Tony Parker hopes his sprained left ankle isn't as bad as it first appeared. He told teammates that he didn't expect to be out long. He sat out Friday's game against Memphis and will miss Sunday's game against Denver.

Parker, the Spurs' second-leading scorer at 17.1 points a game, sprained his ankle on the same foot in which he's been dealing with plantar fasciitis.

"Hopefully, he won't be out too long," reserve G Roger Mason said. "He's in good spirits and it's not too swollen, so it won't be too many games." Parker missed his fifth game of the season, all because of ankle issues.

I know this is a part of a post which has been posted on another thread on here, but it's about Parker and his situation;


When the Spurs board their charter plane this afternoon, bound for the opening game of this year's rodeo road trip Wednesday at Sacramento, point guard Tony Parker is expected to be with them.

When he might rejoin his teammates on the court, however, remains uncertain.

Team officials expect Parker, who has missed the past two games with his latest left ankle sprain, to play at some point on the trip, an eight-game trek that straddles the All-Star break and concludes Feb. 21 at Detroit. There is no specific game targeted for Parker's return, but the prevailing belief is he will be back sooner than later.

The Spurs are 1-1 during Parker's most recent absence and 3-3 overall. Parker, a three-time All-Star and an All-NBA selection last season, has been struggling with injuries this season, including a bout of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

He is averaging 16.9 points and 5.8 assists, while shooting 48.7 percent from the field. All of those numbers represent a significant decline from last season.

Well, why are we posting updates and news to the forum, even though we can also go to news sites straight away? :wakeup

I always like to see news and updates being posted on this forum and I think others may like it too. Every now and then TP writes something on his facebook, especially about his situation and someone opens a thread about it, to inform the rest who do not visit the facebook page. Back in the competition after a week away, Tony lost in Portland.

Tony, you returned but you lost in Portland, 96-93…
It’s a big disappointment because we played really well. We led by 10 points in the last quarter. But we turned too many balls over and that was it. Portland played better than us at the end. It was a big opportunity and we didn’t catch it.

The team now stands 6th of the Western Conference.
Just look at the standings and you’ll understand how important the last 30 games are going to be. New Orleans is now 11th and can still play the playoffs. We played several home games since the beginning of the season. As we lost 10, we now have to win road games. That’s why losing in Portland is a big disappointment especially when we were so close. This kind of games can weigh at the end of the regular season.

After a week away because of an ankle injury, you played 30 minutes in the Blazers game (18 points, 6 assists). How did you feel?
I felt good in the 1st half but in the second one, my ankle was sore. I played 10 minutes. But I think Gregg Popovich didn’t intend to make me play 30 minutes. That also why I was on the bench at the end.

You’re playing the Clippers tomorrow, the team lost its coach last night…
I read Mike Dunleavy had quit. You never know how the team will react. But we shouldn’t pay attention. What’s going on at the Clippers’ is not our business. We have to make it up after Portalnd’s loss. We have a week ahead of us before the All Star break. So we have to play hard and win our games even though we’re playing the Lakers and Denver on the road.

Nicolas told me he was recovering pretty well from his shoulder injury. He can play. Anyway, it’s a hard time for all French players. Joakim Noah has a sore foot and won’t play for 10 days. Agreed,I think Tony is just thinking short term. I believe he just wants to help this team through this slump right now but isn't thinking of how much more rest could help him for the rest of the season.

Tony Parker : « I said a few weeks ago that I was hoping to be done with injuries. Unfortunately,fate decided otherwise. This hand injury is happening at the worst time. I had just started feeling better and better for a few days. The first exams yesterday showed a fracture of the 4th metacarpus of the right hand. The doctor in Memphis said it would be from 4 to 6 weeks away. I am now waiting for the diagnosis of a hand specialist in San Antonio. I’m going to fly home. I have an appointment tomorrow. If everything goes well, I’ll be back for the 1st playoffs game. But it’s a difficult time. I’m having a rough year as far as health is concerned. Abductors, arch of my foot, ankles, hip and now my hand. It’s a lot to deal with for one person. »

Excellent news, and we indeed need him back as soon as possible, but we should not get excited too fast though and Parker or pop shouldnt make any rushed decisions.

For the 1st time in his playoffs career, Tony started the game on the bench. He tells us about the defeat in Dallas.

Once again ranking ruled in Game 1, Dallas won at home 100-94…
We have to give some credit to Dallas. They fought for this victory. We put them in difficulties the whole time. They can thank Dirk Nowitzki and Caron Butler anyway. They both did a great game. We had the hardest time stopping them. Besides that, we turned too many balls over (17). In these conditions, we can be sorry for ourselves.

What did you lack to win ?
A little more success in the middle of the 3rd quarter because we were leading by 1 point . We had 2 or 3 balls to be really ahead but we didn’t make it. We could have made a break at that time. This defeat hurts also because we did exist.

As you told us before, you played in this 1st game. What’s your analysis ?
It’s a brand new situation for me, and so I tried to do my best bringing energy and being present offensively.

