View Full Version : More likely to be a Spur in 2010/2011 season : Manu Ginobili or Matt Bonner

I don't even have to wait for the deadline . . .
I say Bonner.
Why on earth would he ever start another game after all that's happened before . . .
He's coming back.
Adios and good luck Manu.

If the Spurs win the champiionship or at the minimum get to the NBA Finals, I can see Manu returning. Otherwise, he'll be gone in free agency.

Imagine the Spurs brought Luke Bonner to Austin so that it'll help lure Matt Bonner back to SA for a long-term contract..

As for your thread, I'd say Manu. The Spurs are unlikely to have much room to sign non-minimum players after they lock up the key players. Bonner will get more than the minimum.
Now Michael Finley on the other hand could be a different story :depressed

I think if there's no trade for a wing ( with a contract for next season like Salmons ) by the deadline, Manu's getting his extension within a month.

what are the cba rules on extensions? I thought there was a deadline that already passed . . . ?

There are various rules depending on contract status (length, when signed, etc.).
In Manu's case, an extension can be signed at any point from now until June 30th. On July 1st, he becomes a FA.

I'd say Manu.
If the Spurs get TT or Splitter, then Bonner projects as the 5th big next year. For the Spurs, that will be a one-year, minimum salary slot.
In that case, Bonner takes his Canadian bride and his new Canadian passport and signs with Toronto for the LLE. His popularity there to be enhanced after he leads the Canadian team to a surprising spot on the medal stand in Turkey.

True about the Bonner Canadian thing . . .
But the thing I will remember about Bonner and the other bigs who may push him down the rungs . . .
The Spurs gave already gave him a 3 year Scola deal once, and when they signed him to it he wasn't even in the rotation, he was strictly a blowout scrub. Not only that, but they weren't even expecting him to be in the rotation for another season because Horry the floor spreading 4 was still under contract. They flat out gave Scola money to a guy for 3 years knowing full well that he probably wouldn't even get a chance to play a role that first year.
If they could did that, they could sign him for 2-3 per while Manu goes somewhere else for 7-8.
Oh, and one more thing

Who could I see returning next season for sure: Keith Bogans (Pop loves him), Matt Bonner (ditto)
Maybe: Manu (depending on the money and other teams but i hope he comes back), Finley (if Pop realizes he's as old as Theo, he'll be gone. Otherwise he gets a 1 year deal. Kill me if this happens)
Gone: Ian (Pop gave up), Theo (a year older), Mason (he'll sign with Denver or Orlando),

I thought you didn't want this become a Scola thread. I won't go any further along that that line except to say that I don't see the 2007 situation the same way you do, but I have absolutely no interest in revisiting that fiasco.
Going forward, the circumstances in 2010 will be fundamentally different and I don't believe anything that happened in 2007 helps us predict what will happen in 2010.
I believe its more likely that Manu is a Spur next season, but neither one of them are solid bets to return.

It should be Manu, emphasis on should, because I don't see RJ replacing him anytime soon.

I don't know. More than ever Manu seems ready to test free agency and go another way. Like he said it's going to be all business this time and the Spurs won't be able to offer him much at all. Some teams might offer him more and if the Spurs don't get far in the playoffs this year Manu's probably gone. Interesting though that if the Spurs really thought that Manu was just going to leave them at the end of the season, why aren't they actively trying to trade him to at least get some talent for him? Are they confident that he might be back? Are they considering offering him a extension at the end of the season before he hits free agency? Do they think they can replace him if he leaves? It'll be interesting to see.

I share your sentiments. Re why the Spurs aren't trying to shop him before the trae deadline, I think its out of respect for Manu. They want manu to have a chance to prove himself and if he does so, he will be able to justify a worthy contract, either from the Spurs or some other team. Also. trading him would create such a big hole in the SPurs with no assurance his replacement will be able to fill. Looks like Pop is determined that its make or break with the current roster.

I just imaged a team with Manu and Scola togheter and had an orgasm. Argentinian players are beasts when they are with a friend.

good thread objective.
I agree, PopaBonner probably back for Sir Stubborns continued ruination of the Spurs.
Unfortunately could probably have the same thread for Finley.

I have no clue what is going through Pop's head right now. I imagine a dark world filled with spiders, snakes, bats, tattooed vampires and mad scientists with bubbling beakers of green goo.
I hope Bonner and Finley move along and take Theo and Bogans with them.
Manu is a tough situation. Will the Spurs extend him? Do they believe his decline is too advanced? Do other NBA teams think he is worth the risk? Is he involved in trade deadline talks? Why wasn't he traded for Butler last year? Does he want to be a Spur?
I love Manu. We are 3 championships richer because of him, but I can't get a hold of how he figures into the Spurs future.

It looks like we're not going to make a move. In that case, I see the Spurs offering an extension to Manu shortly. I don't know for how much or how long, but looking at how important he is to this team right now, I would say that's a no brainer.

I agree, but Manu will have to provide assurances that he will not play in Turkey this summer for negotiations to be successful.

I've been suspecting that's the reason the Spurs are waiting out on it...

It has to be. If they cut a deal now, the Spurs take on the risk that Manu still may break down and Manu takes less money that he would get in the summer after a healthy season and playoffs. Both sides give a little and get a little.
I can see the Spurs taking the risk that Manu get hurt playing for San Antonio, but I don't think they'll take the risk that he gets hurt playing on the NT.
Edit: So you gonna cheer tomorrow when Bonner is introduced as the starting center?:stirpot:
