See, I like both beer and wine very much. On most occasions, I like drinking beer. But the best things I have ever drank and enjoyed have been wine related.

I am not a big fan of liquor. I like mixed drinks, but I have not been able to acquire the taste for straight liquor like scotch or whiskey. I can take it in very small doses, but still cannot bring myself to drink any straight liquor and actually enjoy it (Vodka, Gin, Whiskey, Scotch...)

I used to go there a bit, but since Specs opened, it has been my #1 liquor store by far. Specs has everything World Market does, but it's usually significantly cheaper. For instance, Specs has this outstanding porter, Deschutes Black Butte Porter, for like $7.35 a six-pack while World Market's price is $8.99 or $9.99 (can't remember which). The only places I know with better selections are Hills & Dales and Central Market.

At first glance banana doesn't seem like it'd be a good flavor in beer, but in the Paulaner Hefeweizen it works very well (though wheat is the dominant flavor, since it is a Hefeweizen after all).

Exactly. I do like beer, but I prefer wine. I only really drink beer on hot summer days at the beach, it must be ice ice cold. Or when im in the Czech Republic I always get a nice Black beer. Black beer from there is very good.

Drinking warm beer actually isn't that bad IMO . . . as long as you don't pop any cold ones. The minute after you pop that cold one and get icy fluid in your belly, you can't stand another warm beer for the rest of the day.

Depends on the beer. Macro lagers have to be cold so you can't taste them. As an aside, death to frosty pints. Kills flavor.

I like them all but I have a pretty small repertoire of each. I like most white wines, not big on reds unless it's something real special to have with chocolate. I like very light beers so my staple is Corona Lt. I love going to breweries to try the lightest beers but especially like ones that brew hard cider---I love those. And liqour, I only like the clear ones gin, vodka, tequila; but I enjoy slow sipping amaretto or slivovitz.

If I know in advance that I'll be attending an extended drinking event I like to have champagne because I never have a hangover with that. :toast

I haven't tried the 60 Minute IPA yet. I was a little disappointed by the 90 Minute IPA after I liked their Palo Santo Marron so much, and definitely prefer the Stone Ruination, Stone IPA, and Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPAs. Not that it was bad by any stretch though, but I was hoping for something as good as Ruination for the price. I really want to try some of Brooklyn's stuff. I never knew Anchor made a porter; I'll have to try that one too.

Out of curiosity, where'd you do the make your own 6-pack?

For sure, and the selection is pretty solid. About 60 beers you can choose from and a lot of variety. Kind of expensive for a 6-pack, but like you said you get to try one of many and if you don't like a particular beer you are not stuck with 5 others that you don't want to drink.

I wouldn't drink any of those "extra cold." 50-55 degrees would be near ideal. As it warms up you should notice a difference in flavor. I'm not a huge fan of the Dogfish IPA's. They are continually hopped, in this case for 60 mins. Kinda muddies it for me. They are a really cool company though.

5) Anchor Porter
6) Pyramid Audacious Apricot Ale

You heard of/tried any of these?

Dude, I don't know if you're around the NE side, but if so, you gotta check Specs. Right now all their Sierra Nevada 6-packs are $7.26, all their Deschutes 6-packs are $7.25, and lots of others are the same too.

Don't live in SA anymore, but that sounds like a good deal. I have only had a few Sierra's, but can't remember which ones. I am just not a fan of hoppy beers yet. Every once and a while I can deal with it, but just have not been able to consistently enjoy them. I keep trying though. I thought the 60 minute was ok, but like I said, I am not a fan really.

I just have the porters and dark beers left from my 6 pack. I will let you know how they are.

ROFL - Hoppy beers are (IMO) the only real beers that exist. I'm tremendously sorry that you have to settle for piss on a regular basis

Fuck Sierras. Drink Lagunitas, Bear Republic, or Stone(i'm forgetting a few). Sierra is basically the equivalent of Budweiser here in Nor-Cal(IMO)

He brews it at his brewery, Freetail in SA. I haven't had it yet, but don't doubt it's good. His other beers certainly were when I went.

P.S. - Scott, you got some great word of mouth going around up here in Austin - people ask me if I've had Freetail and I always make sure to put in a good word. I overhear people at Austin Homebrew as well as the Draught House giving compliments all the time.

Thanks Lee. I know we've got a big group coming from all around the state this weekend for Barrel Aged La Muerta release. Should be fun. JB and Ed at Austin Homebrew always spread a good word for me. I admire the Draught House a lot, so it means a lot that they are saying good things too!

