What? You're such a racist moron.
When did tourism come into conversation in this thread, dumbass? Oh, you just needed something to call back on so you could segway into dissing San Antonio, even if that something was made up. Bravo.
You think San Antonio is some paradise land that can support an NFL team. Get back to reality.

LOL, what's your problem? No penis envy, because you don't have one.
I called SA a paradise, where?
I said it can support an NFL team? Yeah I did, because it can and guess what, facts back me up.
So with that, again, what's your problem? Did some guy named Antonio bang your girl?

lol Buddy Holly getting pissed at anyone in this thread who doesn't agree with his fantasy that San Antonio is actually a nice city people want to visit.
While I know you are just baiting Buddy Holly into a flame war, I'd just like to point out San Antonio is rather high ranking as a leisure travel destination, although that is mostly regional from TX, OK, LA, NM, and Arkansas.
I guess this message board allows racist stuff.
This message board is largely unmoderated. Don't take anyone too seriously, especially when someone is aiming at a specific person.

Essentially the governmental powers that be around here are dead set against this fledgling league. Also included in the nay group is UTSA. This league is not a viable NFL replacement nor will it ever be. For San Antonio or anybody else. The best course of action for San Antonio to take as well as UTSA is to tell this fly-by-night outfit to go away.
But you must agree that we are not going to get an NFL team anytime soon and the right thing to do is support the football we can get.. UTSA is fine; but really do you think the dome will fill up for a game like UTSA vs McMurry or UTSA vs the University of Podunk. No, the best football we can get at this time is the UFL and we should support the San Antonio team. And for those like you that have illusions about the NFL coming to San Antonio, I'm sure the UFL will sign a lease stating that in the case we get an NFL team: the UFL team will vacate.

Supporting this little ufl is not the right thing to do for San Antonio. The only thing you'll get is a mostly empty stadium and another reason for the NFL to look down its nose at San Antonio. What could you expect on a good night with the ufl? 4000 or 5000 desperate souls on a Friday night in high school football country? I doubt it. No, I say let this sorry substitute fade away and let's hold out for the NFL. It'll be worth it.

I pointed this out before, but the UFL averaged about 10k, and San Antonio has put up about 15k for each of its previous pro-real-football teams.
A bad night would be 10k, a good night 20k, in all likelihood.
And unless the NFL hits financial difficulty, they won't put a team in SA. Aka, not likely to see one in SA anytime soon.

The NFL is not coming any time soon, maybe not ever.
If the UFL can put some people in the seats and the dome can profit a bit from it, it'll be worth it.

It's like watching a bunch of weary travelers waiting to jump on a sinking ship. You know you won't reach your destination because the ship is already sinking. But you want to ride on it anyway just to say that you rode on it and got a little fresh air before you all sink to your watery deaths. This analogy seems to me to be quite accurate. Those that support this dying patient of a league have even said as much.
I look at this venture in terms of how it can help San Antonio get into the NFL, strictly. And I for the life of me I cannot see any redeeming qualities that could come from this town being in this league. Let alone helping the city in any way gain ground with the NFL and how it looks at candidate cities.
About the only, and believe me the only, redeeming aspect of having a ufl team in town would simply be the entertainment value. I mean just a bunch of people going down to the rockpile or Dome and grabbing a few beers and watching some low-quality football. That would be it.

The UFL coming or not and being successful or not will have little to no bearing on the NFL coming or not.
If the UFL in some form can help make the Alamodome not operate in the red or help them operate more in the black, I'm for it.

There's nothing that's going to help SA get in the NFL except for the NFL getting into much more serious financial troubles (like devaluing of TV contracts, etc)

Which is why most people want it to come. Other than providing small amounts of funds for the Alamodome (and whatever the UFL decides to contribute to the city in the form of donations), there IS no benefit other than entertainment.
Missions, Rampage, and Stars don't really bring any benefit but entertainment, so should we get rid of them?
There's not much in the way of negatives for allowing the UFL to play here, either, so why not?
If the UFL in some form can help make the Alamodome not operate in the red or help them operate more in the black, I'm for it.
Yup. Alamodome brings a lot of visitors to town. Getting it less red/more black is a good idea.

