE on the Salt Lake Games:

I am emphatic that delaying our primetime Salt Lake coverage is a mistake, which is exactly what I told the affiliate board when they first brought this issue to my attention earlier this year.

It all comes down to viewership and money/ad revenue.

Shocking, right?

symple19
02-24-2010, 02:09 PM
Good info DLF.

I think affiliates would be surprised at the amount of viewers they would get if everything was shown live. The demos would change some(affecting ad revenue), but I just don't think the ratings would suffer all that much, especially considering the drivel that's shown on daytime/afternoon TV.

It shouldn't be hard to find the GM game on the internet anyway, and I loathe watching sports on a tape delay basis, so I believe that's the route I'll take.

The International Olympic Committee will investigate the actions of Canadian women's hockey players who celebrated their gold medal victory Thursday night by swigging beer and smoking cigars on the ice in Vancouver.

A number of players, including 18-year-old superstar Marie-Philip Poulin, were drinking alcohol on the ice following the team's 2-0 defeat of the United States. (The legal drinking age in British Columbia is 19.) Players lingered for more than 70 minutes after the awards ceremony reveling in the arena, which was empty except for media and arena staff. (Click here to view a slideshow of the celebration.)

Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, said that drinking in public was "not what we want to see" from athletes at an Olympic venue. The organization will investigate the actions and will speak with the international hockey federation and Canadian Olympic Committee and ask them to "act accordingly."

Steve Keough, a spokesman for the Canadian Olympic Committee, told the Associated Press, “We condone celebrations. … We don’t condone actions of irresponsibility. I think Canadians understand it’s quite an emotional moment for our team. It was not our intention to go against any IOC protocols.”

To be sure, the Canadian women's hockey team should have acted with more class and been a little more discreet with its celebration. But to do something drastic like ban the team from the Closing Ceremony or force them out of the Olympic Village would be an overreaction. In past Olympics we've seen steroids, political boycotts, cheating and judging scandals. A few puffs of a cigar hardly seems to be in the same league.
