A little sneak peek for Saturday...QB David Ash of Belton is likely the only quarterback that will visit Austin for Junior Days. It's not a secret that he is #1 on the recruiting board for the Longhorns as far as QBs are concerned. However, an interesting little nugget that popped us this week...QB Michael Brewer of Austin Lake Travis met with Texas OC Greg Davis on Wednesday to discuss a "grayshirt" opportunity. For those of you who don't know what this means, it's essentially a tool coaches use to get more recruits while making the scholarship numbers work. If he agrees, Michael Brewer will sign a letter of intent in February of 2011 but wouldn't count towards that class. He wouldn't enroll until Spring 2012. His family name is a legacy at UT (grandfather and father played QB for the Horns) so he might go for the idea if wants to play for Texas that badly. He is an excellent prospect and many people think he is the best QB in Texas as he already holds offers from Auburn, Baylor and Texas Tech.

I think brewers the best I've seen for 11, I don't think he'll go for the grayshirt with all the offers he has. My guess is he has a huge senior year and they offer no strings.

Depending on how you look at it, it's kind of a slap in the face to Brewer. I hope they're not taking it for granted that he has UT bloodlines. I would truly hope that they're telling him that they will NOT take a QB in the 2012 class if he decided to grayshirt.

I'm with you Mookie...I hope this kid plays so well in his senior season that Texas is forced to offer him straight up. It would be a shame to see him go somewhere else (being an Austin kid) considering that he's probably better than Case McCoy at this point in time. McCoy is bascially taking up a scholarship spot that could potentially cost Texas the chance at signing Brewer.

I wouldn't be offended, Texas hasn't even made any offers (that he would know of) for 11 anyway. They'll be guys we want and need at junior days who won't get offers just because of numbers, some will end up in Austin and some won't. Other schools will be using that against Texas for the next year even if texas is sending the house, they'll say- Mack didn't want you son and we did

but yeah I'm afraid they tipped their hand by taking wood and McCoy this year, I just hope it's brewer or nobody, ash and walsh don't really wow me, great potential, ranked high, but guys you can get in any year

we won't be hurting for spots, take around 23 next year but still no room to take average qbs, with the need we have at rb, oline and corner

I presume Brewer thinks he's being asked to grayshirt for any of the following options:

1.) David Ash is their #1
2.) Texas doesn't plan on taking a QB in 2012
3.) They won't be offering Ash and want to take more guys for the offensive line and defensive backfield
4.) More of the RB prospects want to commit than the staff originally thought

You never know with these Junior Days. All the kids sit down personally with Mack and Co. and things can change quickly. They may be using a bit of "strategery" with Ash and won't offer him until they see who commits first. You're right about other schools' recruiting tactics against Texas. They use the fact that Texas has a "good" problem with so many guys wanting to come aboard that they can't take everyone. This is why they have to be extra careful about who they offer initially because the kids who aren't offered will be told, "Texas didn't want you" by other coaching staffs. I think Ash is a Longhorn by Monday, but I hope Brewer comes aboard regardless of what happens.

Here is another guy that is being recruited by Texas and will probably come to the second Junior Day on 2/27. Orangebloods seems to think he already has an unofficial offer from Duane Akina. Many think he's a lot like DeMarco Cobbs in the sense that he wants to leave the state of Oklahoma to play his college football. I added him to the master list at the top of the page.

CB, Josh Turner, Milwood (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) (6-0, 185)

It's important to note that many insiders on Orangebloods have been hearing that some "surprises" will come out of the second Junior Day. It will be a day where a handful of out-of-state prospects could be (or will be) visiting Austin. You have to remember that it's hard for many of these out-of-staters to get to Austin because they have to pay their own way. On the positive side of that, it looks really good for the Horns when these types of kids visit because it shows you they are serious.

Here is a list of the guys who have been confirmed for Junior Day this weekend. Remember, these are always unofficial lists because some don't end up making it, some are surprise visits and others don't make their appearances public for one reason or another. As you can see above, Chet Moss, Taylor Doyle and Jaxon Shipley all committed earlier this afternoon before I could make the list. I'll update the master page as more commitments are made throughout the weekend.

this class looking a little WASPy if this trend continues, it wont though

love all 3, just what we needed

:lol
It is looking a bit WASPy at the moment, but these are no choir boys. A lot of people may be upset that Texas went with Moss and Doyle because their production had fallen off a bit. Moss got mononucleosis this past season and I believe Doyle broke his leg. However, Texas will never have issues with these kids and they will all be big contributors down the road. Great start to the 2011 class...

saw that kid at spring practice 2008 sporting his letterman jacket and made a note, love his film, he can tackle

didnt know much about doyle til last week, he seems a lot like paden kelley, tall, slim, pass protector, these guys need some weight. I can see 4-5 more olineman in this class with the names out there

Yeah, Moss is the fastest guy on his high school team and he just appears to be a ball hawk. Orangebloods had a cool piece on him about how he got to attend a Longhorns practice when he was in the 2nd grade and Kwame Cavil put him on his shoulders and trotted him around the field. Moss has always wanted to be a Longhorn and that's the kind of guy they need.

A lot of people haven't wanted Doyle to be offered because they think Paden Kelley is soft and they're both products of Austin Lake Travis. I can understand that because Lake Travis is not a run-heavy offense and they question their toughness when it comes to run-blocking. Kids from the Lake Travis program are well coached and know how to play the game. They'll gain weight and improve their strength once Mad Dog gets a hold of them and all should be well. I'd like to see the Longhorns take four or five more guys on the offensive line for 2011.

mookie2001
02-13-2010, 12:05 AM
i dont know if kelly is soft, but the perception is when youre a 6-7 olineman and only weigh 270, AND youre white AND from Lakeway TX and you run the spread, youre "soft"

but im not writing anyone off after their redshirt year

i dont know what to make of Madden lately, hes had some hits and misses strength wise. he's a great coach and he's not on the shitlist like McWhorter but i would like to see him change his strategy

TFloss32
02-13-2010, 12:27 AM
The 2009 offensive line class definitely has some question marks and that's evident since the Longhorn staff is working so hard to ink about 5-6 lineman for 2011. Even Mack stated in his post-National Signing Day press conference that he wishes they would've taken one more OL for the 2010 class.

I truly hope the run game receives major adjustments next season since Garrett Gilbert is not the zone read type. The coaches surely now realize (after all of this time) how important is to have a two-dimensional offense. If they had any sort of a running game last season, they probably could have still beaten Alabama when Colt McCoy went down. It will surely make our offensive line look much better if the running scheme is improved. It's hard to block consistently when our RBs are taking handoffs from a stand still position or they're running east/west. The initial penetration from the opposing defensive line is too much to deal with in a scheme like that. Despite all of the criticism though, the Longhorns have still been wildly successful.

Rolling in QB David Ash and WR Miles Onyegbule

Great start so far and I don't think Junior Day has even officially begun! :wow Ash's commitment clears up the Brewer situation a little bit. I feel like Texas should take ONE more receiver in this class because I think Miles Onyegbule is going to grow into a flex TE. Mack told him they want him at the X position (like Darius White), but not sure if he's quite the burner. Trey Metoyer is apparently having grade issues so that's why he is not in attendance this weekend. Not sure if that relationship between him and Texas is as good as most originally thought.

i like him, he can tackle the ball carrier, which is almost a lost art. I expect him to play middle, but i dont think he'll be on the field in nickle or 3rd and long, the guy has speed though

Bergerons an "H" back, which is kind of like a buzzword that came back after 20 years, doesnt really mean anything. Barrett Matthews from 09 is supposed to an HBack too. think Chris Ogbonnaya or David Thomas in his first two years, Will Matthews type guy. I seriously doubt Davis is going to go Redskins and Cooley right, Cooley left to create a position out of nowhere

Bergeron will be one of the more underrated commits in this class. If Texas is ever going to go back to a productive running scheme, this is the guy to do it with. I'm hopeful that this commitment will help Texas in recruiting Malcolm Brown, Herschel Sims, Brandon Williams, etc. He's a quick, powerful runner with great receiving skills. He's an absolute specimen on top of that. None of the guys that Mookie mentioned above are as versatile as Joe can be (and hopefully will be) for the Horns. Best fullback prospect to come out of Texas in a long time. It says a lot about the guy when many other schools are recruiting him to be a running back. Plus, how can you not like a guy named Joe?!?!?

