Full-Court Press: What's 10,000 more points? (http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/Full-Court_Press_Whats_10000_more_points.html)
By Jay Nanda - Express-News
Of the NBA's 45 active members in the 10,000-point club, five reached that plateau this season. Two — Charlotte's Stephen Jackson and Phoenix's Amare Stoudemire — achieved the feat in the same game Saturday night. Those five have a long way to go to catch the six active members of the 20,000-point fraternity — soon to be seven once Tim Duncan scores another 15 points — or they may never get there. Here's a look at the guys they're trying to emulate, and their chances of reaching them:
Active
20,000-point club
Shaquille O'Neal
Points: 27,998
Year/teams: 18th — Magic, Lakers, Heat, Suns, Cavaliers
Place all-time: fifth
Next on all-time list: Wilt Chamberlain (31,419)
Kobe Bryant
Points: 24,970 entering Monday's late game
Year/team: 14th — Lakers
Place all-time: 15th
Next on all-time list: Jerry West (25,192)
Allen Iverson
Points: 24,247
Year/teams: 14th — 76ers, Nuggets, Pistons, Grizzlies
Place all-time: 16th
Next on all-time list: Patrick Ewing (24,815)
Kevin Garnett
Points: 21,712
Year/teams: 15th — Timberwolves, Celtics
Place all-time: 25th
Next on all-time list: Larry Bird (21,791)
Ray Allen
Points: 20,298
Year/teams: 14th — Bucks, SuperSonics, Celtics
Place all-time: 32nd
Next on all-time list: Mitch Richmond (20,497)
Dirk Nowitzki
Points: 20,102
Year/teams: 12th — Mavericks
Place all-time: 33rd
Next on all-time list: Ray Allen (20,298)
2009-10 10,000-point club
Dwyane Wade
Points: 10,977
Year/team: 7th — Heat
Path to 20,000: Very good — unless he and LeBron James team up to rule the world next season.
Gilbert Arenas
Points: 10,575
Year/teams: 9th — Warriors, Wizards
Path to 20,000: If justice is handed down, the NBA may not be around by the time he deserves to get out of jail.
Ron Artest
Points: 10,135 entering Monday's late game
Year/teams: 11th — Bulls, Pacers, Kings, Rockets, Lakers
Path to 20,000: Chances are inversely proportional to the longer he plays alongside Bryant.
Stephen Jackson
Points: 10,026
Year/teams: 10th — Nets, Spurs, Hawks, Pacers, Warriors, Bobcats
Path to 20,000: Port Arthur native may have the best opportunity of these five — scary considering his own brushes with the law.
Amare Stoudemire
Points: 10,013
Year/team: 8th — Suns
Path to 20,000: Given his past knee injuries, teammate Steve Nash has a better chance of running his fingers through his hair 20,000 times per game.
