All-white basketball pro league proposed in the South not warmly received

A former wrestling promoter has proposed an all-white pro basketball league centered in Atlanta, with teams across the South. The idea, which could be a publicity stunt, is not being given a kind reception.AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Former pro wrestling promoter Don "Moose" Lewis has issued a news release saying he's looking to start up an all-white, Atlanta-based pro basketball league, but his proposal has not been warmly received.
Lewis said the he hopes his All-American Basketball Alliance will have a dozen teams in the South and begin play in June, the Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle reported.
"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," Lewis said in a statement.
Lewis said he was not starting the league with any anti-black motivation. "But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here's a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like," he told the Chronicle.
Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver said he "could not support in good conscience" support an all-white team.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted Thursday that the league has no Web site and efforts to reach Lewis at the phone number on his release were unsuccessful.