No startup league is stable. Go back and look at the relocation/fold rate of the NFL and NBA in the early going.
The one's that moved are ones that shared a market with the NFL. The UFL was very pleased with the response in Vegas and Orlando, considering they didn't have a real marketing campaign last year.
But yeah, investing in any new sports league is pretty much a guaranteed loss of investment. If it succeeds, the returns are huge, but it's pretty much guaranteed to be a loss.
Doesn't affect me, and shouldn't affect the city, so I don't mind ;)

Burns was talking this morning about the NFL buying a big share of it and turning it into a minor league system where teams can call up players if need be.
One of the reasons he mentioned would be that it would be beneficial for the NFL in case of a players' strike. They wouldn't be able to go play for the UFL since the NFL would own it.
I wouldn't mind seeing that, although I don't see a minor league team filling up the dome.

When it comes to pro football San Antonio will have to settle for the next best thing.
That's just the way it is. We were not big enough or didn't have the right stadium at the right time. Dallas and Houston were way ahead of us and had individuals who were willing to invest. Now the NFL is all powerful and it is the largest and richest sports league in the country . It does not need to expand. However, San Antonio was in the right place, at the right time and had investors for pro basketball . That's why we have the Spurs.
But, if you want to watch regular season pro football in person and cheer for the San Antonio team; it has to be the UFL. Let's at least give it a chance.

Most of you are aware of my position on this sorry, minor league matter so I won't repeat it. Suffice it to say that if this bunch of third-rate knuckleheads suddenly has trepidations about coming to San Antonio then so be it. The league wouldn't be missed by many and few would be disappointed that the so-called league didn't come to town.
Just keep following other NFL teams San Antonians until the genuine article finally arrives in the not too distant future. And anybody who still believes that the NFL isn't coming really has a low opinion of San Antonio and a misconception of what type of city the league wants.

We got our taste of NFL football with the Saints during Katrina and get our annual tickler from the Cowboys training camp however that might end after next season. We already have one college team in UIW. Oh wait, all seems to have been forgotten about that team which will be the case with UTSA because it doesn't garner enough attention. If a UFL team which has some potential NFL talent on it comes to the city and provides some excitement on the field, then what is there not to like? We as a city have become so fixated on an NFL team coming to San Antonio but its not going to happen. Do you really think the voters would approve a tax hike to help fund a new stadium? And that would have to be before we knew we were getting a team. Our "city leaders" have done enough to waste potential sports opportunities here in San Antonio, I hope they don't screw this one up also.

It was the then commissioner Paul Tagliabue who was most instrumental in keeping the Saints from moving to San Antonio permanently in 2006. He was dead set against San Antonio getting an NFL club. Jones had nothing to do with the decision. Now that Tagliabue is gone the city has an excellent shot at getting a franchise. Current commissioner Goodell does not have the same negative attitude toward San Antonio that his predecessor had.

