Voters pick LeBron, Kobe to lead East, West to Dallas
By Official release
Posted Jan 21 2010 7:20PM

NEW YORK -- Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, this year's leading vote-getter in the NBA All-Star Balloting program presented by T-Mobile with 2,549,693 votes, became the first player in balloting history to draw at least 2.5 million votes on three separate occasions. James is making his sixth All-Star appearance and will start for the Eastern Conference for the sixth time in his career. Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, the second leading vote-getter with 2,456,224, paced the Western Conference.

Through the 2010 NBA All-Star Balloting program presented by T-Mobile, fans worldwide were responsible for voting in the starters for the 59th NBA All-Star Game, which will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the U.S., and reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages. The game will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, before an expected crowd of more than 80,000 -- the largest group ever to witness a live basketball game -- on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010.

The starters for the East at guard are the Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade (2,327,550) and the Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson (1,269,568), the 2001 and 2005 All-Star Game MVP. Among active players, Garnett's 13th All-Star selection ranks second to Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquille O'Neal (15). Dwight Howard (2,360,096) of the Orlando Magic is the starting center.

Bryant, the youngest All-Star in NBA history in 1998, is making his 12th appearance and was the All-Star MVP in 2002 and 2007, and co-MVP along with Shaquille O'Neal in 2009. Bryant is joined in the Western Conference starting backcourt by the Phoenix Suns' Steve Nash (1,222,235). The Suns' Amar'e Stoudemire starts at center (1,824,093).

In selecting the reserves, the 30 NBA head coaches must vote for seven players within their conference, including two guards, two forwards, a center and two players regardless of position. Coaches are not permitted to vote for players on their team. After the coaches select the reserves, if a player is unable to participate in the All-Star Game, NBA commissioner David Stern will select a replacement. Reserves will be announced Jan. 28, on TNT.

This will be the second NBA All-Star in Dallas. The city also hosted the event in 1986.

In conjunction with All-Star Balloting, 2K Sports will give fans the opportunity to experience Dallas and the best of basketball by entering the NBA® 2K10 Sweepstakes for a chance to win a trip to NBA All-Star 2010 and have their likeness as a digitized player incorporated in next year's game, NBA® 2K11.

Iverson voted in; Nash, Duncan get All-Star spots

By BRIAN MAHONEY
AP Basketball Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Allen Iverson has been voted to start in the All-Star game, while Steve Nash and Tim Duncan made late moves to claim starting spots for the Western Conference.

Nash passed the inactive Tracy McGrady as the second guard, while Duncan disappointed Dallas fans hoping to see Dirk Nowitzki start by rallying past the Mavericks forward.

LeBron James was the leading vote-getter for the Feb. 14 game at Cowboys Stadium, becoming the first player to earn at least 2.5 million votes three times.

Joining James and Iverson as East starters Thursday were Miami guard Dwyane Wade, Orlando center Dwight Howard and Boston forward Kevin Garnett.

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was picked in the West along with Phoenix center Amare Stoudemire and Denver forward Carmelo Anthony.

I'm so sick of people pulling the "Dirk deserves it more" line. No he doesn't. How many of you people seriously follow the league or know about the game? Big deal if Nowitzki scores more, the reality is he scores less efficiently and doesn't impact the game in any other facet. Duncan, on the other hand, is still one of the five best players in the game and the best big man in the game hands down. He impacts the game in virtually every facet and the only thing Nowitzki has over him is range shooting. Having said that, they both deserve to start. Nowtizki should be the starting PF and Duncan the starting C.

That's the Mavs problem for not constructing a team with a legit go-to player on the perimeter. The bottom line is, save for possibly Bryant, I don't think there's a player in the league who has played with as much payroll on his team (not to mention, individual talent) as Nowitzki has the past ten years and what does the organization have to show for it? Nothing, save for one undeserving regular season MVP. Duncan has four championships, two regular season MVP's and three Finals MVP's and he didn't have the benefit of of a bloated payroll and oodles of individually talented players around him.

It doesn't mean much, but Timmy deserves it. You could argue the insistence on listing him as a PF cost Dirk a start, but I doubt it really matters to Duncan, Pop, or the Spurs what he's listed as this year. It was an issue before because, listed as a center, China would've taken the start from him...and Tim has deserved to start every ASG.

In the Spurs system he's one of 2 bigs, 2 wings, and a PG. I don't see why the NBA can't do the ballot that way. Then you get Dirk/Tim frontcourt, Melo/Kobe on the wings, and Nash running the thing. Who would dispute that?

Ho-hum: Duncan an All-Star starter (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2010/01/ho-hum-duncan-a.html)
By Jeff McDonald

Tim Duncan has been named an All-Star starter for the 11th consecutive season, surpassing Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki at the finish line to earn the nod at forward for the West.

The results were announced earlier this evening on TNT.

Duncan did not lead in a single tracking poll leading up to the release of the balloting results, surging ahead of Nowitzki by 63,691 votes in the past two weeks. The late push has to be doubly disappointing for Mavericks fans, seeing as the game is being played Feb. 14 in Dallas.

Duncan, 33, is averaging 19.8 points and 10.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game, and is in the midst of one of the most efficient seasons of his career. His 22.1 points per 48 minutes is the most since his first MVP season of 2002.

Earlier this season, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he believes Duncan would be in the MVP consideration this year if the team owned a better record.

In Dallas, Duncan will start alongside the Lakers' Kobe Bryant, Denver's Carmelo Anthony, and a pair of Phoenix Suns, Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire. The East starting five is comprised of Cleveland's LeBron James, Miami's Dwyane Wade, Boston's Kevin Garnett, Orlando's Dwight Howard and Philadelphia's Allen Iverson, a controversial selection.

