.500 record in the playoffs sinks Manning.

And for those submarining the Colts D, they held the Saints O under their scoring average, had a crucial goal line stand and held the Saints to 33% on 3rd down.

Garcon dropped a couple ones that he should have caught too. But I guess that's Peyton's fault in the minds of the haters.

DUNCANownsKOBE2
02-08-2010, 01:53 PM
There's no specific person to blame that game on. Peyton fucked up, but lets say Garcon catches that wide open 3rd down drop and that turns into a drive that puts the Colts up 17-3, do the Saints recover from that? If the Colts recover that onside kick and then score, they go up 17-6, do the Saints recover from that? A LOT of football was played prior to Peyton's interception. IMO Peyton didn't do what his team needed him to do to win, but neither did Wayne, Garcon or anyone in the Colts' secondary.

More than anything the Saints deserve credit. Their defensive game plan couldn't have been much better. They had a good mix of blitzes and dropping into coverage, had several players step up and make big plays on D, and their offense did a good job keeping Peyton off the field so he couldn't get in a rhythm after the 1st quarter.

I think most would agree that Peyton is the best regular season QB of all time. And yes you can laugh Reg season HAHA, but, NFL unlike most other major sports like MLB or NBA a bad month could mean you don't make the playoffs. How many teams go 1-3 or 0-4 in a month and are even still in contention?? The Colts have won 12 and 13 games over and over in this man's career. Yes he's 9-9 in the post-season but he's won a SB and got them to another one. I mean look at Ben Rothlesberger, he's got 2 and he played friggin horrendous in that first superbowl.. Peyton played very well last night, 31-45 333 1/1 were his stats.. I understand if you want to take all the glory you have to take the blame too at the QB spot, but Peyton has had an amazing career. I don't know how anyone can say he is not top 5 right now with years left to go..

i think what mainly lost the game was the lack of defensive adjustments. they sat in the same cover 2 zone the ENTIRE GAME. didnt bother to mix it up once Brees had them figured out, and once Freeney's ankle started tightening up which really took away a lot of the pressure they were able to get in the first half.

The Colts' D might has been good the past few years but IMO there's always some weird undependable vibe it gives off. It's great in the sense that everyone besides Mathis and Freeney can get injured without affecting it too much, but there's something not right about a defense set up like that (mainly that if Freeney or Mathis goes down, it's fucked).

The Saints' D might not be good but at least it's capable of mixing things up and isn't so dependent on 1-2 players. If the Saints' D kept trotting out the same coverage over and over again, Manning would have had a field day.

ive never thought that their defense was all that great. they have their spurts where they step it up, but generally, they rely a lot on Peyton and the offense keeping them off the field and keeping the pressure off of them. usually they are able to score so easily, that it forces most opposing offenses to go into a pass happy mode, which allows more opportunities for rushers like Freeney and Mathis to get pressure and create easy opportunities for the rest of the defense.

this game was perfect proof of what i have constantly been saying... the Colts LIVE off of Peyton Manning. the dude IS the Indianapolis Colts. without him, they are probably the most screwed team in the NFL. Polian needs to get him some more help (on the DEFENSIVE side of the ball)

Again I agree, their offense in large part is their defense. Get a lead so Freeney and Mathis don't have to play the run, they get to fly by the guy who is supposed to be blocking them and they get pressure quickly. They generally "step up" in the 2 minute defense type situation when the other team can't run the ball because of the clock. Everyone in their secondary is great at certain things but has glaring weaknesses against certain things.

Any team able to run a balanced, ball control offense is gonna give the Colts problems. The Dolphins lost to them this year but dominated T.O.P. and probably would have won if they weren't so run heavy. Before New England went to a douche-ass pass happy offense and had a ball control offense, they would always kill Indy. The Saints are the latest example of a team that can run and pass their way to long drives that keep their offense off the field and get their defense tired.

yeah that could help them as well, although i was suprised at how well addai played. im sure some of that was because the saints completely sold out on defense to defend the pass (which wasnt really working) but Addai was running very hard, fighting constantly for a few extra yards. but as long as they have peyton and that lethal passing offense, their run game will be able to at least be remotely effective, even if they dont seem to get a lot of total yards through a season.

i think they should focus their ENTIRE offseason to the defense. the offense will be just fine. colts will still be contenders for several more years, and the main reason for that is Manning.

The bottom line is 3>1

Peyton, IMO, is the better quarterback overall. But 3>1 is pretty fucking convincing.

Peyton vs. Brees, 1=1, with Peyton having the big advantage for having taken his team to 2 SBs.

Also, FWIW, Favre and PM now have the same SB record

The fact that Montana owns 4 rings puts him head and shoulders above the rest.

Its not really measurable how well a QB has to play and guide his team through the playoffs, make some plays on his own(The Catch), NOT fuck up, and end up with a ring.....Thats why its rare to find a QB with multiple SB rings.....Montana did it 4 times! Thats greatness right there.

any other position and your argument is valid.