How does it feel to be a VIP 6th man ?
(Laugh) You feel like you’re Manu (Ginobili) Junior ! Seriously, it took me some time to get used to it and find my rhythm. But I think my game was ok. I’ll do everything I can to meet Gregg Popovich expectations until I have no more energy left. I have to be even more aggressive.

Yes it’s true, George had a tough game. I haven’t talked to him yet but maybe his ankle hurt. But we definitely need him to beat Dallas.

No. With Manu in the 5 it’s impossible. “Pop” has always wanted to have a player bringing offensive skills when he gets on the court. It will be my part in the playoffs. Now we have 3 days to prepare next game. We must win. We can’t go back to San Antonio with a 2-0. If it happens, we’ll have pressure on our shoulders.

This thread makes it very very clear that Tony Parker's life is going pretty darn well. He gets to do cool stuff and hang out with the beautiful people. Oh no!! I just realized my life sucks compared to Tony's. Oh well, I'll get over it.

He's come a long way from that French kid that showed up in SA nine years ago - has it been that long?

I do recall that on draft night when no one had heard of Tony, he was very excited about coming to San Antonio to play with Timmy D and David Robinson. He turned out to be the 1st or 2nd best player in that 2001 draft even though he went 28th.

I hope TP can stick around SA long term, but that may not be possible. The Spurs do seem to be building their roster back up with young guys right now.

Pop probably will (and should) test it out in one or two of the regular season games, but Blair probably wouldn't start in a playoff series against the Lakers. I've got to believe that if the Spurs play the Lakers or the Mavs, McDyess is starting for sure.

Since Blair has no chance at adequately defending Gasol, what Pop should do is put Duncan on Gasol (Duncan ends up guarding him a lot anyway) in order to neutralize him and Blair on Bynum. Blair's bulk should be a better served guarding Bynum, who's a more limited offensive player than Gasol. He'd still struggle, but it probably wouldn't be as pronounced. Also, there's a chance the Lakers could get lured into trying to take advantage of that match-up almost to fault, to where Gasol isn't getting enough touches.

Pop is going to have to get creative to play Blair against the Lakers. Here's another match-up I'd like to see: Blair on Artest, as opposed to Odom and have Jefferson guard Odom (I'm talking in brief stretches, not as something to rely on for significant minutes). Although with Blair's improved quickness, he should be given a shot at guarding Odom again before going to this. Gasol, there's no point.

After a month of silence, TP is back on the net.

Tony, how do you analyze the 24/3 of the first part of the season ?
It’s the first I make such a good beginning of season with the Spurs. It is anyway the best in the Spurs history. Usually, we start slowly before getting a move on at the end of February after the All Star Game. But we talked about it in October during our training camp. We said we had to make a good start in order not to chase victories and ranking. It was our problem last year, we started badly. It was difficult to make it up later in the season. So far, we are keeping our goals. And, most importantly, we have more home games. So it is important to win at the ATT.

How do you explain the Spurs success today ?
We play like we did last year.The only difference is that the whole is in a good shape, which was not the case last season. It changes everything. Besides, Richard Jefferson is at his best, the bench is successful, like Gary Neal yesterday vs Phoenix (22 points). Gary is a good draft. Gregg Popovich knew immediately it was him at the Summer League. He ‘s making a very good start. But sometimes, it’s Matt Bonner, McDyess, Hill…

Could you break Chicago’s record of 72/10 ?
No, it’s impossible to reach. The Bulls’ record will remain unbreakable for a long time. It’s huge.

Do you think about the title ?
It’s been the same thing for years. When you’re a Spurs, you play to win the title. Even last year but with all our problems, we couldn’t play our cards. But you have to go step by step. The most important is to win games and improve to go all the way to the playoffs.

What’s your personal balance after 27 games ?
I feel great. I got my legs back. I’ve known a pretty difficult time in November regarding my private life. But I got back on the horse, I had to be at my best for the Spurs. And it paid back : I was the best Western Conference player of the week. I’m very happy, it shows I’m in good shape.

Are you satisfied of your 18 points average, (50%) and 7 assists ?
I wish I went on like this. When you play in San Antonio, you share the ball with Duncan, Ginobilior Jefferson. You can’t shoot 25 times per game, it’s impossible. I’ve had 50% scoring for years, I don’t want to go under this percentage. As for assists, it is thanks to Manu, Richard or Matt scoring success. That’s how I reach an average of 7 assists. Unlikely some people may think, my assist figure hasn’t improved, I just have a better reading of the game.

San Antonio has played on a half court for years and has now totally changed its game becoming the 4th best offensive team of the League. Do you enjoy this game system ?
Of course, but there’s one important thing to keep in mind. You have to play defense to win. You don’t win because you play offense. And it’s been true for years. So we’ll have to improve our defense if we intend to be in the first places of the regular season. We are aware of the importance of the floor advantage in playoffs.

Are the Spurs in the favorite teams to win the title ?
Yes, but the Lakers and Boston are before us. The Lakers are champions so they are candidate to their own title. I put Boston second because they’ve always been there for years. They play really well. And then the Spurs.