Before anyone is quick to make judgement, I read today that Brandon Williams is quite impoverished. Not sure what his family members are like, but he lives with one of the members of his high school coaching staff. Needless to say he's naive to the recruiting process and Art Briles probably took advantage of that by being very persuasive. Baylor would be an excellent place for him to showcase his talents and get a good education, but it's still odd that he committed without first visiting Texas (his dream school). In light of this information, I can see why a young man concerned about his future would pull the trigger so quickly.

Texas cannot be stopped on the recruiting trail right now. The only ? left is will they get one of the RB studs? Anything after that would just be cherries on the top.

Here's the scholarship situation after the second Junior Day:

Outstanding Offers
RB, Aaron Green, San Antonio Madison
RB, Malcolm Brown, Cibolo Steele
OL, Matt Hegarty, Aztec (Aztec, New Mexico)
OL, Christian Westerman, Hamilton (Chandler, Arizona)
DE, Cedric Reed, Cleveland
DE, Jermauria Rasco, Evangel Christian (Shreveport, Louisiana)
DT, Marquis Anderson, Cibolo Steele
DT, Quincy Russell, San Antonio Sam Houston
LB, Anthony Wallace, Dallas Skyline

Some interesting nuggets from yesterday:

*OL Garrett Greenlea was a surprise commitment and leads many to believe that up to seven offensive lineman could be signed for 2011. OL Matt Hegarty of Aztec, New Mexico was offered as well but he'd like to make a few more visits before he decides.

*Zero DBs were offered yesterday (including Quandre Diggs). It could possibly be his grade situation, but I think the coaches are being smart and waiting to see what the roster looks like after spring practice. This is usually where inevitable attrition occurs and it will give them a better idea of how many prospects they can sign for 2011. I also think they'd like to get DB Josh Turner of Oklahoma City in for a visit to gauge his interest before making a decision on who they really want for the defensive backfield.

*WR Hakeem Flowers of Greenville, South Carolina was told that he would have an offer if he wanted to commit, but the staff did not extend an official offer. This was smart because it helps them keep a grip on how many outstanding offers they have and gives the staff an opportunity to turn Hakeem down if the scholarship situation doesn't work out when/if he decides to commit. Mack would never rescind an offer unless a recruit had behavioral or grade problems.

*WR Marquis Jackson of Forth Worth Arlington Heights, DT James Castleman of Amarillo, DB Franklin Shannon of Dallas Skyline and DB Josh Turner of Oklahoma City were not in attendance.

We better not miss on all 4 or 5 of the 5* RB recruits. I'd love to get Brown locked up, but have to get one of them or it's epic fail. So far we are recruiting defense like true beasts thanks to Boom, but the offense is a bit behind. Gotta land one of these RBs.

So what are your feelings concerning UT's QB situation? I know that Brewer was being looked at considering he is from Austin and the bloodlines but with Colt's younger brother coming and Ash's being touted by some services as UT's #1 QB target why is the lost of Brewer neccessarily bad/unhappy news? Unless of course stockpiling any and all talent is a primary goal for any school. Seems that UT wasn't pushing very hard for him considering they only were offering him grayshirt status and all. In an earlier post you even talked about that being a slap in the face of Brewer and wishing him a great senior year that would then force UT to offer hin the position straight up.

Just wondering since I really haven't kept up with UT's recruiting process. I usually get filled in come August of each year and roll with it.

I'm not happy in the sense that Texas can't make room for the guy and he will be playing for a rival in Texas Tech. I was more or less just typing out loud (I'm not truly unhappy, just disappointed). I understand that recruiting is a numbers game and you can't sign everyone. However, the current staff has a great track record when it comes to recruiting and developing QBs, so I trust that they see something special in David Ash and he's the guy for them.

About the "slap in the face" comment... I said that before David Ash committed to the Horns and when I wasn't sure what the coaching staff was going to do for the quarterback position. I thought that there was a chance that they weren't going to take a quarterback at all for 2011. At the time, I just felt like the grayshirt offer was one of those things where Brewer would think, "you're not making me a priority because you want other guys before me, but you still expect me to suit up for you because I'm a legacy." I'm happy that Greg Davis personally met with Brewer and was flat out honest with him, though. Texas didn't leave Brewer hanging and that's good to know.

Thanks for the input. I went into yahoo and checked out Ash. This dude, if he develops, could be a absolute stud. I would like for him to follow Colt's example and put on some weight. Looks a little skinny at 6-4 and 195 lbs. And I'm with you about a very good QB going to one of your major competitors. It's not like the old days where you stockpile all the talent due to the amount of scholarships available.

This class has been a real gem. Mack and Co. need to keep things rolling and get into the BCS again this coming season. The Sooners seemed to have fallen off recruiting in TX and are losing players out of their own state to UT, too. Piling on when you have the chance is what I would like to see. The Sooners wont be down for long since they have such a tradition and will eventually make a comeback. Take advantage while you can.

Thanks for your input on UT recruiting and evaluating the available players. That takes a lot of work and you need to be acknowledged for your efforts.

It's amazing what beating Oklahoma four out of five times will do for your recruiting momentum. Texas definitely has the upper hand at the moment, but you're correct about things being cyclical. However, I do feel as if Muschamp has elevated Texas' ability to pull in top recruits. His recruiting prowess and passion for the game is helping the Horns sign prospects that they may not have had a chance with otherwise.

Not a problem at all. I enjoy passing along any information I can. We're getting into the slower part of recruiting season, but hopefully Texas can get one or two more guys by Easter. Glad you enjoy the thread and keep checking back for updates.

Please don't take this as a negative but I have a question for you and any 'Horn fan out there.

As stated Muschamp has helped the D in recruiting. How is Davis doing? Over the years I have not been a fan of his. In the beginning I thought the O was too conservative though since Colt's arrival it has opened up more. I also thought that when Vince was here he was just a man among boys and literally toyed with the oposition his last two years or so. But lately on this board I keep hearing about our inability to recruit RBs since the offensive is more pass oriented. Charles was the last real quality back that we have had, though injury has played a part in the Horns lack of a real running game. But it seems that the top RBs are shying away from UT because they think that they wont get the touches that they want or need to be successful. And lets face it these recruits have their eyes set on the NFL so they will go where they can be showcased best.

Is Davis's offensive scheme too pass oriented so as to make UT not a good fit for those top RBs? I don't think he is going anywhere since it is my firm belief that he is litereally tied to the hip of Mack so thinking that he might be replaced is foolish. IMHO

Though we beat the 'Huskers to get to the BCS title game I think our lack of offensive flexibility was exposed by them. For the 'Horns to just score only 13 points and win it that late in the 4th Q didn't bode well for their chances against Alabama. That worried me going into the game but after the 5th play of the game I just relaxed and hoped that they would represent themselves well. And they did just that. I was proud that they didn't quit since it would have been so understanding if they had.

Just wondering.

There will be a lot of 2010 commitments in town this weekend for a meeting. The list includes DE Jackson Jeffcoat and TE Darius Terrell (to name a few). A possible 2011 commitment is also making his way to Austin this weekend. DE Cedric Reed of Cleveland will be in town with his father to check out practice, the campus and the surrounding area of the city.

“I told (my father) I wanted to go to one of their practices and we planned when we were going to go. I want to see how they practice, go up there and see Austin. I’ve been around campus but I haven’t been all around town, but hopefully we can do that this weekend.”

He will hopefully also be spending lots of time with DE Jackson Jeffcoat to talk about his recruitment and get a feel for what his future could be like at UT.

“I’ll definitely try to get to talk to him. I already kind of know him (from AAU and visits to UT games), so I’ll talk to him and ask him some questions.”

When asked about the current state of his recruitment and the thought of playing for Texas:
"I like Texas a lot. It’s the home state school. They’ve got a winning tradition, the coaches are great, the academics are good, it’s not too far from home."