But QB is so much more important than any other position. That's why it's so rare that a team without an elite QB wins a Super Bowl. You've gotta be so completely badass in every other area of the game to make up for poor quarterbacking.

Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer are the extreme exception. Do you think the Saints win the Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer in his prime at QB? If Drew Bledsoe never got hurt, are the Patriots a dynasty?

Rings are an important argument for QB greatness. It's not the only factor, but it absolutely has to weigh heavily in judging a QB.

i can agree with that

but at the same time, you cant expect the most badass of QBs to be able to lead a shitty team to a championship either

no way in hell does brady, montana, or a majority of other QBs lead a team with a shit defense and a massively overrated coach like the colts to a championship the way Manning did. that team constantly has depended on Manning to lead scoring drives over and over. hell their defense depends on manning, unlike guys like brady who could depend on their defense when the offense was sucking ass. but in mannings case, if hes having a horrible day, then its highly unlikely that the colts are gonna win, especially against really good teams. on the other hand, you gonna tell me that Peyton couldnt win a ring with a team like, say, the steelers? he has the luxury of a solid running game, a badass WR in Ward, and a monster defense that could win games for the steelers. notice, that this year, once the defense started sucking ass, worthlessburger (while putting up nice stats) couldnt win shit. on the other hand, manning has a shit defense, yet puts up 12 wins a season. i think that is enough proof for how good Manning is.

ive said it a number of times and ill say it again...

the best two QBs in NFL history are Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. they both have been able to do things that no other QB was able to do (Manning - winning a superbowl with a pass-only attack and an awful defense, Brady - winning consistently in a capped era with no real superstars around him and a seemingly different style of play every couple years). montana benefited like crazy from the WCO in an era where no one really knew how to defend lethal passing attacks like the WCO (the emergence of the WCO being the reason that the Bears with that loaded-ass defense only won 1 title, because they couldnt stop such an attack). i think that both of them could have won if you replaced montana with them. but i dont think if you replaced Brady or Manning with Montana, that the Pats or Colts would be as successful.

SpuronyourFace
02-11-2010, 12:49 PM
You can't really measure statistics of QB's over a generational gap. The game is alot different now than it was back in the 70's, 80's and hell, even 90's. The game is now tailored for higher scoring, to protect QBs, to increase offensive output. There are more rules and limitations that today's defenders have to adhere to. All of this has lead to a spike in offensive production and "better" statistics for todays QBs. You take those considerations, and apply them to the exeptional talents of guys like Brady and Peyton and of course they are going to have massive statistical outputs compared to the QBs of yesteryear, and Montana specifically. Too bad we can't see Peyton and especially Brady play QB in the 70's and 80's with the lack of rules in place in todays game. Getting blown up on just about every passing attempt. You would see a decline in their production.

You state that the Bears only won 1 title in the 80s because of the advent of the WCO, but Im inclined to think that they only won 1 title because of their QB at the helm. Jim McMahon, who was just like Brad johnson and Trent Dilfer.

The 26th ranked pass defense in the NFL shouldn't have been a problem for the awesome Peyton Manning.

It was actually worse, if you consider the type of QBs they faced.

Stafford, Sanchez, Moore, Kolb, Henne, Freeman(twice), Delhomme, Edwards, Redman, Bulger

That ain't exactly a Murderer's Row.

Manning - winning a superbowl with a pass-only attack and an awful defense

Yeah, a pass-only attack that ran the ball 37 times a game in the playoffs.

Is it awful when your defense gives up less than 90 rushing yards/playoff game, 5.5 YPA and creates 13 TOs?

Really?

generally, the teams that gave them problems were west coast/quick passing offenses. thats why the 46 was such a short lived defense.

To get *rewarded* for a game ending Tuck fumbling ball makes Bowl 1 nullified to all but the Brady Butt/Pat Worshippers.

That having been said, sometimes in addition to cheating ^^^ it takes luck, ie Joe Montanas 4th qtr throwing the ball right into the hands of the Cinci db who popped off to him all week of the Bowl. Would have virtually sealed the game for Cinci, the rest is history.

Oakland was up 13-3 in the 4th and couldn't hold the lead. Oakland couldn't convert a key 3rd and short on the drive before the "tuck" series. Oakland decided to kneel the ball with the game tied at 13 and send it to OT. Oakland's D couldn't stop the Pats in OT.

Using the tuck rule as the sole reason for why the Pats won that game is comedy. Bad calls are part of the game. Oakland was up 13-3 and had their chances to win that game and they couldn't execute.

Raiders couldn't hold a 13-3 4th quarter lead. Raiders couldn't finish the game by converting on 3rd and short late in the 4th when they were up 13-10. They had chances to avoid being in that situation. That tuck rule happened but Oakland put themselves in that position.
