Yesterday's kerfuffle about NBC's Black History Month menu seems to be devolving into a Saturday Night Live–worthy farce about liberal racial oversensitivity. To recap, yesterday Leslie Calhoun, a cafeteria cook, prepared a menu featuring collard greens, fried chicken, etc., in honor of Black History Month. After a picture of the menu was tweeted by Roots drummer Questlove, the Internet became inflamed with racial indignation. NBC apologized, also via Twitter, which incidentally is the whitest medium ever, and the cafeteria took the sign down. Today, the Post talked to Calhoun, who is black and, frankly, offended that people got so offended.
She'd been agitating to do the menu for the eight years she'd worked there, she said. "I thought it would go over well." But:
"The next thing you know, people were taking pictures of the sign and asking all the other black people in the cafeteria if this was racist. They said that it wasn't." That's awesome. Especially since the black population at NBC is only around 11 percent countrywide (http://www.mije.org/richardprince/nbc-stations-lead-management-diversity), and so we imagine everyone bombarding like the one guy who happened to be in the cafeteria with questions, like, "Hey, black person. Don't you think that's racist? Aren't you upset? Don't you think you should be? I mean, you understand why this is offensive, right?" The last, by the way, is the question NBC's The Grio (http://www.thegrio.com/) put to Calhoun in their online video interview with her about it today. To her credit, she stuck to her guns.* "Actually, I don't. I don't understand it at all," she said. "It's not trying to offend anybody. It's not trying to suggest that's all that African-Americans eat. It's just a good meal. And the display was really nice, I thought."

Forgot the Kool-Aid. Seriously, that looks like a pretty badass lunch, except for the jalapeños in the cornbread.

Jalapeno cornbread is awesome. I do one with jalapenos, corn, and bacon that kicks ass.

Cornbread stands on its merits alone for me. Putting a bunch of extras in it sounds like putting A1 on a good strip steak or sauce on a brisket.

Since this is a black people thread, I am asking for help:

Anyone reemember that movie from the early 90's or late 80's about training black actors. I think a white director asks a black actor can he can "any blacker"?

You must like the "sweet" cake style cornbread then. Texas style cornbread is perfectly complemented by jalapenos and pinto beans.

The whole "Dont you know this is racist?!?!" comments people made is the stupid part. Stop being so politically correct you must form other people's opinions for them (while letting others do the same to you)

I hate that sweet cornbread.

Well, that's not true. I actually kind of like the flavor, but it's not really what I consider cornbread.

I made cornbread a couple weeks ago that was a heart attack waiting to happen, but heaven. Batter had buttermilk and it was cooked in a cast iron skillet with bacon grease. Fucking orgasmic.

:wtf man give me a chance here. I've been having major connectivity issues with my wi-fi. Every page takes so long to load they time out and then when i get back my posts are gone or double posted. I've kept up pretty well so far, but now i'm giving up and calling TimeWarner to remove any trace of AT&T from my house

I like how sensitive people get over the connotation of fried chicken and other soul food. I enjoy both my Asian background and my Hispanic background's culinary designs. I get all happy when I see a noodle dish being offered at the cafeteria here at work...but I don't find the fact that they're serving it under the guise of Asian-Pacific Islander Month to be any bit racist. However, the little slanty-eyed guy in the rice farmer's hat that adorn the take-out boxes does get me up-in-arms... ;)

So among NBC's many bungled decisions we can now add "putting Fuzzy Zoeller in charge of the cafeteria" to the list.

White people are just upset because they don't know what their "food" is. They want to put a stop to it because they feel left out. being half Ugandan and half Czech myself I am not the least but offended.