Like yourself I've written on here many times why San Antonio is and will continue to be an attractive spot for an NFL team. Besides my own opinions I can offer this study which I've posted on here before but will post again on how SA is very probabilistically likely to get a franchise. according to that chart, Jacksonville had a 9% chance of getting a team, Buffalo a 17% chance, while San Antonio and Salt Lake City should have already have teams in place at 56% and 51% chances.
I'm guessing those guys that wrote that paper are working on their degrees? Turns out that's the same place that Mike Leach got his degree at. Interesting.
They got it partly right when they said:
The distance to the closest NFL franchise city is a major aspect for the location of a franchise. The NFL does not want all of its teams in one part of the country because there will be interest only in that part of the country, not the whole United States. This is especially important for a sport driven by national television revenues.
Where they miscalculated San Antonio's position is when they said this:
Furthermore, locating a new franchise close to an existing franchise (generally up to 75 miles) would financially hurt the owner of the latter. The league does not approve of these territorial infringements.
SA is a bit of an anomaly because although we are about 275 miles away, we are still seen as something of a secondary market to the Cowboys.
Case in point:
Giants-Cowboys Sees Largest Overnight In "Sunday Night" History
NBC earned a 16.5 overnight Nielsen rating for its "SNF" telecast featuring Giants-Cowboys from 8:30-11:45pm ET, marking the best overnight ever for a "SNF" telecast. The first regular-season game ever at Cowboys Stadium is the best overnight for any NFL regular-season primetime game since Broncos-Dolphins earned a 17.4 overnight in December '98. Giants-Cowboys was up 65% over the Emmy Awards on CBS (10.0 overnight rating), and when airing head-to-head from 8:30-11:00pm, "SNF" outrated the Emmy Awards by 71.1%. In primetime, "SNF" also drew a 12.8 overnight, giving NBC the win for the night and marking the net's best Sunday average (excluding the Super Bowl and the Olympics) since January '04. Dallas-Ft. Worth topped all metered markets with a 41.7 rating, followed by San Antonio (30.4) and Austin (25.6). N.Y. earned a 19.3 rating, which was tied for 13th (THE DAILY).
We had a higher market rating than NY that night for the Cowboys/Giants game.
TVs are already turned on here for the NFL. The NFL does not have any desire to put a team here because of that.

I dont see the threat to UTSA football as Wolfe seems to be so adamant about. There is a fan base of students and alumni that are going to commit to UTSA football at the dome, so that shouldn't be an issue. Division I football is great and all but it doesn't need to be the only option for football in San Antonio. And by the looks of it, UTSA will be playing ITT-Tech, Kaplan, etc. the first couple of years so once the excitement wears off, what will be the real draw for your average football fan in San Antonio? If a minor league team with NFL caliber talent is what we need to get behind, then so be it. At least its an option for the city.

I honestly had to look up some of the schools that are UTSA opponents. It will be those type of opponents for the next several years. We just can't sit an wait for UTSA to play Baylor at the dome in 2018. But , we can have quality pro football in 2010. The UFL is the next best thing to the NFL and I think we can all agree that San Antonio isn't getting an NFL team anytime soon. So let's support the UFL now.
Blake, the NFL owns the San Antonio market with the Cowboys. But it only takes one owner with the will and resources to make it happen (to bring a team here). The NFL may not like it or want it, but I don't think they would step in and actually try to stop it. That undermines the value of ownership. When the Sonics in the NBA were moved to Oklahoma City, the league and league owners didn't stop it even though the Mavericks had a nice base there. Moving to a really small market wasn't good for the league at all but it would have jeopardized the leverage of all league owners to bargin with their city for new contracts, new stadiums, etc. if they had voted down the move.
That said, there is not reason right now to put a team in San Antonio. No owner has the desire, so it's just not going to happen in the foreseeable future. But I wouldn't argue that it can't if the right circumstances arose, which they can (quickly and unexpectedly).

Well, the other owners have to approve, so it takes more than half the owners. Also, there has to be proof of financial gain for the team in question to prevent the other owners from saying no. That will prolly require an agreement on a new stadium here, since there's no gain in value for broadcast contracts, etc, to move here.

So let's support the UFL now.
.............and we know the teams in the UFL??? :lmao

Well, it's a farily bad comparison anyway.
I think the point was that if you look at the UFL schedule and you see Las Vegas Locomotives, Orlando Tuskers, Hartford Colonials, and Sacramento Mountain Lions, at least you've know those towns, even if you have no other information about the teams.
If you look at the UTSA schedule, unless you are truly hardcore, you'd have to do some googling to even find what city/state a lot of those teams are in.
It's kind of hard to get excited when I have no idea (off the top of my head) where Northeastern State, McMurry, Bacone, Northwestern State, McNeese State, and Minot State are located (not even which state).
At least with Southern Utah, South Alabama, UC Davis, and Georgia State you have a rough idea.