He also mentioned that he was not close to a decision and had no clear-cut favorite, but he'd rather make a commitment "sooner than later." He reiterated that he has no reservations about prolonging his recruitment in order to make an informed decision (even if that means committing during football season). He's surrounded by a heavy Aggie influence and we'll have to wait and see how this one shakes out.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A bit of a surprise on this one...LB Anthony Wallace of Dallas Skyline will be making his way to Austin with his family on Easter weekend for the annual Spring Game. Everyone seemed to be thinking that Wallace was on the outside looking in at this point because the 2011 class already has three LBs committed and Texas is in hot pursuit of LB James Vaughters out of Georgia. However, Wallace has been speaking with Coach Bruce Chambers at least once a week since the first Junior Day in February.

When asked about the scholarship situation and what Texas is telling him:
"They say competition is going to make the best players. They’ve mentioned that they’re getting kind of full but I can still come. That would be where the best comp is."

When asked about Oklahoma supposedly being the frontrunner in his recruitment:
"Everybody is really even. None of that is true."

Guy looks like a 5 star all the way, but OTs almost never start all 4 years.

If he's not a five-star prospect, I'm not sure who else is. Ideally you don't want your linemen to have to start as freshman. However, I've read a lot of articles where many scouts think he was ready for the collegiate level as a junior in high school. He dominated camps wherever he went. The Texas coaches would like for him to enroll early, so we'll see what happens come Fall of 2011.

Nice, I was afraid we wouldn't get Westerman as an OOS guy. Any news on the kid Vaughters from GA? How about Brown?

James Vaughters had a visit to Austin set up the weekend before Easter, but had to cancel because of a death in the family. Looks like him and his father have re-scheduled for a later date in May. Texas is now 1 of 9 schools on his current list and he doesn't even have an official offer from the Horns. That's a huge compliment to Texas and I'm confident they'll be in it until the end. I feel as if he's truly looking at only 4 schools; Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Texas. This kid is Muschamp's priority and I feel good about our chances (especially if Vaughters gets to Austin soon).

Not much news on Malcolm Brown. He's been to Austin a couple of times since the first Junior Day and rumor has it that he'll be in town this weekend for the red carpet treatment. Some think he could commit as early as this weekend (especially since Christian Westerman is now on board), but the overall feeling is he will announce in late April after his high school's spring practice comes to an end.

3. Cedric Reed DE/ Jermauria Rasco DE
4. James Vaughters LB/ Anthony Wallace LB
5. Aaron Green RB/ Brandon Williams RB/ Hershel Sims RB/ DeAnthony Thomas RB

Read through the thread and you'll see that I've covered Texas Tech's class pretty thoroughly and given the Red Raiders their props. We've also discussed Michael Brewer a lot. They'll end up having the second best class among Texas schools. I'm actually nervous that they'll end up with Kenny Williams AND Herschel Sims. That will be the best RB class in the country unless BOTH Malcolm Brown and Aaron Green choose Texas.

^Hey TFloss, any ideas on a time table for our RB prospects? I've been reading all over the place that M. Brown will sign with UT, just a matter of time. Hell, they even made sure to run a power type running game in the Spring game just to show him that we're committed to the run. Also, A. Green-any info on where he is at with recruiting?

One thing is for sure, if we don't land one of the big time RB prospects in the state in a recruiting year which is loaded with top quality RB's, something is up with Major and being the RB coach. Mack might have to take a serious look at that situation sooner rather than later. Hook'em

I've been hearing for a while that most suspect Malcolm Brown will commit at the end of his high school's spring training (which would be this week or next week), but he's since denied that claim. The writing is on the wall with him...it's just a matter of time. I think Texas gets a commitment from him before school starts up again (at the latest). I also expect DB Josh Turner of Oklahoma City to give a commitment to Texas around that time as well.

With Aaron Green, there's not much to report as he keeps pretty quiet. I've never been optimistic with his recruitment and I would've much rather the Longhorns have offered Herschel Sims from the beginning. Even though I think Green ends up at Nebraska with his brother, I still find it encouraging that he mentions teaming up with Malcolm Brown in a lot of his interviews. He talks about how it "wouldn't be fair for defenses" and how much fun it would be. He knows how good they'd make each other look and neither guy would have to carry a heavy load. He says that he and Brown text back and forth a lot and have formed a great friendship. It's pretty obvious that Brown is trying to get him to Texas. If the Horns end up getting a commitment from Green in the end, we'll all look back and see that Malcolm Brown was an integral part of his recruitment.

Some other news...TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins of Gig Harbor, Washington has mentioned in his last couple of interviews that Major Applewhite has been in contact with him recently and he's also talked to the latest Texas commit, Cedric Reed, about what the Longhorns have to offer. Not sure where the relationship between Seferian-Jenkins and Reed began, but I'll post more as the story develops. It appears as if Florida is the clear leader in his recruitment, but I know that he really, really likes Texas. An offer from the Longhorns could change a lot.

I wanted follow up quickly on the nation's #1 TE, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, out of Gig Harbor, Washington. Things have turned in Texas' favor very suddenly in the past two weeks. He had this to say recently about his list of favorites:

"Texas would be at the top even though they haven't offered. They're pretty far up there and they have a really good program. I'm talking to coach (Bruce) Chambers a lot now. It's really exciting for them to recruit me and they have a really good school and they run a similar offense to my high school that I run right now so it would be an easy transition for me."

He also said in a recent article that he would "probably" commit to Texas when he gets an offer. I still think a lot of things have to go right for this one to go down, but Texas is in good position. He plans on making a trip to Austin this summer after he finishes the school year. I also found out that his high school quarterback's mother is a UT alum and that's how he got to visit Austin the first time around (he tagged along on their family vacation).

That would be great news but Greg Davis hasn't really ultilized theTE position all that much. Would this be a change in philosophy? Though Gilbert performed admirally against 'Bama the more weapons UT can put on the field the better.

Ever since Blaine Irby tore his knee up, it seems as if Texas has had an ongoing curse at the TE position. I don't think it's about not using a TE as much as it is about not having a TE to use. Blaine Irby, D.J. Grant, Ian Harris...they've all been hurt. Combine that with a lack of a true running game and Colt's record-breaking accuracy, this is why you've seen such a pass-happy attack the past two seasons.

I truly believe that Mack Brown and Greg Davis want to develop a more balanced offensive attack, but it's easier said than done. They'll never get recruits like Malcolm Brown and Aaron Green to come to the 40 Acres if something doesn't change and they know that. Having two TEs like M.J. McFarland and Austin Seferian-Jenkins (hopefully he commits) will give you a lot of flexibility with play-calling and something that the Horns haven't had since David Thomas left. Guys like that will help improve the ground game tremendously. Look for TE Barrett Matthews to make a name for himself this year as well as true freshman TE Darius Terrell.

I've been slacking on my updates, but here's what I have:

**Texas' recruitment of TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been heating up over the past two weeks and Coach Bruce Chambers was in Gig Harbor, Washington yesterday for a visit. After the workout, Seferian-Jenkins confirmed through his coach that he will be in Austin on June 13th along with his mother for one of the Longhorns' summer mini-camps (more on that in a bit). He said he hasn't ruled out a commitment while in Austin, but I expect him to at least go home with an offer on the table. A lot of people have been questioning Seferian-Jenkins' motives as of late and wonder if he's just hunting for another big school to add to his incredible offer list, but he's done enough in my book to prove his interest is genuine. Texas has been burned a couple of times by stud out-of-state prospects in the past, so Mack Brown and Co. are doing the right thing by slow-playing the situation and getting him to campus before they officially offer. This appears to be a three-horse race between Texas, Florida and Washington with the Longhorns in the driver's seat.

**Texas will be hosting two mini-camps next month on June 6th and June 13th. The first mini-camp will be mainly for the current 2011 commits and big names such as OT Christian Westerman, LB Steve Edmond and DT Desmond Jackson will all be in attendance. It's more or less a way for the current commits to re-connect with the coaching staff and build camaraderie. The second camp will feature some uncommitted 2011 prospects such as CB Charles Jackson and numerous 2012 prospects. I'll have a full list for each camp at a later date.

