The Pentagon’s release of the Ballistic Missile Defense Review (http://www.defense.gov/bmdr/BMDR%20as%20of%2026JAN10%200630_for%20web.pdf) [1] confirmed that North Korea could be able to deploy a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of striking the United States within the next decade.

The Washington Times (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/feb/04/nuclear-missile-threats-to-us-mount//print/) [2] reports that the review expressed serious concern over North Korea’s two underground tests and its attempt to develop a long-range missile.

The Pentagon’s review also highlighted U.S. intelligence’s concerns about the Iranian nuclear program and their pursuit of “long-range ballistic missiles.” The report comes a day after Iran announced that it had launched a rocket into space, calling attention to the regime’s serious efforts to gain this dangerous technology.

The real concern is over how the United States can protect against such threats and ensure a credible deterrent to promote regional stability in the Middle East and East Asia. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has requested $8.4 billion dollars for the Missile Defense Agency. The internal structure of this budget will serve to shift the U.S. missile defense posture away from defending against long-range missile attacks and toward countering short- and medium-range missiles. This plan is further outlined in the Ballistic Missile Defense Review Report.

Despite Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the intelligence estimates that North Korea could reach the U.S. with a missile within the decade, the Pentagon plan to deploy advanced variants of the SM-3 missiles will have “some capability to knock out long-range missile warheads” and will not be ready until 2020.

Regarding the canceled deployment of interceptors in Easter Europe, the Heritage Foundation’s Baker Spring writes (http://www.heritage.org/Research/BallisticMissileDefense/wm2624.cfm) [3], “The plan sets up a false choice between long- and short-range defenses in terms of sequencing, when the U.S. needs to field defenses against both short-range and longer-range missiles immediately.”

Really the USA really should focus on their outdated missile defense system and real homeland security, considering their badly failed test on a short range balistic missile with no MIRV capabilities recently that wasn't even mentioned in the news. In all honesty they are either pretty brave or gung ho to be playing war games in the Persian Gulf, all the while realizing that a conventional strike on Iran will ultimately fail. Iran is pretty much sending out an open invitation for an Israeli strike on their nuclear facilities, itching to test out their new S-300PMU1(domestically produced, upgraded version of the Russian S-300 anti balistic and Air defense system), the chances being that it would probably never be used at all, because Israeli F-16s will be hunted down upon entering Iranian airspace. Iranian stealth Diesel subs and it's thousands of cruise missiles will decimate an entire fleet of Aegis or Cruiser class system if the USA + Israel ever attempt a blockade on Iranian territory which constitute an act of war, and also sealing up the Straits of Hormuz and collapsing the dollar turning it into worthless paper is just one of the tactics Iran can use, and lets not forget the 100000+ USA troops still stuck in a base in the middle of nowhere in Iraq, vulnerable to decimation anytime. Last but not least if Israel ever attempt to go crazy with a Nuclear strike on Iran, they will be destroyed in retaliation, there's absolutely every chance that Iran have procured(likely from Pakistan and North Korea) at least a few atomic bombs or even nuclear bombs of their own already, even with that a few teens of normal emp or hydrogen missiles lobbed at Israel will be enough to sink that tiny country, then the zionist can kiss their homeland and their zionism goodbye. Second strike capabilities is well within Iranian capabilities, decoy underground bunkers, and thousand of decoy launch pad, + stealth submarines able to strike well within the range of Israel anytime. Guys it's not a bluster, Iran can virtually conflagrate the whole world into a third world war, with the Chosen race leading the way for the coming of their messiah the prophet Yisrael. That is what neo-con zionist stupidity does to you, on 9/11 Putin was basically spreading disinformation about Al-Queda involvement in Iraq to the dimwitted Bush and his chickenhawk cronies. Most likely anticipating a quagmire for the USA, which is exactly what happened, it's really unfortunate, i actually feel sorry for Americans despite your elites utter disdain for human lives and willingness to massacre your own people and run your country to the ground.

Old man's voice:

NK' s ability to hit the west coast of the USA has been declassified since the early aughts..

I saw the George Tenet testimony before Congress on TV. I want to say it was 2002-3. It surprised me at the time, how cool Tenet was about it.

I believe the declassified answer to that is yes.I.e., can NK hit the west coast of the US with a missile?

Oopps... It the seems that reality has turned the "novel threat assessment" outlined in the "Fact sheet on U.S. missile defense policy" old and dated in just a few months.

Maybe now Obama can explain what's exactly his stance on missile defence.

Why would North Korea launch a missile at the US?

...because they're EVIL.....EEEEEEE.........VVVVVVVVVV...IIIIII....LL LLLL

Seriously, U.S. intelligence, a true oxymoron if there ever was one, told us that Iraq had stockpiles of WMD's ready to strike the U.S. with worthless scud missiles at Saddam's whim....what a joke....now were supposed to believe that a country that is still barely lobbying missiles over Japan can strike the West Coast....with nuclear capable missiles.....what a joke...

We have the best intel group in the world and in history. every country's intel agency thought saddam had wmds. I doubt they can hit us twice if they shot 10. Still I think they have the capability.

I wish the half-retarded op would quit posting 'conservative' think tank bullshit as if it had any validity or objectivity whatsoever.