I tried Lagunitas IPA when I was in SF and thought it sucked. It's in no way comparable to Stone IPA, Stone Ruination IPA, Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, or even Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA (and I'm not even that big a fan of this last one). I don't even think it's as good as Sierra Nevada's Anniversary Ale. Calling Sierra Nevada Budweiser is ignorant as hell. Sierra Nevada makes many top-notch beers:

Sierra Nevada Stout is outstanding, and my #3 stout, behind Rogue's Chocolate and Shakespeare Stouts.
Sierra Nevada Porter is very good, and far better than Stone's Smoked Porter. Not as good as Deschutes' Black Butte Porter, but still pretty damn good.
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is incredible and the best pale ale I have ever had. It curbstomps Stone Pale Ale for sure.
Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale is one of the best beers I have ever had. It reminds me a lot of Arrogant Bastard.
Sierra Nevada Harvest Wet-Hop Ale is a really cool brew IMO, that tastes completely different when you put it on the tip of your tongue vs drinking it down.
Sierra Nevada Torpedo is a very good IPA that delivers the hard-core hops I'm looking for when I want an IPA. It's a great second choice when I don't want to spend $15 for a 6-pack of Ruination but still want something with a strong kick in the ass.
Sierra Nevada Celebration is a very good IPA. I'll generally pick Stone IPA or SN Torpedo over it for the same price, but I still really like this beer when it's on sale.

Stone is definitely my favorite brewery based on the strength of their two year-round IPAs and Arrogant Bastard, but SN isn't that far behind. The only Sierra I ever had and didn't like was their wheat, which was bland and has since been thankfully retired.

Isn't there a bunch of different Stone IPA beers? I can easily grab one a Central or World Market.

It takes me a while to develop tastes. I hated darker beers for the longest time, but now they are my favorite. Just sort of happened over time. I kept trying them slowly but surely and then one night I ordered one and it tasted amazing. From there on out I started to really enjoy many of them.

There are two that can usually be found: Stone IPA and Stone Ruination IPA. Central Market carries both whenever you're in SA. I don't think World Market carries the Stone Ruination IPA, but I have seen Stone IPA there every time I went. The Ruination is quite a bit hoppier than the Stone IPA, and they're both excellent beers. I wasn't much of an IPA fan either until I tried Stone IPA (at leemajors suggestion).

I'm sure wheat beer's just a few steps away from treading back into Mike's Hard ______ territory, but I just LOVE the stuff. I'll hafta try Paulaner's. I'm not a big hops guy, so I'm assuming I should stay away from the IPAs, but I AM a fan of the darker* beers. DPG...suggestions?

Paulaner's Hefe-weizen has a pretty strong wheat flavor, and also has a bit of a banana taste added to it too. Weird-sounding combination I know, but I think it works pretty well. At least, the wheat flavor is more pronounced in it than in the other hefes I have tried like Shiner, Pyramid, a bunch of different Sam Adams' wheatbeers, and Sierra Nevada's original wheat (now retired).

Lots of good beer advice in here.

Looking for some advice that might help me take the next step to enjoying a wider variety of beer. I seem to have been stuck in neutral for a few months and haven't found anything I enjoy.

I'll start out with the basic stuff that I really enjoy....Shiner, Guiness, and Newcastle. I've recently tried and liked Arrogant Bastard, Maredsous 8/10, and Stone Pale Ale. I bought a sixer of Ruination IPA and didn't like it at all.

I went to Freetail and tried two of his flavored porters and the rye wit and didn't like them at all. I'll just drink the regular freetail ale.

Any ideas on what beers I should go and try from here? Should I just accept that I'm more of an ale guy and that's that? Keep in mind that I'll still drink something like miller lite and don't think it tastes like piss.

As for the SN Celebration, yeah that's it, and I highly recommend it also.

D'oh, Spec's (in SA, not the Austin one) didn't have the OG when I went there tonight; maybe it sold out quickly or something. They do have six-packs of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot though, which made my day since Bigfoot 2009 is one of my 3 or 4 favorite beers, right there with Ruination IPA, Arrogant Bastard, and Rogue Chocolate Stout.

I picked up a bomber of Racer 5 IPA too, but after trying it, I have mixed feelings. The flavor is very smooth, but I feel like the hops are kind of drowned out by the sweetness. I don't think it'd beat out Stone, Stone Ruination, or SN Torpedo in my list of top 3 IPAs.
