How much do you want to spend? And do you want it to be Acoustic or Electric?

A good Acoustic guitar to begin on will run you at least 100 dollars, although I reccomend spending more on a starter guitar. If you shoot for something in the 300-400 dollar range you can get something that is much easier to play and sounds way better, and that goes a long way torwards making someone want to stick with it and not dump the hobby.

Buy a Fender.

They have Fender packs at musiciansfriend.com for 200 bucks.

Here it is...

a tasminie would be a great acoustic guitar to get started.

Great sound, brother to the IMO best acoustics out there the Takamine.

for a begginer, they sell tons of acoustic guitars on ebay for $0.99 and about $35 shipping with extra stuff thrown in. Its a cheap way to see if your kid will stick with it or not.

Guitars are an expensive addiction... I paid about 90 bucks for my first one, and I think it turned out okay.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll spend around $50 for an acoustic to make sure he is actually interested and not get on my nerves with a loud amp the learning process.

it's going to be hard to find a decent acoustic for 50 dollars, but for about 100 or so you can get something like a washburn d10 or the equivlant that will be a great guitar to learn on.

good luck, hope he digs it.

do try ebay, though.....I'm sure you'll find a lot of dads trying to sell the one's they bought for their kids that ended up *not* digging it.

Maybe you can find a good deal on a better one a little cheaper than brand new, but that's just been sitting in someone's closet (or under a bed, etc) for a while.

Give him a baseball and teach him to pitch left handed. You can thank me later.

Give him a basketball and MAKE him be the next Jordan.
