Colts Pro-Bowl defensive end Dwight Freeney has a torn ligament in his right ankle that will make it difficult for him to play against the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV, a source familiar with the injury told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Despite the fact that Colts president Bill Polian has predicted that Freeney will play, there are serious questions about whether he will. Even if Freeney can, the question then becomes how effective he can be.

Freeney, who has been in a walking boot all week, flew to South Florida on Friday to begin a battery of treatments for the ankle. Freeney has used a hyperbaric chamber this week to help heal, a technique he often uses to try to heal from injuries quickly.

Freeney is also using a device called ARP that is similar to a stem device to move the blood supply to the damaged ankle. The ARP operates differently than normal stem devices, but ARP has helped him in past years recover quickly from groin and hamstring pulls.

The Colts are maintaining that Freeney has a low ankle sprain, not a torn ligament, and that he is still questionable for the Super Bowl.

However, Freeney's ankle is said to be heavily swollen. The torn ligament is on the outside of his right ankle, which will make it difficult for him to pivot and use his whirling-dervish pass moves to get to Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Freeney injured the ankle pulling up in an effort to not hit Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez late in the fourth quarter of the Colts AFC Championship Game win. Freeney didn't hit Sanchez, but he did injure himself.

Freeney will continue undergoing treatment all week with the hope of playing. But if the Colts do not have Freeney, they will be missing their top defender, a player that tied for third in the league this season with 13.5 sacks.

Uh.... they're in the Superbowl. It was the right call.

The fuck do you care about a regular season game now?

What happens if they play all their starters in those two games and Peyton gets blindsided, or hit like Theismann?

Do you really care about two meaningless regular season wins when you're in the Superbowl in less than a week? You're a Spurs fan. You should know better than to care about the regular season.

I've cared all along. I've never thought they should've thrown away those 2 games. But then you already knew that.

And yes, they're in the SB...and yet, Freeney might not play because he's injured. The point is, he got injured whether they threw away those games or not.
They should've played to win them.

Oh, and throwing away regular season games in the NBA is far less important than in the NFL. 82 vs 16. Big difference.

"No one beats the Saints in a shootout" :lmao

After 10 years of people saying no one beats Manning in a shootout, your dumb ass thinks Brees can? What a tool. Colts secondary is best in the league. If any team can beat the Saints in a shootout, the Colts can. That last sentence does not work the other way around.

I also think Raheem Brock crominates filling in for Freeney, if Freeney doesn't go.

Saints secondary is much more intimidating. With studs in Gay(also a former Patriot) and Sharper, they will make the plays needed to win. That Saints offense is flat out amazing. They are so lethal, that you don't want to play a high scoring shootout with them. They are just too good. If Freeney can't be effective, that makes it so much easier for the Saints O line. They can just double Mathis and Brees will have ALL DAY to pick apart that Colts average secondary.

I don't hate Manning nor the Colts like I did back in the day(Mostly because I was a HUGE HUGE homer).Hell I rooted for them when they played the Bears in the superbowl. In fact I am a HUGE fan of Manning believe it or not. The Colts have a good group of guys on their team. I rooted for them against the Jets. I hope I am proven wrong Sunday. Honestly, I really don't want the Saints to win but I am preparing for it especially with Freeney out. If this means Manning>Brady so be it. I can accept that. Manning is a GREAT QB.

Not in my book. If he fails to win Sunday, I can't put him over Brady. If the Colts are that damn good, they will win Sunday. If Peyton Manning wants to be over Brady especially when it comes to the playoffs, he will have a great game Sunday. If the Colts D is that damn good, they will make plays.

You're an even bigger tool than I thought if you think the Saints can just double Mathis and magically not have to deal with a pass rush. What about safety or linebacker blitzes? Raheem Brock will start in Freeney's place if he can't play, and Brock is a pretty beastly dude even though it sounds like only Colts fans and Ray Rice know who he is.

And Manning just played the greatest game of his life against the #1 pass defense in the NFL. Do you really think this crappy Saints secondary can pull an '03 Pats on him? I mean, not that '10 Manning wouldn't be able to shitstomp the '03 Pats, I'm just saying this Saints defense isn't even close to being that good. And Gregg Williams has pretty much already said he's going to blitz the fuck out of Manning, who may be the best ever against the blitz.

Bottomline is you're overrating the fuck out of the Saints defense if you think the Colts couldn't hang with and eventually beat them in a no-one-plays-defense game.

+1 Brady knew what the coverages were going to be. That's pretty dang helpful.

I always wondered after Belichick said he 'didn't know it wasn't allowed' why no one asked him "So did you use this tactic during your Super Bowl games? Why wouldn't you use such an effective tactic if you thought it was OK?" Bill either has to admit he used it during the Super Bowl wins (and tarnish them) or say he didn't use the tactic then and belie his earlier statement that he thought it was OK (though, honestly, everyone already knows he was telling a bald-faced lie anyway).

First off, you said coverage. Any decent QB can read the coverage before the snap. So get your wording right, dipshit.

Second, find one shred of evidence that proves the Patriots taped defensive signals with the intent of telling Brady exactly what the defense is doing. Find one piece of real evidence proving it.

and who have you played that has an offense as good as the Saints? I think you are overestimating your defense. the colts played 3 quality offenses this year (cards, texans, and patriots) and none of them had the running and passing game of the Saints. No, the Saints haven't played anyone as efficient as Manning, but there is a larger gap in my previous thoughts than in the latter, imo. not to mention the texans and patriots games were very close.

It's even more amazing your best defense for the Patriots royally raping the Colts during their superbowl run is that they supposedly had video of what the Colts were going to do, a claim you have no evidence to support.
