i dont know... though i dont agree with it i also dont agree with punching a hole through a cows ear or any livestock either, let alone branding their ass too. seems a bit hypocritical if you ask me. it's only animal abuse if it's a domestic animal huh? fuckin' dumb!

There is at least a purpose to tagging and branding livestock, though.

The better analogy here would be the practice of docking the ears and tails of certain dog breeds for purely aesthetic reasons.

I've always wondered that too. All my friends had pierced ears when I was a kid but I wasn't allowed to have it done until I was 13 and paid for it myself. My kitty has yet to be pierced ;)