Mavs fans need not shed too many tears. Nowitzki is a shoo-in to be selected as a reserve in a vote of the league's coaches.

I'm cool with Nash... Stat is a joke tho. Default winner.

It's too bad TD couldn't get the C spot this year and let Dirk start at PF, cause I like Dirk, and it would be great for him to start in Dallas... that said, if it's gotta be one or the other, it's gotta be Timmy... and I'm pumped that we got him in there.

If they could give it to the 5 most deserving guys, I think I'd go Kobe at PG (although I didn't vote for him once), Durant, Melo, Dirk, Timmy. That's a nice team!

Also sucks for guys like Rondo, Joe Johnson, Bosh, and Gerald Wallace... other than Bosh, none of those guys even got respectable votes... Instead they get to come off the bench for AI and KG. So weak.

I'm very happy.

Sadly I think that he's not going to win the NBA anymore. At the end of your career he can say that he was one more time all star. That's very important. It could be the best he can add to his curriculum this year along with his 20.000 points.

I'm from Spain. For me since I was a child in the late 80's the NBA All Star Weekend was the second most important event of the NBA behind the Finals because they were the only we can see live in the TV.

I know that's not the 90's or the 80's and the All Stars isn't the same.

Wow, I totally thought Dirk was gonna start. Great job by Spurs fans to get him in at the last second. I bet Mavs fans and Mark Cuban were pissed when they heard the news.

They are gonna boo the hell out of Duncan in Cowboys Stadium, and Timmy isn't gonna give a shit, lol. While the crowd is booing the hell out of him, he should wear his four rings on his hand while waving to the crowd smiling. I swear, he should do that! That would be the greatest moment in the history of life!

So much that you can't point to one specific thing. When you learn more about the game other than post-up, isolation or pick-and-roll, then come back and attempt to have a conversation with me.

Dude whatever, all this shows is Duncan has a huge edge playing in a one sport town with nothing else going on. Fans here in Dallas had Cowboys on their minds while you guys just the Spurs and All Star voting. Congulations on the results

That is a piss poor excuse. Are you saying fans in San Antonio weren't paying attention to the Dallas Cowboys? This is why Dirk lost To Duncan? Maybe it had more to do with Mavs fans assuming the inevitable. I think Mavs fan did little campaigning on Dirk's behalf to get more votes in. It's never over til it's over.

I don't really understand how somebody can say Dirk is CLEARLY having a better season..

PPG..Duncan 19.8 Nowitzki 25.5
eFG%: Duncan 54.6 Nowitzki 49.8
RB%: Duncan 19.2 Nowitzki 11.8
AS%: Duncan 18 Nowitzki 12.3
Block %: Duncan 4 Nowitzki 2.4
TO%: Duncan 10.6 Nowitzki 8

Offensive Rating: Duncan 119 Nowitzki 114
Defensive Rating: Duncan 100 Nowitzki 104
Win Shares: Duncan 6.3 Nowitzki 6.3
PER: Duncan 27.3 Nowitzki 23.3

Duncan has the advantage in pretty much every individual stat and he obviously plays better D..I used %s for some stats because it's more accurate and accounts for Duncan's low minutes..

Nowitzki obviously has the advantage in some areas too..he turns the ball over less despite a lot more minutes and usage..his supporting cast has been worse than Duncan's by a small margin this year, which means he has meant more to his team from a value standpoint considering that the Mavs have had the better record..

I don't really mind either of them starting, you can make the argument for both..Duncan kind of screwed Dirk here by making himself count as a "F" when he's clearly been a "C", which would have sent Stoudemire to the bench instead..

Mavs fans should have had a better turn out with the voting though, that's pretty bad when you can't vote your superstar when the ASG is in Dallas..

We'll take solace in the fact that while we're 2nd in the West, the Spurs are fading into irrelevancy with the brutal half of their schedule yet to be played.

I've never understood why Mavs fans act arrogant. Your team is a joke, period. The Spurs are playing like a joke, but have the potential to be better than that. I heard a stat the other day that the Mavs have trailed by at least ten points in a whopping (I think) twenty-two games this season. Basically, they've done what they've been doing for at least four seasons now, which is come from behind and eek out a win. In other words, they're pulling wins out of their proverbial ass. They're not actually outplaying teams, or winning many games in impressive fashion.

The Spurs did this in the first half of last season a lot and because of it they had an inflated record. There's only one problem with this: you know what happens to teams who do this? No matter how experienced or how good they are closing out games, eventually that record turns. It's the old story about playing with fire.

Despite all this, the Mavs are only 2 and 1/2 games up on the Spurs. Yet they're supposedly playing great and the Spurs are fading into irrelevancy. You'd think the gap would be at least double if that were truly the case. I'm not worried about the Mavs and here's why: If the Spurs begin to play to even 75% of their potential, they'll be looking at the Mavs in the rear view mirror.

There's nothing wrong with showing support to your player. Maybe they'll value Dirk more than we value Duncan next time.

Nothing was to stop the fans in Dallas from doing the same thing. It's not a question of morality, it's a question of devotion.

You act like Dirk had a million unique votes, GTFOH with that bs. Kobe/Lebron all these guys had the same people voting over and over to get their guy the highest number of votes.

I don't think it's that much to ask to put Duncan in what's probably his last starting lineup for the All-Star game of his career.

I mentioned this in the NBA Forum. I think it would be a nice gesture if Tim Duncan gave the start to Dirk in front of his own fans. Personally i think he might too, knowing Timmy. Duncan has earnt it and is equally as deserving as Dirk IMO, but it would be good to let Dirk start in front of his home fans.
