View Full Version : An Open Discussion on the Politics of Fanhood

With the Super Bowl only three weeks away, one would think they have a pretty good idea of who's backing what team in this place. But unfortunately, that is not the case. There was a noticable upswing in NFL forum activity from Charger fans between Weeks 13 and 19, spanning the time between them becoming the Colts number one rival in the AFC and being eliminated by the Jets. Now we have the mother of all farces. After little to no activity whatsoever backing the Jets during the regular season, a one DarrinS has now posted three pro-Jets threads in the days following their upset of San Diego. It's been like two days dude. I step away from SpursTalk for a few days to catch up on the newest Batman comics, and I come back to a Jets bandwagoner? I honestly can't believe what I'm seeing. Or reading. However you want to put it.

I'm a pretty realistic Jets fan. I know they're probably not going to beat the Colts, and it's mostly because Peyton Manning can avoid the blitz like a pro. I like that Rex Ryan has the team believing they can win on the road and should be favored to, but there's a fine line between genius and lunacy, and he's stumbling around both sides of it like a drunk right now. The NFL doesn't work to where because the Chargers had beaten the Colts two years in a row, and the Jets just beat them, that they're better than the Colts. DarrinS is stupid to think that. I know nobody's picking the Jets and it'll be a big upset if they win, but how do you stop Peyton Manning? And they didn't do a good job on him in Week 16, in a game the Colts blatantly shortened the playbook.

Please. We're the Ravens with a better secondary and shittier quarterback, and the Colts just schooled those birds. Don't let DarrinS fool you into thinking the Jets have a legitimate shot at the upset. Peyton Manning has owned this kind of defense for the last decade, and he whipped its ass last week so hard he stopped trying to score on it because he knew Joe Flacco couldn't do anything. You think he's afraid of Sanchise?

So let us use this thread as an open discussion on the politics of fanhood. Is it right to wait until a team clinches to start talking shit to their opponents? Is it okay to jump on the bandwagon when the team is one game away from the Super Bowl? While the answers to these questions are both "no," feel free to discuss them anyway.

Look, dude, I'd like to think the Jets could run their way into the Super Bowl but I don't think they do it in that dome. Peyton Manning is too good.

Also, I take offense to the insinuation that I don't like Dallas because I'm racist. The second to last time I was in Dallas, I gave $10 to a panhandler who happened to be black. Not because of any white guilt or because I genuinely wanted to give him ten dollars, but he was rocking this cool ninja headband and I had to give the man props on a great fashion accessory.

As a matter of fact the last time I was in Dallas I went to a Mavericks game and the nice people of Dallas politely offered my beaner friend some yardwork jobs at the stadium. Quality folks.

I have to admit, it is pretty funny to see someone conveniently pop up in this forum the week their team Cinderella's its way to AFCCG.

You guys have called me out. I'm obviously just a bandwagon fan of the Jets, even though I've been watching them play since many of you were shitting diapers and probably since before some of you were born. (I can tell that because I don't know anynone my age who calls someone "brah".) I watched the Jets through the Richard Todd years, through the Ken O'Brien years, Freeman McNeil, Wesley Walker, Al Toon, etc. etc.

But, I'm probably not a "real" fan. I don't have some dumbass bumper sticker on my car. I don't have a giant "Fathead" sticker on any wall of my house. I don't paint my body and go out in sub-zero temperatures to prove a point. I haven't named my dog "Broadway Joe". My wife doesn't have a pink Sanchez jersey. I don't have some big dumbass flag outside my house (like my neighbor who suddenly put up a Saints flag). I'm not like that dumb fucking couple in Florida that named their twins "Brett" and "Favre" (look it up).

All I do is watch the games, which hasn't been easy to do in the last 40 years. So, call me a "bandwagon" fan if you want. I don't really care.

You're a real Jets fan. Props, brah. Sorry I ever doubted you. Still think it's a little bush league that the NFL forum has been here this whole time and the Jets have been relevant both at the beginning of the season and ever since Indy tanked on them allowing them to get back into the playoff picture. I know, I know... it's an NBA board. I guess that's a good enough reason for me as to why you couldn't have made a few posts cheering them on or celebrating the turnaround Ryan has led them on.

No, my good sir. I mostly talk football with the regulars at the bar I run in east Jersey and my friends and family. I haven't checked JI in a while and don't have an account there, but is it getting pretty live now that they're in the AFC championship?

DarrinS may not be a bandwagoner, but he sure is a frontrunner. Now that the Jets have won a couple of playoff games, here you are in the NFL forum with your pom-poms.

If you follow the Jets so religiously, surely you'd have posted more often when the Jets were less relevant. After all, Jets fans have overwhelming hatred for Pats fans, and we have several Pats fans on this forum (mono, DOK, bostonguy to name a few) who you could've talked smack to on at least the 2 times a year that the Jets and Pats play each other.

Either way, I predict that after this week we won't see you on this forum for a few years at least.

You'll have to forgive me for being somewhat excited for my team getting back to the AFC championship game for the first time since 1998. That was the year the "Dirty birds" beat the Vikings and, unfortunately, the year that John Elway's Broncos beat the Jets (on their way to back-to-back SB wins). In 1999, a lot of people predicted the Jets would go deep in the playoffs (Playoffs!?) or possibly to the SB, but Vinny Testaverde tore his achilles tendon in the first game of the season. The Jets have had their ups and downs in the last decade and a lot of bad luck, particularly at the QB position. I can relate to what Chargers fans are feeling right now, as Doug Brien missed two FG's in 2004 and the Jets lost to the Steelers 20-17. That was Big Ben's rookie year and they went on to win the SB that season.
