Anyone here familiar with replacing platters? I have a 500 gb Maxtor that went out and I want to take the platters out and put them into a working Maxtor I wonder if I should pay the 450-600 dollars for the kit.

Is the data on it worth twice as much as the kit or more?

the HD has 500 Gbs Auto Cad alone cost 5995.39 dollars
http://www.intercadsolutions.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=3

and only took up 500 MBs
there is still over 400 GB's go the math.

Well, I don't see why whoever owns that AutoCad couldn't install it in a new drive. I'm pretty sure that program still uses a USB dongle anyways.

But, let me warn you that changing platters requires you to have a clean room environment, and you will most likely screw up if it's the first time you're doing it. I would recommend you to practice with a few drives until you get it right before going for the real thing.

Does the kit include a magnet removal tool? That's if you need to remove the actuator arm. If not, you can add another $30 to the tally...

It's for work it comes out of supplies payroll I have a part time job doing data recovery for computech but those are working HDs I want to fix non working HDs. Before I ask them to buy the part for me I was wondering if it was worth it and has anyone here used it. I don't want to spend 600 dollars just to use it once, This job is sub contract work sometimes the phone doesn't ring for two weeks then sometimes it rings 3 times a day.

I have pics on an old drive I will try to find them.

Thanks for the info. I already took apart the 500gb Maxtor in a (unclean) room.

there is this small part that came off the arm.

It made a thick grove on the platter. as far as the magnetic removal tool that I will look into. also I have autocad and other shit on the drives but i have no idea how to use them. I just think the software may be worth the hassle. who wants to download 450GBs of software using 5Mbs WiFi from my neighbor? When I got all my shit I had roadrunner.

It's probably cheaper to pay $40/month for a year of broadband access... That should be more than enough time to download copious terabytes of data...

The only reason I would recommend you getting the kit and setup to replace HD platters is if you're starting a data recovery business, and the whole setup would be permanent. Otherwise, it's not really worth it.

BTW, the piece that fell off is most likely the reading head. Those should be just millimeter apart from the platter, but never touch it.

What happened BTW I can't stand the Maxtor external drives they all suck the ones i got. The 500 GB one went out in 30 days, the TB one went out in the second month.

What happened was the 500 gb one fell off my desk and hit the ground, it started to make a strange sound so I smacked it again, the sound would come and go. instead of turning it off and take all the data off I kept smacking it once a day, or when ever it went to sleep. Well one night after a few beers I was so pissed it wasn't responding so I dropped it on the floor on purpose then it made a real ugly sound, like if you ran over a garbage can and the lid stayed stuck underneath your car. it was like a license plate dragging off the bumper it didn't sound good. but Like a dumb ass I kept smacking it and then after a week or two of turning it on and smacking it I cracked it open.

BTW the maxtor has a small hole in the case so if you stick an object in the whole the HD comes sliding out. Good to know if you want to put it back together without damaging the case.

Anyway when I opened the HD I saw the arm resting on the platter the small needle or what ever goes at the end of the arm was missing the groove is real thick. kinda like a brake drum on your car when that metal clip digs into it.

So my goal is to see if I can get it to run for at least an hour after I take out the platter it will be good training since I am going expand my Data recovery business to nonworking HDs that is where the money is!

as far as the time Warner thing goes I still owe them 350.00 dollars and I am moving so that is out of the question and I also heard there is a 50 GB monthly limit is that true?

The whole HD mechanism is extremely delicate. Especially on high density drives that use perpendicular magnetic coding. If you're not afraid of destroying the drive in the process, it's always good learning! :lol

Check the Wiki page to get some basic idea of the parts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive

About the ISP thing, I have no idea. I'm not in Texas, so I don't know. Over here in NJ, I have FIOS, and last month alone we downloaded almost 1.5TB... so YMMV... :lol

Doesn't spending 450-600 dollars for recovery defeat the purpose of stealing all that software in the first place?

good luck with that

pretty heavy stuff. i can't believe what the professionals would charge for those services.

The software is borrowed, the original owner still has his copy. If I could download this HD tool I would.

There are people on Google that do it from 150.00 to 6,000.00 dollars.

But if you have any data that is questionable they may alert the authorities, any illegal porn or pirated software. Since I hope to start a private data recovery this summer I can assure the customer his or her's privacy.

The actual taking apart the HD is not the problem it's trying to find the exact same HD to do the switch.

update: ok I have a place to live and a room to do this. I only make 75.00 to 150.00 a week since I don't pay rent, or pay for food and WiFi,

I can't work full time it will get in the way of my benefits I have not received yet still waiting on updates. I thought I was going to make more money like 100.00 a day,but until I learn the software and can do my own audits i will have to settle for low pay. Then I have to pay Alamo50 and dannyT for helping me out.

what i am saying is i, want to go half with someone so i don't have to pay the whole 600.00 hundred dollars. Maybe someone here wants to fix a few HDs also?

If not I will just put away 150.00 a month until i have it please post any links to one that is cheaper than 600.00

thank you

HD recovery from non working drives can be a good business if you get the word out. Especially if you make it known that you won't go to the cops. Good luck with it.

I never understood why someone would go to the cops, it's like paying for a massage and the lady giving the massage phones your wife to tell her, why would you do anything to kill your business.

besides i don't look at peoples data all i see are yellow folders so there is nothing for me to report.
I heard somewhere they want PC tech type people to go to private detective school have you heard about that?

Whisky Dog

I haven't heard about it for private detective school, but there is a growing market for hard core techies to also train in forensic investigative techniques so big corps and govt can use them to fight a lot of the identity theft and cyber crimes that are everywhere right now.
