View Full Version : Wizards, Celts in swap talks

In a dramatic move that would resuscitate their fading championship hopes, the Boston Celtics are discussing a deal with the Washington Wizards for forwards Antawn Jamison(notes) and Caron Butler(notes), league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday.

The proposed deal would send the expiring contracts of Ray Allen(notes), Brian Scalabrine(notes) and J.R. Giddens(notes) to the Wizards, a move that would signal the start of Washington’s rebuilding process.

The trade isn’t imminent, but talks have progressed and Celtics GM Danny Ainge has positioned his organization to make one of the boldest trade deadline moves in years. For the Celtics, ownership would have to agree to take on an additional $24 million in salary next season between Jamison and Butler. Jamison makes more than $15 million in 2011-12, but most owners are discounting those salaries because of an assumption that there will be a labor lockout and some, if not all, of that money will never be paid to the players.

Sources expected the two teams to talk further Friday and throughout the weekend in Dallas.

Both Boston and Washington still have discussions with several teams in the works, including a potential Wizards-Mavericks deal that league sources insisted was discussed well into Thursday night in Dallas.

Washington has offered Butler and DeShawn Stevenson(notes) for the Mavericks’ Josh Howard(notes) and a small expiring contract. There were strong signals on late Thursday that deal was getting close, but one source with knowledge of the talks said that Mavs owner Mark Cuban wasn’t prepared to commit to the move and wanted to keep shopping.

For now, that hesitancy leaves open the possibility of Boston’s aging core regaining its footing as a championship contender. Sources insist that Boston’s ownership is in an aggressive mode and determined to back Ainge in his desire to get younger and more athletic without sacrificing the short term for the long term. Boston desperately needs quickness on its frontline, and Jamison, a 6-foot-9 forward, and Butler, a 6-7 swingman, are players with All-Star pedigrees. With the unstable knee of Kevin Garnett(notes) and shoddy play of Rasheed Wallace(notes), this move could potentially give the Celtics the ability to fortify its frontcourt with two of the most desired players on the trade market.

Boston has swooned to fourth in the Eastern Conference, stumbling into the All-Star break with turmoil surrounding the team. The Celtics are 32-18, and just four games ahead of the surging Toronto Raptors in the Atlantic Division.

The possibility of Boston prying Jamison out of Washington has to be unsettling to the Cleveland Cavaliers. GM Danny Ferry has coveted Jamison for two years, and has made him his No. 1 priority at the trade deadline. The Cavaliers have several contingency plans for losing out on Jamison – topped with Indiana’s Troy Murphy(notes) – but losing Jamison to conference rival Boston would be particularly piercing for the Cavs.

Washington is still part of a lingering, but stalled three-team discussion with New York and Houston that would send Tracy McGrady(notes) to the Knicks, Al Harrington(notes) and Larry Hughes(notes) to the Wizards and Caron Butler and possibly Mike Miller(notes) to the Houston Rockets.http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Ar.KJYcs0C_MxPuufCMuj5w5nYcB?slug=aw-boswastrade021210&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

I think this is a smokescreen though. Why would Wizards do this deal when Cavaliers offers a better package? (Z, Hickson and a 1st rounder)

I know Wizards hates the Cavs, but come on, Cavs package makes much more sense (financially) than Boston.

I thought about it that if Boston does trade Ray Allen, it would kind of be an adjustment for me as an NBA fan knowing he does not play for them no more. Like if the Spurs traded Manu, when I think of the Celtics with Garnett, I also think of Pierce and Allen. If your Boston and the Wizards would do this trade, this would make them the clear favorites to win the NBA title, even if it means parting ways with Ray Allen. This would definitely shake things up for Cleveland, Orlando and Lakers.

that move makes alot of sense. Get Jamison who plays the same position as KG, and get Butler who plays the same position as Pierce.

It's posturing by the Wizards. The Cavs don't want to give them Hickson and they are throwing rumors out there to make the Cavs panic and cave in

Wait, Cavs does'nt want to give Hickson for Jamison? if so, then Wiz should look somewhere else.

You swing Pierce back to the SG, Butler at SF, and Jamison takes Rasheed's place.

LOL those that think this makes Boston instant champs... that is funny ..
Caron can play defense but with KG's knee in shambles unless they get a true "big" BOston aint winning shit this year.
They will scare some team and push them to 7 (Cleveland/Orlando?) but in the end no healthy KG = no ring ...

As for WIz no way I make a deal without one young stud back in return ...Hickson is no "stud" but has potential ...but remember he is being left wide open and has a great passer like Lebron to find him ...he would be good on Celts just not as good as he is on Cavs ...

I don't see it. Cavs will get Jamison when it is all said and done. On top of that, like someone said in this thread, no healthy KG= no championship or trip to the finals.

What is Boston giving up again for all that again?

Ray Allen's fat expiring contract, Scalabrine's expiring contract, and JR Giddens cheap expiring contract. But nothing is set in stone and it more than likely won't go through.

House/Tony Allen/Daniels/Jamison/Sheed/Baby

i like Jamison have watched him from hi splayer of the year seasons at UNC ...
But he is a "small" 4 a good rebounder and great scorer but cn not replace KG ...

As for Wiz understandd salary dumps but I would inist on getting young building block back ...

The reason the Memphis/Lakers swap worled they got 2 young prospects (Javaris/Marc Gasol) AND cap relief ...despite giving up the SUPERIOR talent (pau) they were able to hit on 1 of the 2 (marc)

If was the WIZ no way I give up my 2 best [plaers and not at leats get 2 young prospects ...

From Cavs: Hickson, Danny Green and a FUTURE first rounder (this one = 2nd rounder) plus cap relief

From Boston: They have no young assets I would want if Wiz

From Suns: Amare and Clark

From MAvs: Roddy HAS to be in deal ...

First of all why assume Washington will want to trade with an EC team?

That makes little sense.

sheesh..why do that when you can give the lakers Jamison and Butler for Morrison, Farmar and Sasha's contract ;)

Celtics better off intact? (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=mc-allstarnotes021210&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)
Marc J. Spears

The Boston Celtics have entertained offers for Ray Allen leading up to Thursday’s trade deadline and a league source told Yahoo! Sports that Rasheed Wallace is on the trading block, too. But instead of looking for a quick fix, the Celtics’ All-Star trio of Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett believe they should let the team heal and regain its swagger.

“I play with these guys every night and I’m happy with where we are at,” Garnett said. “We have to be more consistent with how we are playing. But I wouldn’t change anything.”

Said Pierce: “We can win a championship with the team put together right now. Once we get KG a little healthier and once I get back to 100 percent, we’ll be able to hit our stride and get more practice time in. People don’t understand. We haven’t had a lot of practice time over the last month because we’ve had a lot of injuries and played a lot of games on the road. Doc [Rivers] is one of those coaches that believe in rest. It’s a thin line between the two because you want to get rest, but at the same time we need the practice time. We will be able to get that in second half because there are not as many games.”

...Rasheed Wallace is on the trading block, too.

As disappointing as Dice's play has been, it could have been worse, a lot worse if we had picked up Rasheed. It's way past time for him to go softly into that dark night.