**A new prospect has found his way into the recruiting mix and is being looked at pretty closely by the Texas staff. CB David Jenkins of Lewisville Hebron is vying for an offer from the Longhorns. He will also be in attendance for the June 13th mini-camp (along with CB Charles Jackson) and it will be interesting to see which prospect receives an offer. Some think the last DB spot will go to David Jenkins OR Charles Jackson, but not both. Others seem to think that both guys could leave Austin without an offer. We'll see what happens...
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-David-Jenkins-112677

**This is somewhat of a "water is wet" kind of update, but RB Aaron Green has narrowed his list to four schools: Texas, Nebraska, Cal and Florida State. Make no mistake about it...this is a two-school race between the Horns and Huskers. The longer his recruitment goes on, the more positive I feel about the Horns' chances. I still see him going to Nebraska but take comfort in the fact that RB Malcolm Brown is always in his ear about going to Texas and forming a nasty backfield tandem. Aaron Green and Malcolm Brown currently have no plans for any summer camps, but don't be surprised if they make a couple of unofficial visits during their summer vacation to scope out Austin and the Texas campus a bit more (hopefully they decide to go together).

**Rivals is supposed to be coming out with their first set of ratings for the 2011 class in early June and the rumor is only 11 prospects in the entire country are five-star worthy at this time. Don't be surprised if three of those guys are future Longhorns: Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Christian Westerman and Malcolm Brown.

That's been the rumor for quite some time but I can't find a legitimate source that backs it up and the high school schedules haven't been released yet. It was all ASJ. He's been extremely proactive in contacting the Texas coaches to convince them his interest is genuine. I don't expect him to commit on June 13th while in Austin but it says a lot that his mother is making the trip with him. CB Josh Turner of Oklahoma City had to cancel his visit for the first mini-camp on June 6th due to a death within his church. He has re-scheduled and will attend the second mini-camp on June 13th along with TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins of Gig Harbor, Washington. Turner's situation may actually be a blessing in disguise for the Longhorns because he will visit the Oklahoma campus (it's about 20 minutes away from his house) since he has to remain in town for a funeral. I believe his recruitment is down to Texas and Oklahoma...so it may be a good thing that the Longhorns get him in for a visit right after he's visited the Sooners. The only negative in my eyes is he doesn't get to hang out with the current commits.

Interesting tidbit...OU commit TE Chris Barnett made it to the mini-camp in Austin today and is working out for the Longhorn staff. Many think he's been wavering lately and is looking to get out of his commitment because TE Max Stevenson of Klein Oak recently committed to the Sooners. I don't think this means much and I'd still rather have ASJ. Barnett is an excellent talent, but many think he's a bit of a flake.

Also, LB Anthony Wallace of Dallas Skyline actually did make it into town this weekend. He's not working out but he is hanging out with the other commits and watching from the sidelines. He's been a bit unpredictable and hard to track down, so this is great news for Texas that he's in attendance today.

True DTs don't grow on trees and Quincy Russell could be a freakin' beast under Muschamp's tutelage. I'd take him over Jermauria Rasco any day of the week.

You can probably add two more guys to that list. I think this class goes to at least 25. The recruiting momentum is just insane at the moment.

Couple more things:

**WR Jaxon Shipley was apparently the talk of the camp today. Some thought he was the best overall prospect there. The other commits were blown away by him.

**RB Malcolm Brown was in attendance today as well. He didn't work out but it's great news that he was there to hang out with the other commits.

**CB Charles Jackson supposedly did well today but there's still no word of an offer from the Texas staff.

With interest from Jenkins their is no way he gets offered especially with a TE already on board for the UT class. It's great to see OU lose a recruit though. I could see Barnett ending up ending up at one of the other texas schools like tech or Baylor. Somewhere he can see some playing time.

I heard that the Barnetts asked the Texas staff to give Chris a second chance and that's how he ended up at the camp. The Longhorns apparently told the family there will be no scholarship offer, but let him work out regardless. I think his family is trying their best to get him on the straight and narrow as he's had some personal issues. I see him ending up at A&M or Arkansas, actually. Some are even claiming he may walk-on at Texas because the family wants him to be with his brother. I seriously doubt that happens, but it would be crazy if Texas nabbed a Rivals 250 prospect without giving up a scholarship. :chestbump

This 2012 stud was at the mini-camp on Sunday. He didn't work out because has a torn meniscus, but he was able to hang out with the commits and even had a sit-down with Mack and Sally Brown. Tells you what kind of prospect he is. He's from the same high school as current commit, LB Kendall Thompson, and I assure you he is a high priority for next year.

Might want to sign some defensive backs or running backs in this class not put 15 TEs on the roster

I think certain guys are going to have to commit (Turner, Green, ASJ) before Texas decides whether or not they'll offer an extra defensive back. It seems as if they would've done it by now (unless Charles Jackson's grades are that bad). I think Texas gets commitment #21 by this time next week if all of the guys scheduled to be in attendance this weekend actually make it to Austin.

**DE Jermauria Rasco of Shreveport Evangel Christian has confirmed that he will make it to Austin this weekend along with his mother and he will be participating in workouts.

**No official confirmation from TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins. He's still trying to get flight arrangements worked out because his mother isn't sure if she can make it this weekend. ASJ mentioned he will come in town June 17th-19th if he doesn't make the mini-camp this weekend because the coaches still want him to work out and tour the facilities, campus, etc. I know it sounds shady, but the guy is hell-bent on making it to Austin. He'll get to Texas eventually if he wants an offer as badly as he says he does.

Wonder of ASJ has back door talks going on with another U and is posturing. I don't think so because I don't see the benefit to him to do that. If he were visiting USC a flight wouldn't be a problem, a limo filled with hotties carrying a duffel bag full of 100s would be arriving promptly.

Well...no Austin Seferian-Jenkins this weekend. He wasn't able to work out plans with his mother, but says he'll get to Austin on June 18th or the 25th. He talked to Coach Bruce Chambers and Mack Brown over the phone this week and here's what he had to say about the conversation:

“Coach Chambers talked to me about how he really wants me to get down here and how coach Brown is really excited to meet me. Then coach Brown got on phone and he remembered me from when I was a freshman and visited down there. He said he’s excited to see me again, show me the campus, show why Texas is the best football program in the country. There's a good chance if I get that offer from Texas I'll go ahead and commit."

**I went ahead and updated the list above for the mini-camp this weekend, but the only guy I don't have a confirmation for is DT Quincy Russell.

TFloss32
06-13-2010, 01:19 PM
The mini-camp hasn't exactly gone as planned so far. No Austin Seferian-Jenkins, no Jermauria Rasco and no Josh Turner. ASJ couldn't work out flight arrangements, Rasco had a 7-on-7 event and Turner's mother got called into work at the last minute (she's a nurse apparently). I've heard Quincy Russell will be in attendance, though. Here are some additional 2012 prospects that will be at the camp:

QB, Connor Washington, Stephenville (6-2, 190)

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/recruit-search-results?year=2011&sport_id=1&sport=football&keywords=josh+turner

Also, supposedly another DB offer went out after the second mini-camp to CB David Jenkins of Lewisville Hebron. His current leaders are Texas and LSU (he's a Louisiana native). It's kind of a tricky situation because many think it might be an offer with an incentive or there is a timeframe attached to it. Others think he doesn't have an offer at all. All I know is that his coach said he's got an offer (whatever that means). Hopefully this doesn't put CB Charles Jackson out of the picture because he wants to a Longhorn badly. He even showed up to both mini-camps the past two weekends. Texas better play the situation carefully as his offer list continues to grow. Florida offered last week and that tells you what kind of talent he has. I'd rather have Jackson than Jenkins personally.

Don't be surprised if they exceed 25. You've still got LB Anthony Wallace and DE Jermauria Rasco on the outside looking in.

You're correct, Brown is just a matter of time. I'll give Texas the slight edge over Nebraska with Aaron Green. I'm growing more and more optimistic as time goes on. Nebraska's switch to the Big 10 makes more of a difference than most think as he wouldn't play a game anywhere close to home in the foreseeable future. He's still got Malcolm Brown in his ear and now Quincy Russell will do a bit of his own recruiting.

