Off to a strong start to the second half of the season, the San Antonio Spurs are looking to continue their push up the Western Conference standings. A matchup with the struggling Philadelphia 76ers should give them a good chance to do so.

San Antonio tries for its third win in Philadelphia since 1999 on Friday night when it takes on the 76ers, who are trying to get back on track following a season-high winning streak.

After closing the first half with a 111-92 victory over Northwest Division-leading Denver on Feb. 11, the Spurs (31-21) continued their eight-game road stretch with a 90-87 win over Indiana on Wednesday.

Tony Parker, who missed the Denver game with a strained left hip flexor, scored 28 points in 39 minutes to keep San Antonio within a game of Southwest Division-leading Dallas. The Spurs have won three of four.

“I got tired in the second half and my hip was getting tired,” said Parker, who had 16 points and eight assists in a 97-89 win over the 76ers on Nov. 29. “We’ll see what we do for the next game, but overall I was OK.”

Parker and the Spurs have not fared well in Philadelphia lately. San Antonio has lost seven of nine road matchups with the 76ers since the 1999-2000 season.

In the teams’ last meeting in Philadelphia, Thaddeus Young scored 27 points and Andre Iguodala added 21 with eight assists and five rebounds in the 76ers’ 109-87 rout last Jan. 16.

In 10th place in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia (20-33) could use another strong effort against San Antonio after losing two straight following a season-best five-game winning streak.

Philadelphia fell 105-78 to Miami on Tuesday in its first game following the All-Star break. The 76ers shot 37.9 percent from the field in their most lopsided defeat since a 31-point loss to Boston on Nov. 3.

“They killed us in every facet of the game,” said Allen Iverson, who scored four points off the bench after missing the previous five games to help take care of his ill daughter.

With Willie Green leaving Tuesday’s game with a sprained left shoulder, 76ers coach Eddie Jordan could re-insert Iverson into the starting lineup Friday.

Iverson will face San Antonio in a 76ers uniform for the first time since piling up 42 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in a 103-100 overtime victory Feb. 15, 2006. He has averaged 28.8 points and 5.5 assists in 25 career games versus the Spurs.

Tim Duncan, who would have taken the court against Iverson on Sunday if the 76ers guard didn’t pull out of the All-Star game, looks to bounce back from Wednesday’s 4-of-23 performance from the field. It was the worst shooting effort of Duncan’s career in games in which he had more than 18 attempts.

Duncan, though, grabbed 26 rebounds - 10 in the fourth quarter - and added five assists.

“That is what’s great with T.D. - even if he has a bad shooting night he’s always going to do other stuff,” Parker said.

Duncan had 22 points and six boards Nov. 29 and is averaging 24.5 and 11.4 in 12 career games in Philadelphia.

The home team has won the last five meetings in the series.

got an extra ticket?

No, but you can still get some fairly good ones in my section for as low as $79 bucks (http://www.stubhub.com/philadelphia-76ers-tickets/76ers-vs-spurs-2-19-2010-871332/)

The stubhub office to pick them up is two blocks from the arena.

I won't be drinking because I have to drive back to New Jersey afterwards, but both my wife and me will be decked out in Spurs gear also!

And I know exactly what you mean by last year...
At least Andre Miller is not playing for them anymore... :lol

Should be an interesting game, with only 13 players on the roster, and Pop reverting to a 08-09 kind of game plan (starting Bonner, smallball, etc), but I think we'll come away with the "W"... I went to the first meeting with Philly back in november (section 121) right before AI rejoined the team, was a good game

I complained a lot about Bogans starting the other night, but he had one of his best games all season and Jefferson put in a lot more effort than I'm used to seeing from him this year, so I'm not going to complain for the time being. We should really do work against a team like Philly though. I am interested in watching them though, haven't seen the 76ers play in forever, so I'll be looking at the two AIs and Jrue Holiday. Should be fun. We need the double digits W. I'm thinking maybe Antonio McDyess and Matt Bonner should switch rolls though, but we'll see how it works (starting/bench wise.) I'm not saying I want Dyess to shoot any threes. :lol

Spurs continue road trip versus 76ers (http://www.seattlepi.com/scorecard/nbanews.asp?articleID=189485)

The San Antonio Spurs aim for a third straight win on a season-long road trip that continues with tonight's matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers from the Wachovia Center.

San Antonio has posted a 4-2 record thus far on this eight-game trek and opened its post All-Star break schedule with Wednesday's 90-87 verdict over Indiana, in which Tony Parker scored a game-high 28 points in his return to the Spurs' lineup.

Parker, who had sat out San Antonio's 111-92 triumph at Denver on February 11 with a left hip flexor strain, made 11-of-20 field goal attempts to help compensate for an overall poor shooting performance by his team. The Spurs made just 35.4 percent of their tries from the floor, with perennial All-Star Tim Duncan going 4-of-23 and finishing with just eight points.

Duncan was a force on the boards, however, as the two-time NBA MVP pulled down 26 rebounds to help the Spurs prevail. San Antonio outrebounded the Pacers by a 56-47 margin on the evening.

"The story of the game was the glass," said Indiana head coach Jim O'Brien. "They got 20 points on second chance opportunities."

The win kept the Spurs one game behind Dallas for first place in the Southwest Division, and the club is currently tied with Oklahoma City for the fifth playoff seed in the Western Conference.

Philadelphia has an uphill battle in regards to reaching the postseason, sitting 6 1/2 games back of Charlotte for eighth place in the Eastern Conference at the moment. The Sixers have lost their last two contests and were routed by visiting Miami in their first outing following the break, dropping a 105-78 decision to the Heat on Tuesday.

Thaddeus Young scored 16 points to lead the Sixers, who shot a mere 37.9 percent overall and made just 1-of-12 attempts from three-point range. Allen Iverson returned to the lineup after sitting out five straight games to attend to his ill daughter, but mustered just four points on 1-of-7 shooting.

"I can not and will not use (my absence as) an excuse," Iverson said. "It was [the Heat's] first game after the break, too. They took care of their business; they just killed us in every facet of the game."

Philadelphia made one deal prior to Thursday's trade deadline, sending reserve guard Royal Ivey and seldom-used center Primoz Brezec to Milwaukee in exchange for rookie guard Jodie Meeks and center Francisco Elson. Meeks averaged 4.1 points and nearly 12 minutes of playing time in 41 games with the Bucks, who took the former Kentucky star in the second round of last year's draft.

San Antonio also made a minor move on Thursday, shipping veteran center and one-time Sixer Theo Ratliff to Charlotte for a second-round draft choice in 2016.

The home team has won the last five meetings in this series, with the Spurs' most recent win in Philadelphia coming on January 21, 2007. San Antonio did come through with a 97-89 victory over the 76ers in the Alamo City on November 29, with Duncan amassing 22 points to lead the way.