To me, it means basically the same thing. It really doesnt have anything to do with the location of the team, its not knowing who the hell the team is or who the hell the players are.............very much like the Utsa opponents mentioned above. The locomotives, Tuskers and Mountain lions??? are you shitting me? :lol Those schools are second tier, just like the UFL. :rolleyes

Makes a difference to me. There are some areas of the country I just love to cheer for or against, so if I know where a team is from it makes a difference in my interest level. For example, with UTSA I'm most likely to go to the Southern Utah game at the dome in 2012, just because I love cheering against anything Utah.
The UFL had a lot of players people were familiar with last year, and probably will this year, too, but that does involve looking up something about the UFL. In fact, they might pick up some pretty decent players considering the market is getting flooded with the NFL teams dropping their overpriced players since there is no cap ramifications right now.
And yeah, the UFL has some wacky names, but at least they aren't as odd as Mad Catz, etc, and actually have some relevance to the markets they are in.
UFL is indeed second tier, but UTSAs opponents are 3rd, 4th, or 5th tier. Not that it bothers me, since UTSA has to start out like that and they are working hard to get better opponents.

Its all good............we just see it differently. Im just totally uninterested in the UFL. I mean completely. Not that Im right or anything, because we all have our own preferences. :toast

With the UFL ; you will get to know the teams in a short time. Some of the cities are also basketball rivals. If you follow pro football you will also know some of the players. It is second level pro football; but that is way beyond second level college football. If you watched Versus last season you should agree that it is quality football, if you didn't you should at least give it a chance. The main problem I have with anti-UFLer's is that many think that if they don't like it and don't want to see it; then city shouldn't allow anyone to see it.

Yeah, that's the attitude that's been bothering me as well. It doesn't bother me coming from Hickey (since it's her job to look after the best interest of her programs, and obviously having any competition is bad for her program).
Like lebomb said, we all have our own preferences and it seems retarded to me to try and enforce our preferences on others.

Agreed.

It's only a first year schedule. The team is made up mostly of underclassmen, so you have to schedule easy the first year or so, and that means playing teams you've probably never heard of. It will get much more interesting in the years to come, but UFL could hurt the development of the program by stealing sponsors and casual fans. If it does that, then utsa football's long term potential could be diminished. It's just not worth it for a minor league team that will probably fold in 2 years or so.

I understand about the schedule. I mentioned that it doesn't really bother me, just not something that gets me excited. I've mentioned in other places I thought it was a very good 1st year schedule.
As far as the stealing of sponsors and casual fans go, Michael Sawaya said it all. UTSA has not shown anything to suggest that would be the case to a significant degree. The demographics and fan bases between college and pro are significantly different for the most part. Yeah, you might lose a little who were settling for UTSA because they got something that fit them better, but it's not likely to be enough to seriously hamper UTSA's development.
In the meantime you are passing up guaranteed city revenue in a down economy.
If the UFL is willing to sign a one year lease, or a multi-year lease with a city escape clause, I don't see any reason not to bring them in. If it does turn out they are significantly hurting UTSA, just kick them out. And that's if they survive long enough to truly interfere with UTSA which starts a full year later.

If it's going to fold why worry? The problem is UTSA not having confidence in their own program. They want to be able to force feed us UTSA football; without us having a choice. It's wrong and shallow. San Antonio has a 2 million metro market and is big enough for both. With major national sponsorship that the UFL has (Motorola, Men's Warehouse etc) and a television contract you would think UTSA would be open to cross marketing. It would be different if it was the NFL. An NFL team would dominate everything , but UTSA would be silent for fear of looking stupid.

The problem is what's allowed within NCAA rules. There could be some serious issues there.
Plus the national sponsors the UFL has are not going to affect UTSA at all. It's local level sponsors that any co-marketting would involve. The UFL is not going to carve our a piece from its national contracts to give to a college in one city.