I read that because this 2011 class is so talented and Texas is the leader for four or five uncommitted studs at this point (Brown, Green, Seferian-Jenkins, Rasco and maybe Wallace), Mack Brown is prepared to take the "motherload of all classes." They very well may not take over 25, but the numbers always seem to work out and there has been more attrition than most think or know about.

FB, Antwan Cobb= Retired (Knee Injuries)
WR, Philip Payne= Retired (Playing Time)
WR, Brandon Collins= Dismissed (Multiple Arrests)
WR, Dan Buckner= Transfer/Dismissed (Arrest and Multiple Disciplinary Issues)
CB, Ben Wells= Transfer (Playing Time)
CB, Marcus Davis= Transfer/Dismissed (DUI)
DT, Russell Carter= Transfer (Playing Time)

I've heard there could be two or three more guys off of the team before the first game against Rice. Right now I'm hearing DT Derek Johnson is having major grade issues and RB D.J. Monroe might be in the same boat. You also have to consider how talented the 2010 and 2011 classes are. There will be a handful of upperclassmen that will see the writing on the wall as they challenge for playing time. The fat always seems to trim itself.

I'd still be surprised if we land both Brown and Ramonce II, err... Green. Hopefully Nebraska leaving has dropped him into our laps and the coaches showing him the Ramonce 2005 sans weed and bitches (ok just weed) role will get him on board. I didn't know that about Johnson, that suck and means that getting Russell was mandatory and Dorsey or Bible is going to have to be ready for legit backup minutes this fall. I don't like having true rooks in there unless they're just so bad ass they have to play, but hopefully one of them can run with the 15 snaps a game backup role.

Here's the latest update on Texas' five remaining targets. The optimism on RB Aaron Green has seemingly gone out the window in a period of a week. He was quoted saying this week, "Texas isn't recruiting me." Now, on the surface that's a horrible thing to hear. But the interview he gave was to Rivals' Nebraska site (Husker Illustrated) and it seemed as if he's just sick of the recruiting process and popped off at the reporter when asked about Texas. I would assume Texas is just giving him space at the moment, but you never know. In my opinion, Texas is still very much in it and things aren't as they seem. The longer his recruitment goes on, the better for Texas. I'm keeping the faith that Malcolm Brown and Aaron Green's friendship on top of Nebraska's move to the Big 10 will lead Green to the 40 Acres.

Just wanted to mention that RB Malcolm Brown of Cibolo Steele is on the UT campus today for an unofficial visit. It is supposedly a visit that's more geared towards looking at the campus and getting a better feel for Austin. I've heard he's touring with Major Applewhite (potential position coach at UT)...but that's just a rumor as of right now. However, I do know that he did not come to Austin by himself. Hopefully his parents have accompanied him.

Everything is gravy with Brown and ASJ, but it looks like it's still a coin flip with Rasco, Green and Wallace. I would say Green is still the longest shot, but I can see Rasco and Wallace coming around in the end. Defensive recruits always seem to come back to Muschamp and Texas when comparing schools on their list.

Malcolm Brown and Aaron Green Interview

Here's how the conversation went for those that can't view the video. They interviewed each other about different things and were basically laughing the entire time. You could tell they have a genuine friendship and hopefully they'll end up at Texas together. Know that Brown and Green will be playing against each other on ESPN for their season opener on August 28th. I have a little fantasy that they'll both wait to commit on ESPN and put on the Texas caps together. :downspin:Wouldn't that be awesome?

Aaron Green starts out with the mic:

AG: Hi, this is Aaron Green from Williamsburg, Virginia and I'm about to interview the nation's #1.... {both laughing} running back, Malcolm Eugene Brown. Malcolm, how do you feel about the recruiting process?

MB: Well, you know Aaron, it's tough. Things get hard and it's stressful at times, but all you can do is {Brown looks intensely at Green}...take it one step at a time! {inside joke...both laughing}

AG: How do you feel about your upcoming senior season and playing your first game against some kid named Aaron Green?

MB: Well, you know, Aaron Green...he's pretty good. He's a little guy, though. He's nice...it's going to be a tough game. Still, we got a young team so we're going to have to work a little harder. Madison's gonna be a tough fight, you know.

AG: Nice...nice...nice. So, who do you have your college decisions down to?

MB: I have it down to two: Alabama and Texas.

AG: Now, Malcolm Brown...can you explain to me, Aaron Green, what you like about those two schools?

MB: First off, Alabama. They have a lot of tradition...you know. I'm cool with their coaches and people around there seem very genuine about Alabama football. That's a plus for them. And Texas, you know...same thing pretty much. Very comfortable with their coaches and I've met a couple of their guys (current players) and they're very down-to-Earth guys just like I am.

AG: Nice...nice...nice. Now, how do you feel about your roommate that you're rooming with here? (Brown and Green are roomates at the event)

MB: I don't like him. I don't like him, I don't know him and I don't want to know him {both laughing}. He's all right, but...I don't even wanna talk about him, man.

Malcolm Brown takes the mic:

MB: So, Aaron...I'm stealing the mic from you now. I'm gonna drill you now...know what I'm sayin'? What's the schools you've got it narrowed down to?

AG: You know...I'm looking at Florida State, Cal, Nebraska and The University of Texas.

MB: So, just briefly, tell me what you like about each and every one of those schools?

AG: Well, Florida State down in Tallahassee {Green laughs} is showin' me a lot of love and that they really want me...so I like that. Cal, I like the offense that they run and the way they feature their running backs. Their running backs are always successful in college and at the next level. UT, I love the tradition that they got there. It's in the state of Texas and they're always winning. It's just a great school to go to for your education. And Nebraska...you know, there's just a lot of people there with a sound mind, they're an up and coming program, I like their offense and their coaching staff.

MB: So, Aaron. We have a school in common, you know {Green smiles in agreement}. The University of Texas. Would there be any interest there in you and me playing together someday...maybe down the road for four years?

AG: Well, yeah. No running back carries the load themselves nowadays. If you're going to carry the load with somebody, why not make it the best? That's how I view things.

MB: ESPN...first game. How you feel buddy? How you feel?

AG: I feel real good, you know. ESPN...Madison Mavericks. First time in history...in San Antonio history that a game is going to be nationally televised. Playing against the Steele Knights. I don't really like them...or their running back!

MB: What's his name? What's his name again?!?

AG: Malcolm Eugene Kenneth Brown...that's his name! {both laughing}.

MB: That's what's up. That's a good name right there! {both laughing} That's a nice name. This is Malcolm Brown in Williamsburg, Virginia {smiles and points at Green}...with Aaron Green. Out!

ESPN held an event this week called Gridiron Kings. It's basically a 7-on-7 event that features 64 of the best high school players from the 2011 class. Teams were put together based on what part of the country prospects are from. There were a lot of UT commits on one of the teams and some uncommitted prospects that Texas is still looking at were in attendance as well.

TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins of Gig Harbor, Washington was one of those uncommitted prospects that participated in the event. For those of you who are wondering if Texas will eventually get a commitment from ASJ...a picture is worth a thousand words.

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s256/kiris9998/gridironkings.jpg

Left to right: LB Chet Moss (Cedar Park), ATH Quandre Diggs (Angleton), LB Kendall Thompson (Carthage), CB Josh Turner (Oklahoma City Millwood), TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins (Gig Harbor, Washington), WR Jaxon Shipley (Brownwood) and WR Miles Onyegbule (Arlington).

I think it's safe to say ASJ is a Longhorn when he visits Austin in two weeks (August 6th-7th). Along with taking this photo...it was reported that he showed up to the event sporting Texas gear and that he really hit it off with the current commits.

The guys treated me well,” Seferian-Jenkins said. “I didn't know anybody. I came in late, they grabbed me, took me to their table. It’s good to have people like that out there that you can get along with.”

Here's what LB Chet Moss had to say about TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins:

“Assuming Texas offers him, I'm like 99.9 percent sure he's going to commit. Of course, that's a decision he'll have to make,” Moss said. “But he’s definitely one of us. He fits in with us really well.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another big-time uncommitted prospect that was in attendance was LB Anthony Wallace of Dallas Skyline. He had the opportunity to play alongside LBs Chet Moss and Kendall Thompson throughout the event. He supposedly received a lot of pro-UT love, but he didn't make it known what his intentions were (publicly...at least). Chet Moss has been the most active recruiter for the 2011 group and you can bet that he was in Wallace's ear all weekend. ATH Quandre Diggs did a little recruiting of his own as well;

“Oh yeah, we were doing a little recruiting, but at the same time we’re just all trying to get to know each other,” Diggs said. “Both Austin (Seferian-Jenkins) and Anthony (Wallace) are great players and we would love to have those guys on board.”

Some good news from the 2012 class and a couple of out-of-state studs to get familiar with:

QB, Connor Brewer, Chaparral (Scottsdale, AZ) (6-2, 185)
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Connor-Brewer-93534

His sister, Ashley Brewer, has just committed to swim for Texas. That's a great advantage for Texas if they decide to pursue Brewer in the upcoming year. He said he's been proactive lately in sending out tapes and attending camps. He said he's reached out to Texas offensive coordinator, Greg Davis, and they've spoken a couple of times. He even had the opportunity to talk to current UT commit, OT Christian Westerman recently about the Longhorns:

“I was actually at a recruiting thing where all the top guys came out, and we got our picture taken and they did a story on us,” Brewer said. “Out there I saw Christian and I talked to him a little bit. He said he went up there and loved Texas and he couldn’t really think of going anywhere else for college. I haven’t really talked to him a lot but when I did he definitely talked highly of Texas.”

The three QB targets for the 2012 class right now appear to be Matt Davis (Klein Forest), Trevor Knight (San Antonio Reagan) and Connor Brewer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A dynamic duo from Oxford, Alabama is in Austin this week for an unofficial visit (look at those offer sheets!):

LB, Kwon Alexander, Oxford (Oxford, Alabama) (6-2, 212)
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Kwon-Alexander-105511

S, Trae Elston, Oxford (Oxford, Alabama) (6-0, 176)
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Trae-Elston-105512

Alexander and Elston landed this evening and will be in town until Tuesday. Both have said great things about Texas and how they are anxious to see the campus and meet the coaches. It will be extremely difficult to pull these two highly sought-after recruits out of Nick Saban's backyard, but it says a lot that they flew to Austin on their own dime to check out the Longhorns. The recruiting machine that Mack Brown and Will Muschamp have built over the past couple of years is just incredible and continues to pick up steam...so I'm hardly surprised anymore when a big-time recruit commits to Texas. Seems like anything is possible with those two if they make someone a priority. Hopefully the Alabama boys will be back for Junior Days in February. I'll post a follow-up when I get more info.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

2012 RB Barry Sanders, Jr. gave Texas a shout out during his interview at the recent Top Gun camp earlier last week. He mentioned that UT is one of the schools he'd like to get a scholarship offer from and is excited to visit Austin in the future. There's a split opinion on what he'll do...some say he's an Oklahoma State lock and others say he doesn't want to play in his father's shadow and would like to attend college elsewhere. I expect he'll get a Junior Day invite.

A follow-up on the 2012 stud duo from Oxford, Alabama. I've read that both of these guys will be Rivals 100 prospects when all is said and done. Look at their offer sheets. Seems like every SEC team is recruiting them already.

LB Kwon Alexander and S Trae Elston were in Austin from Sunday afternoon until Tuesday night for an unofficial visit. They spent most of their trip with Will Muschamp and he explained to them how they'd fit into the defensive scheme if they were to play for Texas. Muschamp told both guys that they would most likely be offered in February at Junior Days and wanted them to return to Austin then (Texas doesn't give out offers for the next class until after National Signing Day). It will be difficult to pull these prospects out of SEC country but the guys came away from their trip very impressed with everything Texas and have plans to return. It's interesting to note that while Alexander grew up in Alabama, Elston did not. He is a native of Georgia and is in no way an Alabama lock at this point in time (notice his quote below). Keep in mind that these are 16 year-old kids that are very impressionable and things change daily. It is encouraging, however, that these prospects flew to Austin on their own dime so early in the recruiting process AND have plans for a return trip in February so that they can receive their offers.

You really don't see this scenario when it comes to Texas recruiting and it's evident that the staff is starting to reach beyond Texas' borders to look for talent. Will Muschamp has a lot to do with this philosophy, IMO. 2012 will be a different recruiting year than most and I think we will see the staff offer more out-of-state guys than they ever have before. The quotes from Alexander and Elston are below:

LB Kwon Alexander

"I liked the coaches a lot, coach Muschamp," Alexander said. "I liked the facilities and everything. Everybody's cool around there."

"They just told me that Mack Brown would probably offer me. They want me to come to their junior day (next February) and I might get one then. So I'm going back."

“I'm completely open. I just want to explore the world. I’ve lived out here for the longest, I want to see what else is out there."

S Trae Elston

“Me and Kwon talked about both of us coming back (for a junior day in February) to see if it’s really the school that we want to go to."

“At Texas, they know they have to have athletes to help their team out. They don't recruit a lot of people outside of Texas so it’s great to even talk to them. If they give us an offer, we're coming."

“I loved it. I love Texas. They really impressed me."

“(Muschamp) told us they would love to offer, but Mack Brown was at the ESPN deal and he said, only Mack Brown can give offers,” Elston said. “If we come back down, Mack Brown will be there and we'll probably get an offer then."

If Texas is going to take another DB, look for Charles Jackson to be their man unless they can sway someone else. Speaking of Jackson, rumor is he tried to commit to Florida earlier this week but it looks like Urban Meyer and Co. told him they were waiting for the higher ranked DBs on their board to make a decision first (Nick Waisome and Marcus Roberson).

He has decided to announce his college decision at a local yacht club in Gig Harbor on Monday, August 16th in front of his family, friends, coaches and teammates. If he ends up committing while in Austin, I'll let y'all know.

I agree. The staff will know one way or the other by the time he leaves Austin.

Quick little update...TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins actually moved his trip up a few days and will be in Austin with his mother today until Saturday. He mentioned that he didn't rule out a commitment while in town, but Texas is the overwhelming favorite at this point in time. Like Whisky Dog said, unless he does a complete 180 in a matter of a couple of days, he should be a Longhorn by 8/16.

Also, 2012 QB Matt Davis of Klein Forest will be in Austin this weekend. He wasn't able to make the first summer mini-camp because he was ill after a 7-on-7 tournament, so this is sort of make-up time for him. It actually may have worked out in Texas' favor because they'll have more one-on-one time with Davis without tons of other recruits in town. I'll post more about him when I hear how the visit went.

http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/08/05/texas-recruiting-weekly-asj-has-some-company-in-town/

The most interesting tidbit from that article is the rumor about DE Jermauria Rasco of Shreveport Evangel Christian also visiting Austin this weekend. Combine that with the rumor I read about a certain commitment coming down the pipe very soon, it could make for an interesting weekend. Considering ASJ is all but in the bag, I don't think the rumor applies to him. Maybe it's DE Jermauria Rasco...maybe it's RB Malcolm Brown. If we do not get either ASJ or Malcolm I consider this class a complete failure.

Muschamp probably won't be around and we used to get good recruits without him and still sucked ass at defense.

The class will be a failure.

TE Austin-Seferian Jenkins update...good news. He LOVES Austin (even updated his Facebook saying "I'm in love with Austin") and he finally received that coveted offer from Texas. He is keeping his schedule to announce on Monday, August 16th in his hometown of Gig Harbor, WA and will choose between Texas and Washington.

"It feels amazing to be offered by them. It's a school that I have always wanted to go to and now I have the opportunity to play there," said Seferian-Jenkins.

Now, for the bad news...depending on the way you look at his comments. The way he's talking can be interpreted in different ways. See his latest comments below:

"I'll be doing my research when I get home on plane tickets and travel costs for my mom and sister, how much for them to come to games," Seferian-Jenkins said. "Airline ticket costs (will be key)."

"She (mom) loved UT and she loves Washington. She doesn't have a preference."

"The class of the organization," he said when asked what stood out the most. "No matter what happens, I'll have the utmost respect for UT and I loved the people. They were amazing, so nice and honest."