But it wouldn't be surprising that co marketing deals are in place with Sac St and UConn, that involve national sponsors to at least some degree.
It also hard to imagine a UTSA sponsor would just jump over to the UFL, because they are in town.
If it's going to fold why worry?
Because it would've disrupted the fragile growth phase of utsa football for nothing.

An NFL team is an NFL team. It would be great for the city way beyond however much it diminished utsa football.
A UFL team adds nothing and I'm not going to repeat the negatives.

Fragile growth , this is a small college football team, this adds very little; IWC and Trinity are already here. Very few people will give a crap.
The UFL team adds entretainment value and adds to the financial viability of the Alamodome.Again you seem you keep to referring to San Antonio as a small town that can't support more than one team.Very shallow and small townish.; maybe if this was Laredo or Odessa you would have a point but San Antonio ; this is a city of over 2 million.

Andy, Im willing to bet you anything just as many or MORE people will give two SHITS about the UFL.

College football at least had the potential to sell out the Alamodome one day. UFL does not.

You can't really say that. "One day" is way too ambigious and leaves to many things open for interpretation. If we're just talking possibilities, then the UFL does indeed have the possibility, just not a very good one.
UTSA will only sell out the dome if a school with a big local following plays (UT, A&M, Army, etc), though. Not many programs can sell 65k+ to random games.
Besides, what's the relevance in ability to sell out the dome? From the city's perspective the only thing that matters is them being able to pay for their use of the dome.

Average attedance was less than 10K for the UFL's first season. I guarantee UTSA averages more than that in its first season, at least 75% more at minimum.

Only if you count the abandoned markets of New York and San Francisco. The league averaged about 15k in Las Vegas and about 12k in Orlando, without any real marketing. With a normal marketing campaign here in San Antonio they'd probably draw 15-18k. (we've historically put out 12-15k anyway).
Which is what I've always said UTSA would average in year one. I think year 2 for UTSA will drop off a little, though.
But again, what's the relevance?

The relevance is obvious; attendance is a primary gauge of interest and long term sustainability.

Except we were talking hypothetical. Unless your post had nothing to do with what you quoted. Which considering that seems to be a pattern the last few posts of yours, I wouldn't be surprised.
I was pointing out your "one day" comment was BS since you can't accurately predict the future.
Also, there's no attendance data for UTSA, unless you want to extrapolate from attendance for other sports, which I don't think you want to (I don't think it would be accurate) ;)

You're reading way too deeply into my comments. But c'mon, I think attendance from other UTSA sports supports my premise that competing with minor or major league franchises hurts utsa sports. If it were the NFL, then I'd say too bad for UTSA because it's the NFL. But it's the UFL, so I say too bad to it.

I don't think it has much to do with competition from other franchises. Most college sports aren't going to have very good attendance anyway. Basketball, football, and baseball are really the only one's that stand a chance. I think the bigger issue is just the fact that until UTSA announced football, no one really even attempted to give a damn.
Since the Board of Regents approved football, I've noticed a pretty hefty increase in coverage of UTSA athletics in general, and if that keeps up, UTSA will likely see at least a slight uptick in attendance for the other sports as well.
I was actually trying to see how UTSA baseball was doing the other day and ended up having to go to the Southland website to get anything! :lol MySA had a recap of like one game, and that was 5 or 6 games prior to when I was looking.

I think UTSA attendance will be OK ; but let's not over inflate it.
They will probably use the lower section and not open the top deck or at least they shouldn't.Paid attendence 15K max ; the unknown factor is students that get in for free. If you look at basketball ; I think it's only 1500-2000 in spite of having a growing group living on campus. So having to drive downtown? Also, with the initial schedule(s) the opponents won't draw anyone.
I would also expect the UFL to draw around 15K.The plan is to increase the marketing in a major way and previous SA teams have drawn around that many.