IMO, these comments can be interpreted both positively and negatively.

a.) ASJ is a lock to Texas. He finally received the coveted offer from Texas (his dream school) and he seems a bit standoffish because he doesn't want to give too much away before his announcement ceremony. He wants to be respectful of his hometown people and give them the news he's going to Texas in person. I respect that, let the kid have his moment and he'll put on that Longhorn cap in nine days or so.

-----OR-----

b.) Remember that dreaded 180 degree turn we discussed earlier? Don't you know how much airline tickets from Washington to Austin cost already, ASJ? His last comment irks me the most. It's like he's giving himself an out with the Texas fans because he's having a last-minute change of heart about leaving his home state. The number ONE recruiting rule is to win over momma. Not sure Texas is at that point where Ms. Seferian will drop a few hundred bucks a year to watch her son play. It's almost as if she's humored ASJ by allowing him to visit this weekend. No momma, no commitment.

We shall see my friends. No word on DE Jermauria Rasco yet except that he's been seen on campus with other defensive lineman.

Whisky Dog
08-07-2010, 05:42 PM
Yep, right now I'd put the chances of landing him at 60%. I still think we have the edge, but you can't underestimate just how far Washington Is from Austin and how hard it is for a 17 yr old kid to think about leaving his momma with so much distance.

Even though he's a huge dude he still has the life experience of a kid, so no telling if he'll buckle or not to the though of leaving.

Dear Diary,

Man I hate working.

I think it’s mostly the whole social scene there. I’m not on the a-list of personalities at Walmart so Im given a smile and a “hi” and its back to business. I do have some people who will occasionally pay attention to me there, though. Eric, Bill, and Amy are people I can talk to w/out having to feel the need to prove who I am…to an extent. Eric is an old guy who works the closing shift in the sporting goods section and is probably my closest friend. Mostly when I talk to people, I like to give them the parts of my personality that I think they’ll like about me. I don’t necessarily tell them everything, just what I think they want to hear. I think that’s the best way to go considering my social status at school. No one wants to hear how I get beat up all the time. Anyways, this way, I look good and they are semi-interested. But there’s a problem. Im not that interesting. I don’t have the ability to switch topics and have some kind of anecdote about every little thing we talk about. I tried to tell them about my friend from the bathroom stall I talked about it in my last diary entry, but they just stared at me with a glazed look on their faces when I mentioned all of our cool, hilarious sayings about chodes and stuff. It was probably over their heads.

I love to listen to other people. Especially when they’re telling me about their personal problems. It shows they’re human and can confide in me. It makes me feel kinda important. Like when Paul was asking me for advice with Amy (#2). He was really hanging on every word I gave him. I told him exactly how I felt and I hoped it helped him. I wanted to ask him about my problems with that Asshole Jock Bo who keeps picking on me but I didn't. Last week Bo was hanging around the locker room before gym class and I knew something was up. Usually I make sure I'm the last one out of the locker room or the first if I get there early enough because I don't like to change in front of anyone. Well he kept hanging around me and waiting for me to come out of the locker room. Well sure enough, as soon as I got into the gym he pantsed me in front of the whole class. And even Coach Smith was laughing. Oh well, back to work…

If this went any further south, it'd be Mexican.

I'll likely be sleeping when ASJ commits (I'm in Ireland) so hopefully y'all will be able to figure out what his final decision is.

I wouldn't expect good news. It seems as if he's realized that it will be difficult on his mother if he does commit to Texas and probably wants to stay close to home. He's attended two or three Washington practices since his visit to Austin and it looks as if they will be his final choice. The bright side...there is supposedly a "mystery recruit" in the mix that has serious interest in Texas. I haven't heard much about him except that he's a better prospect than ASJ. My guess is he's not a TE. If I read anything more about him, I'll post it on here.

Damn, I was sleeping last night when this came down (and I knew we were close because Brown wasn't doing any interviews). It was 2:30 a.m. in Ireland. Great to hear this news after the whole ASJ fiasco this week. Hopefully the staff will now apply the full-court press to RB Aaron Green. Mack Brown should just cherry pick three more studs and wrap up the 2011 class.

Ok, fellas...I'm back in the country and I've done a lot of reading since I returned. I know there a couple of recruiting nuts on this thread that know a lot of the information before I post it, but I want to do a summary of the "goings-on" for those who are more casual readers. First of all, if you haven't started to read the weekly Longhorn recruiting updates from Recruitocosm (recruitocosm.fantake.com), please do so. Jesus Shuttlesworth and his staff are the most locked in reporters that I've come across and they usually break news before all of the pay sites. Their weekly updates are posted every Thursday and their latest one is the best I've read so far. Great read to get you up to speed on everything. It was a busy week with TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins picking Washington on Monday and RB Malcolm Brown committing to Texas on Wednesday.

Now, I just wanted to give my two cents on everything. First of all, RB Malcolm Brown has officially alleviated the fears of die-hard UT fans who have continually heard "we'll get the big fish next year" when it comes to RB recruiting. Well, Texas got their big fish and it's hard to describe how huge this is for the Texas program. The most important prospect since Vince Young?!? Mack Brown and Co. played his recruitment perfectly by not pressuring Brown to commit and not citing weaknesses of other schools (unlike Nick Saban). They continue to prove they're the best at what they do. With the Brown commitment, all of the needs for the 2011 class have officially been addressed. The staff can now cherry pick the best-of-the-best before wrapping up this class for good.

TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins...crazy recruitment, huh?!? As soon as I heard ASJ's quotes after visiting campus, I felt as if the dreaded 180 degree turn in Washington's direction was starting to happen. Seems as if he heard the words "offensive tackle" a bit too much when meeting with the Texas staff and decided then and there that Washington would be his final destination. Not sure if some of y'all had the opportunity to see his quotes from his press conference on Monday night, but it stirred up quite the controversy. He fed the local media a story basically saying that he had his mind made up in favor of Washington before he visited Texas and that the whole trip was to hype up his commitment ceremony and make Washington look good. He tried to to cover his tracks with an apology shortly thereafter showing his inexperience in dealing with the media, but the damage had been done. I don't buy his purported grand scheme to make Washington look good unless his $1,000 trip to Texas was financed by someone other than his mother (who is on a single income). His decision was made after he visited Texas...not before. He was all Texas before he visited. ASJ going in another direction is a blessing in disguise, IMO. It opens up another scholarship that was already penciled in. Plus, there's that mystery recruit we've been talking about...

TE Nick O'Leary...I'll admit that I didn't think the mystery recruit would be a tight end because ASJ was pretty much going to be icing on the 2011 recruiting cake. He definitely wasn't a "need." With the so many rumors floating around about RB recruiting, I honestly thought it was RB Brandon Williams. However, grandson of legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus and Rivals' newly ranked #1 TE in the country, Nick O'Leary, has initiated contact with the Texas staff. They say he's a down-to-Earth, straight forward, Mack Brown type of kid who doesn't exactly favor the offenses of his home state teams, Florida and Florida State. He was arguably the offensive MVP from last month's 7-on-7 event, Gridiron Kings, and he projects to be a better tight end prospect than ASJ. He's more offensively skilled, would be able to stretch defenses better and doesn't have the weight issues that ASJ potentially presents. He's a true TE all the way. It would be an embarrassment of riches if O'Leary fell into Texas' lap. Unfortunately, one of the last scholarships could come down to O'Leary or RB Aaron Green.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Nick-O'Leary-93564

RB Aaron Green...the opinions on the recruitment of Green are split right down the middle. I do believe that the Texas staff has had intermittent contact with Green for the past month and a half or so in order to focus on RB Malcolm Brown, but I don't believe that he's out of the picture completely. With the 2012 crop of RBs looking incredibly talented as well (more on that later), it makes sense that the staff would be taking a wait-and-see approach with Green. He'll have to recruit Texas a little bit if he does indeed want to play his college ball on the Forty Acres. It's possible that 2012 RBs Johnathan Gray and Barry Sanders, Jr. are viewed by the Texas staff as better overall prospects than Green and they don't want to ruin their chances with those two by having a crowded depth chart. IMO, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Take care of your business now and worry about the 2012 prospects later (especially when you consider that the recruitments of Gray and Sanders, Jr. will prove to be difficult). It's no guarantee that you get either of those prospects to come to Texas. Not sure what will happen with Green, but it's safe to say he's taken ASJ's spot on Texas' recruiting board.

CB Charles Jackson...poor Charles Jackson. The kid can't catch break. He was scheduled to make his college announcement earlier this week but for one reason or another, delayed it to a later date. Pretty sure he knew ASJ was going to commit to Washington and has put off his decision until he sees if he can finally get that coveted offer from Texas now that a scholarship has opened up. Looks like his Florida offer is no longer good as CB Nick Waisome committed to the Gators this week. I don't see Jackson being a part of this class if things go in the direction the Texas staff wants them to. There is just something there that the Texas staff is not completely comfortable with.

DE Jermauria Rasco...you don't take a handful of unofficial visits to one school unless your interest is genuine. Rasco has done so with Texas and his mother is reportedly completely won over by Mack Brown and the Texas staff. On top of that, she already plans on moving to Houston to be closer to family once Jermauria graduates from high school (regardless of what school her son picks). This one looks to be just a matter of time and patience is required. Word is the staff will wait on him until the end and has put no timeline on his recruitment.

RB Brandon Williams...Good luck at OU! It's unfortunate that he couldn't fit into Texas' plans. He's an absolute stud.

2012 RBs Johnathan Gray/Barry Sanders, Jr...Probably the best two RBs in the nation for the class of 2012 and Texas will be going after both. I have no idea what the staff's intentions are at this point (as far as offers go) because it's so early in the process, but both recruitments will be tough. Gray's father played at Texas Tech and Sanders, Jr.'s father obviously played at Oklahoma State, so Texas will have the legacy factor to overcome in addition to every major program in the country hounding these kids for their signature. Texas has been in frequent contact with both and they will have their opportunity to make their case. Hopefully Texas pounds the Red Raiders in Lubbock and Oklahoma State will have the horrible season like most think they will. It can only help Texas' chances. These will be two of the more popular recruitments to pay attention to for next year. Stay close.

I think of Boom and Mack wanted Charles Jackson he'd already be in, so I just don't see him getting an offer unless he blows up this year, the staff is convinced he isn't flaky and matured a bit, or Texas gets a bit desperate at the CB spot. With Cobbs apparently taking his turn at safety in fall practice it looks like the secondary might be a little more crowded.

IMO Green had to have known for a while now that Malcolm was going to Texas, so if that's the case I don't see why he didn't already commit to NU unless he's still very much undecided. That might be a good sign for a future Thunder N Lightning duo.

Not much recruiting news as we head into the week of the opening game. Here's the latest Recruitocosm:

http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/08/27/texas-recruiting-weekly-the-final-four/

The biggest news out of this one was the rumor that the Texas staff has contacted ATH LaDarius Brown of Waxahachie to fill out one more DB spot in the 2011 class. Akina likes size in the secondary and bringing in Brown would allow the staff to move ATH Mykkele Thompson (6'1", 175) strictly to corner while working Brown at safety. His size is ideal for that position (6'2", 190).

Things have been quiet on the recruiting front because the team is preparing for the season opener and coaches aren't allowed to call recruits. However, expect things to pick up a bit since coaches can start calling recruits beginning Wednesday, September 1st.

Not much going on, guys. Besides planning for Rice, the coaching staff has spent a good while contacting recruits since the September 1st deadline has passed. They are allowed to write and email juniors and they're allowed to call seniors. Here's a great list of the top 2012 recruits to keep you busy:

http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/09/02/2012-recruiting-tipsys-top-25-texas-targets/

The 2012 class will be an interesting one. There are a lot of guys who are legacies (WR Cayleb Jones, RB Johnathan Gray, S Edward Pope, RB Barry Sanders, Jr., etc.) and Texas will have to overcome that factor. Lots of these guys have brothers or fathers who've played at universities not named Texas. Speaking of 2012 recruits, here's a good read on RB Barry Sanders, Jr.:

http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/09/01/texas-rb-recruiting-2012-barry-sanders-jr/

Couple of other notes:

**Biggest news of the week (it's already been posted by TlongII) is the NCAA has ruled 2010 LB Tevin Jackson ineligible for this upcoming season. I find the timing by the NCAA bizarre since Jackson has worked out with the team all summer. There is apparentely an issue with his actual high school transcript, but not his test scores. The positive side of this is it gives Jackson more time to rehab his wrist that he injured in the Army All-American game and he was probably going to redshirt anyway. If all is taken care of, he should be able to re-enroll at UT by January 2011.

**2012 QB Matt Davis of Klein Forest does indeed have a torn ACL and he is out for the season. This clearly throws a wrench into his recruitment and it will be interesting to see if his injury will give some teams, including Texas, leverage with offering him as an athlete instead of a quarterback. His injury is unfortunate because the Texas staff was really hoping to evaluate his passing ability this season. He'll be busy rehabilitating his knee for a while.

**2012 RB Johnathan Gray will be in Austin for the Texas vs. Wyoming game next Saturday night, 9/11. Gray and Aledo will be playing against Lake Travis the night before. Check out that game if you're in the Austin area. Gray will most likely be in Lubbock the following week to watch Texas @ Texas Tech.

**DE Tevin Mims, RB Jeremy Hills and S Nolan Brewster have all requested to be redshirted by the staff. Mack Brown said he would follow-up on this after mid-season to see how things develop with the current roster. OL Tray Allen may take a redshirt as well because of a foot injury.

**Injury report: OL Tray Allen (foot), TE D.J. Grant (knee), DE Tevin Mims (shoulder), WR Greg Timmons (neck), RB/S DeMarco Cobbs (hamstring).

**OL Paden Kelley will not play against Rice due to a team rules violation.

Here's the weekly Recruitocosm that focuses mostly on 2012 prospects. Good stuff:
http://recruitocosm.fantake.com/2010/09/15/texas-recruiting-weekly-boiler-room-recruiting-pitches/

Things are looking good with DE Jermauria Rasco of Shreveport Evangel Christian and he looks to be just a matter of time. Not sure what to think about RB Aaron Green of San Antonio Madison...I've never heard so many rumors that are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Jesus Shuttlesworth of Recruitocosm says he's Nebraska bound and the coaches have cut off communication with him, and Jeff Howe of 24/7 Sports says he's very much in play and Green still has Texas in consideration. Who knows...I've let go of Green wearing burnt orange and will let him surprise me in a couple of months (if he picks Texas). If you told me he would cost Texas 2012 RB Johnathan Gray of Aledo, I don't want Green.

**Side note...sorry there's not many updates. Recruiting in September is usually pretty slow and the staff is just beginning their relationships with the 2012 prospects. Official visits for 2011 prospects are just around the corner so I'll let you know when DE Jermauria Rasco visits and if RB Aaron Green and TE Nick O'Leary ever make it to campus.

**2012 ATH Bralon Addison of Fort Bend Hightower will be in Lubbock this weekend as a guest of Texas Tech. He's really excited to watch Texas in person, though. I think Texas will look at bringing him in as a CB. He's one of the hotter prospects in Houston right now as he's having a great start to the season.

2012 QB Connor Brewer of Chaparral HS (Scottsdale, AZ) has scheduled a visit to Texas next month. The coaches already have an advantage in his recruitment because his sister is a freshman swimmer at UT. He'll be in town for the Baylor-UT game on 10/30.

I'll tell you, Reckoning...I was so pissed during and after that game that I could barely see straight. All I kept thinking about was Christian Westerman and his ENTIRE family traveled all the way from Arizona to see that clusterfuck of mammoth proportions. There was a lot of 2012 talent in the stands as well (see the post above). Forget waterboarding...play that game over and over for the Guantanomo detainees.

Good news is everyone in this class is in love with Texas and I don't see much changing that. As a Texas die-hard it's difficult for me not to get overwhelmed by paranoia when it comes to Malcolm Brown's recruitment. I can't see him decommitting unless the Horns absolutely tank because he's of such good character and he really likes Texas, but it's clear as day that Texas isn't going to be able to run the ball this season and the pro-style offense is what he was sold by the staff. How do you explain to Brown what's going on if the Texas offense goes four-wide for the rest of the year or you're 3-3 after the Nebraska game? He's the only one I worry about decommitting (even though I believe Texas was always his heavy favorite).
